  • 2024 Week 7: Cal Poly (2-3) @ UC Davis (5-1) Homecoming + Battle for the Golden Horseshoe
To be totally fair on the rushing stats, the only 2 teams that Cal Poly has faced this season that weren't skewed decently to the passing game are Western Oregon (D2) and Northern Colorado (would be competitive in D2). Larison will likely be the best RB they will face so far this season, it's just a matter if our line can get some openings for him.

    Cal Poly game notes

Jones has been moved to the bottom of the QB depth chart (was listed as the starter against ISU, but left the game due to injury) so I'm assuming that we're going to see a combo of Kelly and Watts.

Kind of crazy that it's Thursday and @Aggie Pride Podcast had to start the Golden Horseshoe conversation over the Poly forum. That forum used to be a lot more lively before they split into 2 different forums and 1 died. Still, you would think that there would be some discussion of a rivalry game week.

I have a distinct memory from the Toom where they were throwing wrapped fully loaded burritos into the stands for "burrito madness". Many learned that day that the structural integrity of a burrito does not withstand forceful impacts.

Looks like tube sock madness is making it's return for homecoming. When I was a student people went NUTS for the tube socks.

As fans we have to be thankful the rattlesnake didn't take a chunk out of our ankle, but what the hell was that effort yesterday?AggieFinn

Frankly our DBs were covering like they were against Idaho. I mean, no one within 5-10 yards of the receivers on numerous plays. Just unacceptable even at our level of football. I'm not expecting perfect coverage, but you have to at least put yourself in position to cover.
  • Pac-12 set to add Boise, 3 other MW schools
Well, there's this post from @Kadeezy from the Sac forum...

"For those that are worried, I have a very, very good source that says Sac State will accept a new conference bid in the next three weeks, and it will be the PAC-12. More strategic releases of drawings, partnerships, etc between now and then will make clear that we are the best fit before an official announcement."

If that is the case, sad end of an era. Sac making big things happen while we've seemingly taken our hat out of the ring for the time being. This move would make a move up in the future difficult for market share reasons and gives Sac a recruiting foothold in the region that would be hard to overcome if we ever were to move up.

Also worth noting that ISU absolutely TORCHED the Mustangs through the air. ISU's QB dropped 425 yards and 3 TDs while one of their receivers had 236 receiving yards. Said receiver only had 249 yards going into the game.

If the offensive line holds Ponder in check, it would be nice to see Miles shred up the Poly defense.

Yep, I mentioned in my post that they've found their offense in the last 2 games compared to some pretty concerning performances to start the season. That being said, close only counts in horseshoes (no pun intended) and hand grenades and as others have mentioned in other threads at the end of the season "quality losses" don't mean anything to a playoff selection committee. I imagine this will be a close fought battle due to the rivalry factor, but hopefully a hostile crowd will make things difficult on the Mustangs.
  • 2024 Week 6: UC Davis (4-1) @ Portland State (0-4)
It was really tough to tell one way or the other from the angles that we were given on TV. I don't know if PSU got "robbed", but I can certainly see how the call would be controversial.

Ags had the ball around the 8 yard line with 4 seconds remaining. Miles fired a pass to Hutton that falls incomplete with the score board showing 0:00 on the clock. PSU starts celebrating, but the refs determine there's actually 1 second left so 1 more play. Hastings rolls out to his right and gets the ball to Tompkins right at the goal line, but Trent is facing the field falling forward. It's called a TD on the field. PSU says ball never touched the goal line, it's reviewed and remains a TD. So like I said, were they screwed? I don't know...

The slow starts are definitely a concern of mine. Tough to win when you go down multiple scores in the 1st quarter. Obviously not impossible as we saw today, but 0 chance that works against MSU.

Yeah, maybe I phrased my first sentence poorly. I don't think Miles was really the reason today was such a close game is what I was trying to say.

That being said, their remaining schedule is UC Davis, Idaho, Montana, Northern Arizona, Sac State, and Weber State... tough sledding ahead.

Miles definitely had some sailed passes and the 2 turnovers, but I don't think this was necessarily a bad day from him as a whole. He made some big passes when needed most.

I mean, the offense still put up 550 yards of offense, but for whatever reason (mistakes, poor play calling, divine intervention) we just cannot materialize points. I said earlier in the season that it feels like we're allergic to scoring and that has continued to ring true.
