  • WBB 2018-19 Out of Conference Games
Looks like a good start to the OCC. I kind of like the little rivalry we have going on with WSU, and the more times we get to test ourselves against Stanford, the better.

I don't think we've hosted the Dons. Here's the series history:

    UC Davis 26, San Francisco 72 (1934-35)
    UC Davis 45, San Francisco 30 (1939-40)
    UC Davis 35, San Francisco 50 (1941-42)
    UC Davis 27, San Francisco 39 (1941-42)
    UC Davis 71, San Francisco 94 (Jan. 1, 1974)
    UC Davis 70, San Francisco 90 (Nov. 29, 1975)
    UC Davis 71, San Francisco 120 (Nov. 29, 1976)
    UC Davis 61, San Francisco 74 (Dec. 15, 2017)

I'm sure they'll be a little extra motivation (as if you need one for the season opener) for this game as the team played very poorly at USF last year.
  • Announcemnet today!
Yep, expanding the relationship between UCD and Sports 1140. 1140 will now carry ALL MBB games (I assume unless it conflicts with Kings games), plus 14 one hour coaches shows (11 football and 3 MBB). Les and Blue are currently on 1140 talking about it.
  • 2018-19 MBB Big West Conference Predictions
UCSB has a ton of talent. How they mesh will be the interesting variable. A lot of new guys from different systems.

I worry about the size and quickness of the backcourt of CSUF. I think both Ahmad and Allman are 6'3" or taller, and quick, and I'm not sure we had enough on-ball defenders last year to stay with them. How Gonzalez, Jackson and Nelson (plus Shorts/Schneider/Mooney of course) play defensively against them will be important.

That's a pretty solid review. It certainly is nice to see the Ags regularly picked near the top. Looking forward to a year of John at full speed, and how the new guys fit in.

  • Humboldt cancels football after 2018
His dad is the coach at Yuba college, so it wouldn't surprise me if Jack went that way.
  • Caleb Fuller
Agreed...with his extensive international experience, he's the one true freshman that I bet will see playing time this year.

  • Interesting Article About Scheduling That Could Help Mid-Majors Boost their RPI's
That's an interesting article. Not sure an extra game or two against UCI or CSUF instead of Poly and UCR would make too big of a difference in the NCAAT seeding, but I do like that some mid-major conferences are trying to do something creative.
  • New Backboard Needed
Yeah, with Gonzalez, Underwood, Neufeld, along with the freshman you mentioned, RS freshman Nelson, and Jackson (who didn't play a whole lot), that's a lot of unknown talent, and a ton of potential. Could be a very exciting year!
  • New Backboard Needed
When Chima came to UCD, I thought it was odd that Les red-shirted him for a year. Usually coaches go to the juco ranks to fill immediate needs, with the assumption that juco players are more advanced than incoming freshman. Of course, now we know that Chima had a ton of natural talent, but needed that RS year to really learn the nuances of the D1 game...and that certainly worked! I'm wondering if Underwood was in the same boat.

Regardless, I'm hoping we see a lot from him, Jackson, and Nelson.
  • Road games at Arkansas and Indiana
That’s great news. We’ll be integrating a few new pieces and a tough OCC will really get us prepared for the BW

  • 2018-19 OOC
Well that's a good start to a tough OOC. We can add the Golden 1 game against Sac, probably around Thanksgiving.

  • BJ Shaw
Don’t know for sure, but I just saw a pic of him on Twitter working out at pre-draft camp.
  • BJ Shaw
    From New England Recruiting

Shaw, the son of longtime NBA player and coach Brian Shaw, was widely under-recruited prior to arriving in Wolfeboro this fall. In fact, he didn't hold a D1 offer at all. That all changed quickly this fall when college coaches started attending open gyms at Brewster.

A versatile perimeter player with good size, athleticism, skill, and the ability to play multiple positions, Shaw earned offers from high academic schools in Patriot League, CAA, and Horizon League.

He carved out a role in the Bobcats rotation this winter and solidified his spot, not just as a division I caliber talent, but one who was just starting to tap into his potential. UC Davis allowed him the opportunity to pursue his dream of playing division I basketball but to do so in his home state of California.

I hope you're right...and I trust the history of this staff finding guys like Chima and Shorts. I think Mooney was lightly recruited, too, if my memory serves me, and he's turned into a reliable piece of the puzzle.

17 sounds right. I'd imagine all the freshman (4) redshirt, bringing the active roster to 13. After having to use a backup shooting guard to play significant minutes at power forward last year, it'll be really nice to have a deep and reliable bench.
  • Cameron Ba
Yeah, that's a good point. Must be a good reason why they announced his addition.

    Gone...Chima/Michael/Arell/Strom In...Squire/Fuller/Shaw/Ba
  • Cameron Ba
I couldn’t find anything either. Strikes me as a walk-on guy. Staff must see something they think they can develop.
