  • Week 3: San Diego (1-1) @ UC Davis (0-2)
Interesting that San Diego’s passing coordinator for the last two seasons is now our tight end coach.
    From his profile:
“ Taylor Chapatte enters his first season in 2022 as the Aggies tight ends coach. Chapatte comes to Davis from the University of San Diego, where he spent four seasons as an assistant coach.
Chapatte was the pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach for two seasons with the Toreros and was the wide receivers coach the previous two seasons. ”

    Throws more interceptions than TDS?
    Let’s see. 3 TDs 1 interception.
Total lack of a run game and he passed for 273 yards. If we had some semblance of a balanced offense he would have looked better with those stats.

Our running backs are too good to not gain 3 yards a carry. What accounts for it?
Davis traditionally can’t run the ball against the better teams.
Reminds me of the Biggs era, when he had to bring in another coach to help Plough because the Davis blocking was so geared to moving laterally like for screens and sweeps that they didn’t develop the skills to block vertically. We always look like we’re a scrappy D2 team playing above our weight class.

Not really. We never had a running game against this level of competition
  • Week 2: UC Davis (0-1) @ South Dakota State (0-1)
I recall that the game notes used to have the travel roster, not the entire roster. Maybe not.
  • Week 2: UC Davis (0-1) @ South Dakota State (0-1)
We had another young DB with a pass breakup and two tackles, True freshman Blake Cotton. I think we have good personnel in the secondary, coaches have to get results with it. The transfer from Boise played some. I hope Budgett is ok.

Expectations are set by history, and I don’t think we have ever beat a ranked FCS team on the road, and in this case it’s a team that blew us out in the game before last. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s not something observers wouldn’t expect. It will be sweet if it happens,
    * Idaho was ranked and on the road in 2020, but I think 19th, so just barely.

An interception in the end zone? Do you mean the pick six? That interception was at the Davis 39.
Or the pass that would have been a UCD touchdown except for an outstanding athletic play by the safety? The second wasn’t throwing into coverage, the safety saw the corner get beat and made a big time play to get there and land in bounds, Hawkins said it could have been thrown a bit earlier. I don’t know what happened on the pick 6.

Maae (who played a little), Ambagtsheer, Suani and Toki. And no one asked their status.
  • Week 2: UC Davis (0-1) @ South Dakota State (0-1)
We had a few surprise starters on defense. Noa Masui, Evan Bearden, Rex Connors. Either the first game or close to it for those guys. Also I wouldn’t have predicted Smalley to start; I think that was his first start. Connors had an impressive number of tackles. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of those guys not starting this game.

You guys think we’ve improved that much or that they’ve declined?
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
I’m sure there are a variety of reasons. I listed them as an indication that we have experienced depth that didn’t play, for one reason or another,
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
In addition to the 22 starters.
So we played 56, and did not play Ambagtsheer, Suani, Toki, Hansen O’keefe, Granfors. among others. Just listed guys who’ve had playing time before, most of whom are on depth chart.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
I missed which wide receivers Hawk was high on.
We played a lot of two tight end and had Tompkins as a wide receiver, so not a lot of opportunity for wide receivers to get into the game. Babb didn’t even get much action.
On defense I think they took a few series to adjust because we were playing lighter quicker people on the line and five DBs.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
2018,2019,2020,2021,2022,2023 Five years. If he sits out this season he’s got one year left.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
When did KDVS stop covering games? Or do they sometimes still do it? I used to listen to them in the early 2000s and they were good. I can’t believe we’ve stuck with Doug Kelly so long, just never hear anything I didn’t know. Then there are the contradictory statements. In pregame this team has the most depth ever. Then near end of game “Cal is wearing them down with more players” , to which Marsh replies, they brought the whole team, and Kelly replies more players the coaches are willing to play. So I guess we have a deep team if you count players the coaches don’t trust to play.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
The eligibility rules seem to always have exceptions, but he’s been on three rosters already, CCSF, Cal, CCSF. The five year clock started ticking for him in 2018, so wherever he goes he likely only has one year. His best shot at playing was to stay here. I think he’ll probably move on from football.
The coaching staff here is not quick to make a big deal over transfers. They make them earn it.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
During the radio broadcast it was clear that they weren’t going to say his name or anything else about him.
  • Week 1: UC Davis (0-0) @ Cal (0-0)
For guys at the game, any observations regarding the defensive line personnel? According to box score we started the game in a 3-3-5, and either didn’t play or played very sparingly the guys listed in the nose guard position on the depth chart. Result was that they held Cal to less rushing yards and yards per carry than the average opponent last year. The box score lists two guys who are new in the starting role on the line Noa Masui and Evan Bearden. Neither did much statistically but that doesn’t always tell the story.
