Sagarin FCS top 25. These rankings by the end of the season are just based on comparative scores, so there is no bias in them by the later half of the season.
    Davis # 17.
Davis beat #13 Sac, #19 Weber and #22 Southern Utah, lost to #4 Montana.

Larison believe it or not was not offensive player of the week.

It is not that they don’t meet the requirements. It is that their coursework doesn’t map to UC classes. Athletes have to make specified progress toward a degree, and if they took classes that don’t map to Davis classes they don’t get credit and don’t meet the progress requirement. A lot of schools offer vocational type classes that UC doesn’t.
However lower classmen don’t have as much of a problem with that. We had two sophomore transfers who started games, Shamburger who was a freshman standout at D3 Benedictine and Simonson who was at Nebraska but didn’t play.

They carry the home games now on KQCA. That probably means some additional resources. They no longer simulcast on radio and video.

Of course thats better. But that is also true of every other position teams do situational substitutions with. If you don’t have a player who excels at all aspects of the position, situational substitutions gets the skills needed for certain plays on the field.

Or do what Sac, Idaho State, Montana State do which is have two QBs with different skill sets play, even in the same series.

Next year will be a rebuilding year because they lose 5 linebackers who played including all the starters who are all rare talents. Lose majority of offensive line, Parks, Povey, Ford. Will likely have a new QB. Many of the juniors are really four year players that may get on with their lives.

I know this could just be Hawkins philosophy, but the majority of teams in the league used two QBs.
Hawkins said in one of his monologues that coaches have a responsibility to get their young guys prepared to play, yet Davis was almost unique in the league in never playing a backup QB. I can’t think of any other team where the backup never got on the field. The one QB tradition in college football is an anachronism.

The emphasis on the playoffs is a distraction from the importance of beating rivals. Obviously the first increases the likelihood of the second, but that is a happy coincidence.
Next year the goals should be win a game against EWU and the Montanas, and beat the California rivals, and have a winning season Those goals are tough but if they achieve them it is more important the squeaking into the playoffs and losing the first road game like Idaho did last year. This year they achieved those goals except beating EWU or Montana, Next year is going to be a major rebuild.

Davis has an assistant “offensive” coach who was the OC at Willamette last year. If Hawkins took play calling away from Mike Cody he probably gave it to Trey Shimbakuro. I doubt he took it over himself. My feeling is that Cody was overtasked being the o-line coach and the offensive coordinator. O- line is a lot of people to coach, and we didnt have an additional assistant coach for that.
Buchanan is a standout athlete on his NFL style tests, so i think he’s got a legitimate shot at the pros.

I don’t recall players getting the senior day treatment with remaining eligibility that have returned, but thats not something I’ve looked into, just my impression.
Teddye is the same class as Larison, neither redshirted, their freshman year was the free covid year.
Both can graduate and try their luck elsewhere, college or pro.

We throw short over the middle on a crossing pattern all the time, usually the pass is broken up.

Teddye Buchanan is graduating, so I assume he is gone, So that is the entire starting linebacker group, plus reserves Frazier and Mouisset
  • 2023-24 FCS Playoffs
The Big Sky stuck with four teams in playoffs while the MVFC has six, This despite the Big Sky being unusually deep this year.
  • 2023-24 FCS Playoffs
The primary reason Davis isn’t a playoff team is the offense scored 14 points less per game in 2023 than it did in 2022, with about the same level of talent on offense. Coincidently we changed offensive coordinators and the QB coach. Our run game looked improved this year. We all remember games where Gilliam was held to low yardage, average per carry, and where third and 4 had to be a passing down against good teams. That wasn't the case this year but the passing game regressed tremendously. Until the last winning streak they moved the ball but couldn’t score many points. That is largely on the coaches as is the ineffectiveness in the second half on offense,

The bashing Hastings on interceptions is overdone, He had 7 interceptions in conference play, only the two Montana schools had fewer than 6. He had three in one game, the last of which was after the game was decided.

  • 2023 WEEK 12: CAUSEWAY

If the score was more one sided Davis could conceivably have knocked Sac out, but with just a ten point margin I don’t think they will. So either Davis is the fifth team or left out. If they are left out it might be a result of aomething as small as the “garbage time” TD Sac got.

Was Teddye BUCHANAN honored as a senior pre game? I think i head that on the pregame radio show.
  • 2023 WEEK 12: CAUSEWAY
The statistic that stands out when looking at Sac and Davis in conference games is that Sac gives up an average of 437 yards per game and Davis 319. Davis holds teams to 5 points less than Sac does, .
On offense Davis and Sac gain 418 and 412 yards respectively, but Sac scores 5 points per game more, approximately 30 vs 25.
Sac has been out-gained by conference opponents, Davis out gained conference opponents by 100 yards per game.
Sacs star linebacker didn’t play last week, and Davis didn’t have Chubba or Rex Connors.
