I don't disagree with any of your points. The passing game has really dialed back in the years after Maier. I don't think it's purely on the QBs though, we haven't had a true #1 receiver since Keelan.

Well I don't think we went after JC QBs during the end of Hawk's tenure because he viewed Miles as THE guy at QB. While I personally have had questions about his ceiling as a QB, I think you really only go out and poach a JC QB if you desperately need to get a guy who can step in and play immediately. Like when we went out and got Maier at the start of Hawk's time with the Ags the QB room was a wasteland.

Otherwise it makes sense to just develop your young guys behind the starter and I think we are going to have a real battle next offseason.
  • Tim Plough Named New UC Davis Head Football Coach
Not that I would expect a head coach to actively state differently, but I love how he said he's here to stay. Here's hoping to for a lot of success with the return to Shredville!

So about a month ago I saw that TE Coach, Taylor Chapatte, posted a tweet that we had landed a TE commitment, but was not able to find any information on the said recruit.

Now, I just recently came across a tweet from an OC high school football reporter stating that we have a commitment from 3 star TE Edward Khutsishvili, our 1 known TE offer (who isn't committed elsewhere). The player hasn't posted anything themselves from what I have seen though.

I don't think they are necessarily in a rush, but it's a good strategy for fan engagement to have periodical releases of info leading up to the season kick off. I don't think they are really meant to be taken too seriously as analysis of the position outlook. More a teaser than anything. At least that's how I look at it.

I don't think the article was really saying that they had expectations that Vargas would know the whole playbook on day 1. What I took from the quote was that they think he's extremely talented and once he's more knowledgeable of the playbook he could be a real impact player for us going forward.

I know there were problems with the OL reporting last season, but hopefully it's been fixed for this upcoming year.

    Board has been updated

    New offers include:
    RB Aden Jackson
    DB Caleb Reese
    DL Luke Westfall
    LB Luke Givens

    GO AGS!

I had noticed that as I was reading through the RB preview. Disappointing when a prospect ends up not working out. That being said, I think that Vargas from the same recruiting class is going to be a monster. His highlights reel is insane.

I agree in the thinking that the number of offers on QBs means PIough likely isn't satisfied with the current situation. If we don't hit on a starting QB in 6 scholarship guys then we need to reassess our scouting in that area. It just seems strange to have 6-7 QBs riding the bench. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the mobile guys go the Trent Tompkins route and become gadget players.

Per instagram, QB Xzavior Guess has also committed to UC Davis. GO AGS!

4 QB commits in 1 class seems unusual especially since we brought in 2 last recruiting cycle. I wonder if Plough has plans to move some of the more athletic guys to other skill positions.
  • Aggie Pride: A UC Davis Football Podcast
Great episode guys! I love the call on needing a bigger body receiver to step up. Hutton and Gbatu are great, but you have to find a guy who can create those size mismatches. My eye is on the QB battle though. I doubt Miles is just going to be handed the job, but it'll be interesting to see how he readjusts to the shredville offense.

Anyone going to make it out to practices to get the first glimpses of the new shredville? I believe first day of practice is Wednesday

that was me who posted about Ott, 69. It wasn't so much a criticism of you or your post. I was just saying that the kid is a monster and has 2 more years of experience since we saw him last. I think we will have a tough time containing him.

Anyway, that's not really what this thread is about. I agree with you that Lan is a special player and I'm happy he didn't jump into the portal.

I doubt Plough will really want to get into the X's and O's as to not give away the playbook or give opponents any real advantage, but I think the big question is what can we expect from "shredville" and will it be significantly different from his time as OC under Hawkins? From what I understand, Hawkins was pretty hands off from the the coordinators. I think a lot of us are pining for a return to a high flying, fast, creative offense that we strayed away from the last several seasons.

As Plough stated at the Big Sky Media Day, Lan had opportunities to go to bigger and more prestigious football programs over the offseason, yet chose to return to the Ags. What were the factors that went into that decision? Simply the Aggie Pride factor? I do believe that UCD instills a certain level of pride that other programs may not have.
  • 2024 Week 1: UC Davis @ UC Berkeley
Idk, man. I feel like this is really underselling Ott. He's pushing to be one of the top RBs taken in the next draft. This is from a scouting report on him...

"Ott has been the engine of California’s offense throughout his first two seasons of college football. Among Power Five running backs since 2022, he’s ninth in rushing yards (2,201), seventh in yards after contact (1,394), fifth in forced missed tackles (108) and sixth in receiving yards (517). Ott gets up to top speed quickly at 6 feet and 200 pounds. His 160 plays where he hit at least 15 miles per hour since 2022 rank third among FBS running backs."

I think what's more likely is Cal limits him if they get up early to avoid risk of injury.

CA Forever
