  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
I believe the last time the band was missing was during World War II when the campus was shut down and taken over by the Army Signal Corps. However, as far as I can tell, there were no football games during the same period either. So the last time they were not at a home game was likely in 1930. A pep band was formed that played in the stands in 1929, then no band in 1930 due to a lack of interest, and then reformed and active from 1931 on except during World War II. There was an Aggie Band prior to 1929, but it's history seems to be sketchy.

Here is an interesting quote from a history of the band:

The frustration with not having a band of their own can be seen in a 1926 editorial in the California Aggie entitled "Why Can't the Cal Aggies Have a Band?" If the Cal Aggies had a band, then they would be viewed as more than just a "cow college," but a respectable, modern school.

I guess we're back to just being a "cow college" now.
  • Week 4: UC Davis @ North Dakota State
Concerning NDSU moving to FBS; I remember reading somewhere on some forum last year, Bison fans responding to this saying that NDSU would love to move up to FBS, but because there is no FBS conference with enough schools close enough to Fargo, no FBS conference would want them. No FBS conference has enough schools that would want to have to make the trip to Fargo. There are also concerns that having games in Fargo does nothing for recruiting for the other schools because it's not a big metropolitan area. I don't remember for sure, but I think they said the Fargo Dome itself was not an issue.

With no band and no steam engine, what happens after a touchdown?
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
Last year there were often problems with the Pluto TV feed and I found the Big Sky TV feed to be more reliable.

Click on the blue "Sport" button, select "Football" and today's games should be there.
  • Chris Peterson: Day in the Life
Don't let the video entice anyone into considering moving up here. Too many people are coming here already.

I'm looking forward to the Aggies coming here in a few years though!
  • Chris Peterson: Day in the Life
In the video it appears that he was coming from the general direction of Bill Gates' mansion.
  • Bring back the Cow Bells for the Playoffs?
Sorry for going a little off track here. Banning the steam engine because of complaints from other schools reminded me of an effort to ban the Aggie Band. Back in the early 70s, the SF State basketball coach tried to get the conference to ban the Aggie band because of the hex that we did during free throws. He claimed that his players believed the hex; causing them to miss baskets.
  • Week 12: CAUSEWAY
I see that the current AQI at San Luis Obispo is 49 and forecast to be good air quality Saturday. Could the game be played early at Cal Poly prior to their 4:00 PM game? Would Sac even care enough about this year's game to be willing to put out the enormous logistics effort required on such short notice to pull that off?
  • Big West Conference Message Board Links
Several of these links need to be updated from their "yuku" addresses to their new "tapatalk" addresses. I found the "Big West Boards" at https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/bigwest/index.php

ESPN also showed the score as 59-14, but then corrected it.
  • Week 8: UC Davis @ Northern Arizona
Your browser has to be configured to support Flash for it to work though.
  • Week 8: UC Davis @ Northern Arizona
I don't think it's available through cable. I get it with my Chrome web browser and Big Sky TV at http://www.bigskyconf.com/sports/2015/11/19/WatchBigSky.aspx
  • Week 3: UC Davis @ Portland State
When I was in the band in the 70's, it was a student run organization funded entirely by ASUCD. When available, we took university buses to games, driven by university staff. If they were not available, we chartered buses from Solano, or occasionally Greyhound. We didn't have to come up with any money ourselves, but rather were given $1 per person per meal (which was enough for a complete meal at McDonald's back then). If the associated students could come up with that money, why can't the major university that Davis has become find the money? I guess the requirement to stay in hotels explains part of it. We always slept on gym floors. Also we had few games outside California.
  • Week 2: University of San Diego @ UC Davis
Here's an old article from the Tacoma newspaper where Chris Petersen explains why UW uses hand claps and how he got started using it at Boise State. Primarily it's because the sound cuts through the noise better in crowded stadiums. He points out other advantages too.

Lost it here too. Says "CONTENT UNAVAILABLE The requested bitrate is not currently available."
  • Week 2: University of San Diego @ UC Davis
If they do get the stream started, will it be from the start of the game?
  • Week 1: UC Davis @ San Diego State
I have been intent on never joining Facebook, but for the Aggies I guess I have to now too.
  • MBB: Aggies (6-7) @ Seattle (7-6)
I'm excited about this game. I bought my ticket today. I live near Seattle, but my job has prevented me from attending the games in Seattle in the past. I just retired, so now I'll be able to start attending the games up here. This will be my first time to see Aggies basketball live since the 70s.

Hopefully Garrison will be back playing like he did early in the season and the Aggies come away with a win! Go Ags!

As a member of the Aggie Band, I attended every game, home and away, except the few that had time conflicts with football games early in the season. It's unfortunate that the conference doesn't allow visitor bands. I learned more about life, teamwork, and having a positive, can do attitude on those frequent band trips; skills that prepared me more for the real world, than did all the classes I took at Davis.
