  • Stanford cuts some sports
Boise State just cut 3 sports: baseball, men’s and woman’s swimming and diving saving 2.3M in doing so. Boise AD says that if they cannot fill 36,000 capacity Albertsons Stadium for football This year its ICA program will have a deficit of 10M+.and will be unsustainable.

That is a big lake as I recall. Got very funky in the dead of summer. Is this job to try and fix that?

Are they finally working on Lake Spafford? A few pics would be nice.

Stanfords cut of 11 sports is sure to prompt cuts by other big ICA programs. I would think that Berkeley's ICA may be next. In short, it is a mess both in terms of a huge deficit and title IX. Just look at two metrics: cal spends 35M on men’s sports with men’s coaches averaging a $533,000 salary versus 14M on woman’s sports with $150,000 average salary for the women’s coaches. I realize alumni support is fairly strong, but not enough to make this program sustainable in the long term.

    72. I never figured out the metrics on dropping woman’s rowing other than it was a bit pricey. But now its one of the few very popular west coast woman’s sports that can be played without getting on an airplane. And I will add: WE WERE VERY GOOD AT IT! It would be now just getting on a bus to sac or to the bay. No brainer. Maybe Blue’s worst mistake coming on board?
  • Ivy League scraps fall sports
A good question: does BigSky football make any money?
  • Stanford cuts some sports
Agreed. Sadly FH has to go. Quick fix- reinstate woman’s rowing. We were great at this sport. We have the boats (I think still) we definitely have the girls to do the rowing. And a place to row. It’s a bit pricey, but with Title IX there is no real alternative. Except if we cut a men’s program. Most likely: men’s water polo. Golf or tennis. Possibly, baseball, but I think its a required sport in the BW. All bad decisions for college sports in the future. AD Blue in a bad spot. And if he’s home in Canada now, he’ll probably be banned from coming back to Davis For next quarter.

So the Ivy League did vote to cancel all fall sports. What is a bit surprising is that it made no commitment to moving any sports to the spring as was anticipated. Also, how this plays out with basketball which is sort of an hybrid fall/winter sport is unclear. I’m not a betting man, but if I was I would bet that the Big Sky and the Big West to follow suit soon. FBS football- anyone’s guess, but I would think the PAC-12 would be the most likely to cancel fall sports out of all the major conferences. SEC probably no way. It would probably play with Covid sick players instead off canceling. I also would not be surprised if Trump threatened to pull federal funding from any FBS school that cancelled.

I totally forgot about tennis! But I would hate tho see this as the only effective way to clean it up.

ICE decision not allow foreign students to stay in the US is bad news for Aggie basketball. WBB has 5 foreign players on its 2020 roster, basically 1/3+ of the team. MBB has several as well, but not the WBB numbers. I do not know how WBB survives this with 8 players.

Ivy League to vote on Wednesday on postponing football season to next spring. Atlantic Magazine says 98% chance that will be the decision. Sadly, Many feel this will be the first of many leagues to do the same. With the recent surge of the virus it is probably the wisest decision.

BGA great post and great song by the Avett brothers. Made me shiver. Thank you so much!

Cmt. “Convince a man against his will and he will be of the same opinion still.” Movie will never be moved or convinced. Just leave it be. So sad, but so true. The above quote thanks to a long forgotten English professor quoting an English poet that I cannot remember..

UnderArmour wants out of record setting 2016 $280 deal with UCLA
Oh how fortunes can change. The reasons are somewhat Covid related due to the shortened seasons this year, but the main reason is that UCLA’s major sports teams just are not performing well enough for UA. UCLA already has an $18.9 million shortfall in its ICA program now covered by a loan from the university. We all know about Cal getting a one time $25 million from the last state budget to cover part of its deficit. How many times will the state have to cover these Favored but losing programs, since we all are paying into the state budget? Not really a fair deal for the other UCs.

    72. I do love your comment: “when the first bat coughed in a cave in Wuhan” classic understatement but unfortunately so true.and so sad..

Very interesting article in the NYT today featuring Davis as a very attractive “college town” i.e. but how will they survive if the kids don’t come back? Also features Ithaca NY, Amherst MA and others. Wish I could cut and paste it but I dont know how.

Just out. Trump people pulled off all the social distancing decals from the seats before the Tulsa rally began. Is SICK too mild a comment for this action?
  • COVID-19
Much more. The sight of all those little kids in there at the rally with no masks, no distance just made me want to cry. So sad.
  • COVID-19
The Sac Bee has an interesting article today addressing concerns educators have about the potential liability school districts face over the COVID situation this fall. They fear a “perfect storm” brewing that will have schools dealing with lawsuits from both sides over mask requirements and other COVID prevention measures, i.e. what if your child who wears a mask is put in a class where the parents of some of the other children do not allow their kids to wear masks or social distance based on so-called “first amendment” rights? Both you and the 1st amendment parents could sue the school in this scenario. So says the article schools want indemnity from the state This coming fall. How does this not apply to sports at any level?
  • Sac’s Thomson to transfer?
I have my strong doubts that if Chris Peterson were still at Washington this would not be happening. Rather ironic that an Aggie might have kept Thompson at sac.
