  • UC Davis Athletics Joining Mountain West - Football to Follow
Assumption in some article I read was that men’s soccer, beach volleyball and both water polo teams will stay in the Big West. Men’s soccer already has one associate member in Slack. Men’s water polo needs Ags (or a new team) to stay at six.

Having nothing to do with the Mountain West move field hockey is now without a league. Hard to see how they can survive, which creates Title IX problems.
  • Causeway Cup 2024-25
I have updated the schedule above for the 2024-25 academic year. Some of these may be posted by one school or the other but not both.

Softball and beach volleyball schedules have not been posted.

    Go Ags!
  • Playoff Talk 2024
    Being snobbish is a tradition.

There is a D-III or NAIA conference, the New England Small College Athletic conference that also chooses not to participate in post-season football.
  • Playoff Talk 2024
Ivy League teams do not participate in post-season play in football.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the Middle Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), both composed of HBCU schools, have their own post season. Traditionally HBCU schools have played late into the season and not participated in the NCAA post season because of calendar issues. Now the SWAC holds a conference championship which will be played next weekend between Jackson State and Southern University. The winner of that game will play against the regular season winner of the MEAC in the Celebration Bowl to be played in Atlanta on December 14th. South Carolina State will represent the MEAC in that game this year.

(There are a couple of other late season traditions in SWAC schools. Alabama State and Tuskegee play on Thanksgiving in the Turkey Day Classic while Southern and Grambling meet in the Superdome on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the Bayou Classic. Many people go for the game, everybody goes for the bands.)
  • Best of Thanksgiving
All good, and plenty to be thankful for.
  • Cal Poly takes over CSU Cal Maritime
"Coming from the Bay, when you take I-80, you can see the training ship just to the left of the bridge."

...on the north bank of the Carquinez Straits where the Sacramento River empties into San Pablo Bay.
  • Cal Poly takes over CSU Cal Maritime
"They've also had a lot of bad press in the last few years with sexual assault and hazing problems." I had forgotten about the allegations. The maritime industry has never been known for gender equity. Cal Maritime used to call their women's teams the "Sea Hags."

One of my children's good friends went to Cal Poly and was able to take semesters at sea on the Cal Maritime training ship.
  • Cal Poly takes over CSU Cal Maritime
It's surprising to me that Cal Maritime has financial difficulties. It is the only maritime academy on the west coast. As I recall it has a very high job placement rate.
  • Cal Poly takes over CSU Cal Maritime
Rugby is difficult to classify. A handful of schools put their rugby team in their interscholastic sports program, but most schools place rugby in the club sports box. Cal Maritime and Cal are two schools that do put rugby in the athletic department. I can't think of others that do. It may do a lot for finances, admissions, bragging, but in the end they play club teams. The NCAA does not sanction rugby.

Cal Poly SLO has a club rugby team. They are usually pretty good.
  • Causeway Cup 2024-25
After the 42-39 UCD football victory (!!) the running Causeway score is UCD 40, CSUS 5.

Edit: WIth the announcement of the winter and spring schedules the "running" Causeway Score should be UCD 37.5, CSUS 2.5.

The final Causeway event of the 2024 calendar year is men's basketball on December 14th in Sacramento. The game will be at Sac's state-of-the-art school gym.
  • Causeway Cup 2024-25
With tonight’s resounding 76-45 victory over Sac State in women’s basketball the current Causeway score is UCD 35, CSUS 5.

Edit: WIth the announcement of the winter and spring schedules the "running" Causeway Score should be UCD 32.5, CSUS 2.5.

The next competition between the schools is the football game this coming Saturday in Sacramento.
  • Week 13: 70th Annual Causeway Classic
Agreed...but Slack has a bit of a history of this. As I recall, (always a big "if" at my age) when they moved to scholarships and to then D-1AA they were cocky about it. Again relying on what passes for my memory I recall Coach Mattos saying there may come a time when Sac could no longer play a program like Davis.

Don't let your mouth write a check your butt can't cash.

(Do I have to explain "writing checks" to the younger members here?)
  • Week 13: 70th Annual Causeway Classic
The Sac State fan board is imploding. A lot of frustration, finger pointing, hostility directed at the team, the QB who left, the coaches and each other.

As many here have noted, they have only one thing left to play for this season.

Beat Sac! "People should know when they are conquered!"
  • 2024 Big Sky Scores
As you noted, Slack has only one thing to play for now, and it's not an invitation from the Pac-X conference.
  • 2024 Big Sky Scores
FInal, Cal Poly 26, Sac 23. An Aggie win next week and the Hornets finish last in the Big Sky. (Technically tied with Idaho State, but the Bengals won their head-to-head meeting.)

EDIT: My bad. Slack is tied with Northern Colorado, not Idaho State. The Hornets and Bears did not meet this season. Northern Colorado travels to 2-5 Portland State next week. In another match up of 2-5 teams Weber State hosts Cal Poly. Could be a real log jam at the bottom of the standings.
  • Causeway Cup 2024-25
Results from the NCAA D-1 Cross-Country West Regional, held in Colfax, WA, hosted by Washington State:

    Women: UCD 11th place, 365 points - CSUS 28th place, 777 points
    Men: UCD: 12th place, 357 points - CSUS 27th place, 780 points.

With the usual reservations about fall golf competition, the current Causeway Cup score is UCD 30, CSUS 5.

Edit: WIth the announcement of the winter and spring schedules the "running" Causeway Score should be UCD 27.5, CSUS 2.5.

Next up is women's basketball this coming Wednesday, Nov. 20th, in Davis.
  • 2024 Big Sky Scores
    - It had a little montage of four photos from the Portland State at Slack game and the caption, "How's that Pac-12 application going?"

Apparently from a tweet (an X?) posted by a PSU fan.
  • Pac-12 set to add Boise, 3 other MW schools
When people ask me why Davis left D-2 I always answer that D2 left UCD. The list of D-2 schools west of the Rockies that dropped football, or moved to then D-1AA, or to D-3, or moved and then dropped football altogether is long.....St. Mary's, Santa Clara, Chico State, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, Humboldt State, CSU-Hayward/East Bay, Cal Lutheran, Azusa-Pacific, CSU-Northridge, Western Washington, Portland State, Sac State....and throw in D-1 schools that dropped football, Pacific, Long Beach....

There are no longer any D-2 football programs in California. I believe the only two on the Pacific Coast are Central Washington and Western Oregon and they play in the Texas centered Lone Star Conference.

(And the College of Idaho Yotes are NAIA.)
