  • Week 5: Idaho @ UC Davis
'Jealous' is the wrong word. 'Resentful' is more accurate. Idaho has a North-South rivalry going, just like California, but the state capital and the economic weight of the state is in the south, often leaving North Idaho feeling like an afterthought. Posters on the Vandal site refer to Boise as the COU, Center of the Universe, and we think Boise people believe it really is the COU. Vandals believe our University of Idaho, the land grant and premier research institution of the state, has been de-emphasized in favor of BSU.

I don't think Hawkins hates the University of Idaho. I suspect he's indifferent. When I started at Idaho in '94 we were ascendant and had beaten BSU for years. Those days are long gone, and Hawkins was a huge part of Boise's rise. I think the Vandals were no more than a speed bump to him, so why would he hate Idaho?

regarding your question about why we don't see flagless reviews of other plays. I think targeting is safety-focused, so officials make an exception for tackles that can result in head injuries to both players. I doubt they're going to call it on line play, the rule is written for tackles.

As a Steeler fan I watched Ryan Shazier repeatedly lead with the crown of his helmet when he tackled opponents. I cringed every time, including the last time he did it. I didn't get a good look at the call against us, saw it on my phone and didn't want to have to yell at the screen, so I haven't watched it again. Generally I can't complain about rules to take this out of the game. It's good for the ball-carrier and the tackler.

I would bet Tompkins trusts himself more than he trusts anyone he can pass to.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
I had to drive to Moscow so listened to most of the second half (after our first touchdown) in the car. Was very surprised at the HR benching, and then to hear new names in the backfield. More than anything it left me with the feeling that Hawkins was getting film on players.

So we have short off-season to have a full-blown quarterback controversy. I didn't see Tompkins play today but heard the announcers raving about him. For me the question is 'Can he throw?' Sounds like he can move the ball with his legs, but most playoff teams solve that. I saw plenty of good things from HR but we all saw some mistakes too. Still, he is elusive and can get a first down with his legs too.

One thing we can all agree on: That was a BS targeting call. I saw the play in the cashier's line at the supermarket and thought 'What a great play.' As I walked to my minivan they were replaying it and I wondered why. Then I wondered why EWU had the ball still. BS call.

Barriere is likely the best quarterback we'll see this season, or next season.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
That's what I'm talking about! HR throws a good deep ball. We have to open the game up. The last two games play calling has been frustratingly conservative. We are already getting thumped, there's nothing to lose by opening up our playcalling. This is a great way to start the half, let's not turtle.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
Right now Eastern can do anything they want on offense. They can run it, they can throw it. I hope we make some good adjustments. Their # 24 looks gassed. Just heard one of the announcers talk about the weather making them cramp. That might be our best hope! It's a lot hotter in Davis than it is up here.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
Disagree, too early to pull HR. I put more on the playcalling than I do on him.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
Use the open player in the flat! That would have been a first down.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
We need to do better. Like that! Turnover! Now open up the playbook.
  • Week 5: #9 Eastern Washington @ #11 UC Davis
I was thinking this too. Is it worth the wear and tear on players who are going to be suiting up in the fall to play more games now? I'm less concerned about saving units and more concerned about increased injuries in the fall. This is a team with great potential and I'd like to see them win in the 'real' season.
  • Week 4: Idaho state at UC Davis
I didn't get the approach at all, taking the ball away from Rodriguez and taking the pass offense out of the game. But it worked, so what do I know?
  • Week 4: Idaho state at UC Davis
Okay, I guess I won't complain about clock management or not letting Tompkins throw.
  • Week 4: Idaho state at UC Davis
Great touch on that pass. Now we need better play-calling.
  • Week 4: Idaho state at UC Davis
I guess that's why he wants to return those kickoffs.
  • Week 3: Cal Poly @ #21 UC Davis
I think he's made up for that fumble.
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
ESPN said we were up 14-0, but now says 7-0. Which is it?
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
Ironically enough, I think the same day a group of Idahoans gathered in Boise at the Capitol to protest mask mandates and burned masks. Idaho doesn’t have a mask mandate...But Moscow does.
  • Week 2: #23 UC Davis @ #2 Weber State
I bought tickets in the visitors section of the Kibbie Dome. I think it was mostly Aggie players parents around us. I was very disappointed with their lack of mask compliance. It got better as the game went on, but some people, like the family of four right in front of us, never wore their masks. Strapping it to your chin does not count. Idaho's mask requirement was clear. If you are going to travel to another state to sit with people in an indoor facility and spend much of your time yelling (and spraying), you should follow their policies.
