This is a follow up to my last message which best describes Sacramento's non-existent relationship with its university. Probably would've been better off in the trash talking board, but I really believe this is how Sacramento feels about its disinterest in Sac State. Note the Kings reference in the next to last line.

New Sacramento State Fight Song (To the tune of Chico State's fight song)

    S A C R, A M E N, T O, State! Go Away!
Sacramento State, we don't care much about them!
They do nothing right! Might as well just give up!
    Boo! Boo! Boo!
    We're not interested,
'Cause they don't wear gray and purple!
Nobody cares at all, 'bout Sacramento State!

I saw Goags' comment about the Chico State Satellite's gym and here's how I look at it. Sacramento is a Kings town. It has never bled Hornet green. The community has always treated Sac State like a red-haired stepchild (even before the Kings arrived). Their athletic director is no Kevin Johnson in terms on trying to bring everyone together (the students, alumni, heavy hitters/movers and shakers and just common Sacramento area residents). My advice to Sac State would be to go back to Division II (there are openings in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with UC San Diego departed and the Pacific West Conference with Notre Dame de Namur dropping intercollegiate athletics). I wouldn't mind seeing the Hornets develop a rivalry with their parent school up Highway 99, as well as schools like Humboldt, Sonoma, Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State. With all due respect to UC Davis, I feel the Chico State Satellite's biggest rivalry is with its own city. No wonder Grant Napear wouldn't talk about Hornet sports when he had his radio show. Simply put, no one in Sacramento cares about Sac State and any hope of them ever being a viable Division I athletic program went out the window a long time ago. The only thing Sacramento cares about is pro sports (the Kings and the Republic FC) I have a new fight song for them in my message below.
  • Daytime basketball game?
The midweek afternoon game (OK, technically it's late morning) UC Davis' women's team will be playing this Thursday is promoted as a field trip game. Chico State's satellite campus in Sacramento has been doing this type of game for the past three years. The adult fans are still able to buy tickets to the game, so they won't be shut out. The idea is to invite local school children to attend a game with their teachers and/or parents. The WNBA came up with the idea first. I went to a Monarchs game in 2005 (the year they won the WNBA Championship) that was played at 11 a.m. on a Thursday. So this set up is one I am familiar with and I think it's a great idea to help the women's basketball team connect with their younger fanbase.
  • MBB: Loyola Marymount (5-5) @ UCD (4-8) 7 pm Monday 12/16
I have to admit the attendance is a problem. The Sacramento region has never been great at supporting its college teams. It's always been Kings this, Kings that (for the record, I am a Kings fan, but I wish there was more to the local sports scene than just a team with the NBA's longest playoff drought). :brow: Of course, Sac State belongs in Division II with Chico, Humboldt, Sonoma State, etc. Speaking for UC Davis, I don't have an easy answer. They have the facilities to draw people in, yet there seems to be too many competing interests, whether it's the town's inviting atmosphere (parks and restaurants, to name a few), students being more concerned about their studies, not being a Power 5 program like Cal or Stanford (I'm afraid even those two take a backseat to the Bay Area's pro teams). :rage: It would be great if there was more passion for Aggie sports, but just like everything not gray and purple around these parts, It's difficult to pinpoint what the athletic program has to do to develop an engaged fan base.
  • Causeway Smack
It's too bad Chico State doesn't have a football program anymore. Maybe its satellite campus down Highway 99 should follow suit. While they're at it, Sac State should drop back to Division II and rekindle its rivalry with its party, I mean, parent school. :naughty:
  • Week 12: Montana State @ UC Davis
Yes, Ben Scott threw for four touchdowns that evening along with 379 yards. What I also remember was getting into an argument at the concession stand wanting a bottle of Pepsi (it was the year UC Davis changed its soft drink partnership) and being told all they had were the fountain version. Lesson learned. That and the 40-point loss made that night one to forget.
  • Week 12: Montana State @ UC Davis
I was at the 2014 game when Montana State pounded UC Davis. It wasn't one of the most enjoyable games I've ever attended in any sport. This is a much different team than it was five years ago. Obviously, this season has been a bumpy ride with the three straight losses, but these guys haven't given up. So let's get two more wins (and spoil the Chico State Satellite's playoff hopes in the process) to give everyone hope going into next season.
  • Week 11, UC Davis at PSU
I'm glad that the Aggies got themselves back on track after the tough loss to Weber State and the bye week. I just want to see these guys lay it all on the line these last two games, especially since Montana State and Sac State will have their respective playoff hopes at stake.
  • WEEK 8: AGGIES @ THUNDERBIRDS
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another strong effort by the Aggies. I'll be getting home in time to watch the game on my computer after I attend the Kings' Fan Fest in the afternoon. Every game is important after losing three straight, so if UC Davis executes and doesn't let their guard down, then that should get them another win and some added confidence for the coming weeks. GO AGS!
  • Montana game to be televised
I wouldn't be surprised if the UC Davis-Montana game gets an afternoon start time, most likely at 1 p.m. Root Sports is the TV partner of the Seattle Mariners and their game against the Oakland Athletics on September 28 starts at 6:10 p.m. While it's a guess on my part, I would say the Aggies-Grizzlies game should have a 1 p.m. start, which would allow Root Sports to begin the Mariners pre-game show at 5:30 p.m.
  • Bertsch drafted by the Dallas Wings
I was very happy to see Morgan Bertsch get drafted. I have remained a WNBA fan despite the Monarchs' folding a decade ago (thanks a lot, Joe and Gavin). I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that Morgan will make the Wings' roster and can contribute however she can.
  • LA Coliseum
