I think that was Washington State, no?

I wish I knew haha! I'm totally with you on this one. I was expecting a relatively normal NLI day. I wasn't expecting a huge class just based on the information that was out there, but usually there's at least a couple surprise signings. I never would have guessed we've have 1 announced signing and radio silence from athletics.

Yeah BGA and I were talking about that too. Looking at the athletic website you wouldn't even know that today was NLI day. That being said, it could have been intentional because there just wasn't much to report.

And only 1 of the 2 was even announced as a signing. This signing period goes through the 17th, but typically the kids who are going to sign in this period do it day 1. JUCO kids can sign through mid January and then we have the February signing date as well. I have to agree though that this is highly unusual for Hawkins and company. They've prided themselves on recruiting in the past and that has been backed up by success in the December signing period.

Sam Houston State swooped in last minute with an offer to LB Sincere Jackson and he commits and signs

I want to make it clear that I don't have anything personal against Hunter or Miles. I don't know either of them, but based on some of their accolades off the field they sound like tremendous kids.

Speaking from a potential success of the team standpoint though, I'm really not sold on either of them giving us a serious chance of making a legitimate run in the playoffs. Both guys finished the season with more interceptions that touchdowns and neither showed any real signs of consistency through the season. Both had some good moments, but they both also showed that they are far from complete quarterbacks.

You mentioned Miles being young and that is valid. He has time to grow and develop as an athlete, but at the same time I look at guys like Tommy Mellott at MSU who has looked very good since Matt McKay entered the portal and RJ Martinez at NAU who battled injuries over the course of the season, but also looked very good when he was playing (Davis maybe loses that game if he was healthy). They are both freshmen as well. Those are just a couple of examples, but I'm sure there are plenty more examples of freshmen finding success even in tough situations.

I'm not a football coach or anything. Unless BIG strides are made in terms of development the offense is going to struggle. We lost some studs at WR and 1 of the best RBs in program history. That isn't going to make life easy for a shaky QB.

Anyway... I don't want to detract from the subject of the thread too too much.

Agreed. If you weren't a Twitter user and just looked at the athletics page you wouldn't even know it was NLI day. Maybe they did that on purpose though. Tough to put a lot of fanfare into landing 1 or 2 guys.

And I'm not putting down our new Aggies by any means. I'm always stoked to add new guys to the roster. Here's to hoping they become impact players for us!

I gotta agree with river here. I doubt the plan was to have 1 official signee today. You wanna get these guys locked in early. It'll be interesting to see what Hawk has to say about it... If it even gets covered by the news that is.

All possibilities, although some schools figured it out. Like I said, Sac is in the double digits and I saw North Dakota State signed in the 30s already this morning.

Could be. There were just so many changes over the course of this year tough to know how or why things are playing out as they are currently. I will say that one thing that the coaches have going for them is that most of the standings offers we have out didn't commit and sign elsewhere today so there is still time to work on winning those athletes over.

It's just a little bit of a shock because Hawkins up to this point has been pretty successful in the early signing period.

Wyatt Gardner announced on his personal twitter account that he has signed. It was, however, not announced by Davis and that typically means he is signing as a PWO.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
I think they typically announce the signings on Twitter as soon as the paperwork comes through. At this point the coaches have their work cut out for them.

I don't know the scholarship situation or the landscape of what hurdles the coaching staff faced when recruiting, but it is a little bit concerning to be sitting on 1 signee. We really haven't had trouble bringing in recruits in the past so this is surprising to say the least.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
Yep, I noticed that as well. Had the site up expecting to grab information from there... and nothing. Could be a sign that they were expecting an extremely light day.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
Sac is already up to 10 signings this morning, Cal Poly at 4... We're still sitting at 1...

It specifically feels like a slow year for us right now. Maybe the guys we're going after just don't have a lot of social media presence, but it feels fairly strange to only have 2 commits at the opening of the NLI period.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
Early signing period opens today. We do have a couple commits, but we'll see how many signings we get today.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
I hadn't realized how many were already gone. Well, I don't have a super great explanation for why there's so little out there right now.