My personal thought on this is that the name "Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum" should be left alone. There is simply way too much history and tradition with that name. Of course, I use what I call the Cassius Clay analogy when it comes to stadium and arena name changes, calling the venues by their current name since not too many people would call a person by his or her former name it he or she changed it. As I mentioned, I don't think people would've kept calling Muhammad Ali by his former name (Cassius Clay). It doesn't matter if it's a sponsored name. For example, I call Sonoma Raceway by that name, even though the place has been known as Sears Point and Infineon. The LA Coliseum, however, is one name I am adamant about keeping in place. If United Airlines wants to keep its sponsorship in place, I would've suggested "Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at United Airlines Field." Similar to what the University of Washington has with its football stadium, Husky Stadium at Alaska Airlines Field. For the record, I have called the Kings' former home Arco/Sleep Train Arena (despite the fact that Sleep Train has been renamed Mattress Firm) since they moved to the Golden 1 Center and I'll be coming to UC Davis Health Stadium in late September for the Aggies' football game against Montana.
  • WBB Big West Conference Tournament March 12-16
With the success of the football and women's basketball teams, I say IT'S A GOOD DAY TO BE AN AGGIE! I checked in over the weekend on the Aggie women in the Big West Tournament and was pleased that they didn't break against Hawaii. Yes, I know Stanford has always been one of women's college basketball's toughest programs, but getting to the NCAA tournament is what it's all about. I hope Jennifer Gross resists the idea of joining a Pac 12 program. She has a great thing going in Davis and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the good fortunes keep coming the Aggie women's way.
  • WBB 2/9 2 pm: UCD ((16-6 & 8-1) @ Cal Poly (5-14 & 1-8)
Strong effort all around. I watched the stream of today's game and felt the Aggies kept their composure despite Cal Poly's early outburst. I haven't checked on what's been happening with the Mustangs, but I didn't know what to make of their third quarter effort. Clearly, UC Davis did everything right in the third, but I wasn't expecting things to fall apart for Cal Poly the way they did.
  • MBB 11/20: Aggies (1-4) vs Sac State (1-0) at the Golden 1 Center
At least one issue I can find with Sac State's men's basketball team having only one winning season in the past 30 is good luck trying to get anyone good that's willing to play their home games in a 1,000-seat high school caliber facility on a campus in a city that doesn't care about its university. :shade: In my opinion, the Hornets' athletic program has some tough decisions to make. I think getting an on-campus arena is a long shot at best. There just isn't an appetite on Sacramento's part in wanting to get one built. I also wonder if Sac State would be better off going back to Division II and rekindle rivalries with the likes of Chico State, Humboldt State, San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay. When you have a college like Sac State that has done almost nothing to get people to care, there isn't much to get excited about. There's no way of knowing if things will ever change with these guys.
  • Week 11: UC Davis @ Eastern Washington
I wouldn't worry about Pluto TV's coverage not being listed on UC Davis' web site. It's a safe bet that we will still get to watch the game against Eastern Washington through Pluto TV. SWX is available on Channel 6.2 in Spokane (the NBC affiliate's subchannel) and will be carrying the game locally. Viewers who are outside the Spokane area will still get to watch the game on Pluto TV utilizing SWX's feed.
  • Week 9: UC Davis @ Montana
Very impressive effort by UC Davis yesterday. I watched the stream on Pluto TV and received it fine except I had to hit the refresh icon every 15 minutes when the screen went black. The halftime segment on Montana's TV coverage wasn't shown, so I took the radio out and hear Scott and Doug's first half recap. In any event, I believe this year's Aggies had more than met my expectations. I knew they would be in a position to challenge for an FCS postseason berth, but with some strong efforts that included two comeback wins (I was at the Idaho State game), they could pose a threat when the playoffs start. With three winnable games ahead, I feel it's only a question of where the Aggies will be seeded.
  • Despair across the Causeway
I need to chime in. I really want to see UC Davis and Sacramento State do great. I go to games every year in football and men's and women's basketball at both schools. For the record, I'm a Chico State graduate (yeah, I know, "STATE SCHOOL!") who remembers the Aggies and Hornets being rivals with the Wildcats during the Division II era. I currently live in the Sacramento area and without question, it's always doom and gloom when it comes to Sac State. They're simply a product of a dysfunctional and disconnected community. It's the same problem with a certain NBA team also based in Sacramento who hasn't reached the postseason in a long while and there's not much hope they'll be getting back into the playoff picture anytime soon. :vomit: I wish I had a better outlook when it comes to the Hornets, but when you're a commuter school, the prevailing thought is always "WHATEVER!" :shade:
  • Week 3: UC Davis @ Stanford
My biggest concern about using Cal in UC Davis' branding (Cal-Davis, Cal Aggies, etc.) has more to do with comparing UC Davis to UC Berkeley. UC Berkeley has always prided itself in being Cal and I feel that UC Davis using anything Cal related would give them a perception of being a UC Berkeley "wannabe" (I hope I don't offend anyone with that term, I just can't think of anything else) or that they're riding on UC Berkeley's coattails. I understand Davis was originally the home of UC Berkeley's farm, but I really feel that UC Davis needs an identity of its own rather than being viewed as a satellite of the high profile Cal down Interstate 80.
  • All Sac State home games on CW31.
The agreement Sac State has with Channel 31 likely will only cover football games. It will be a problem televising basketball games in a 1,000-seat gym, so the Hornets will only have the football games on local TV. I think it's too late for UC Davis to come up with their own local TV arrangement this season, but I'm sure Kevin Blue will monitor what's happening in Sacramento and see if a TV agreement for Aggies football games can be worked out at some point.
