  • Oregon State Road Trip
Had a connection with a Pac-12 team about twenty years ago. (Maybe the Pac-10 then??) In any event we went to the OSU game and the team we were following stayed in Eugene.

"I really wish we could split D1 football off from the rest of the athletics departments and put everyone back in their old conferences."

You are not alone in that wish:

  • Wild World of Realigment
That was my interpretation as well, but hard to imagine any of those schools pulling an Idaho.
  • Wild World of Realigment
Would Nevada, SJSU and Hawai'i drop to FCS, or do they expect UCD, CP-SLO and a-team-to-be-named later to move to FBS?

Still better than talking about the climate, pickleball, politics, Bud Light, civil rights, the Royal Family, pandemics, or Taylor Swift tickets.

"May you live in interesting times."
  • It's now the Pac-4 where will Cal and Stanford go?
Heard one where the new Pac-? conference would consist of Cal, Stanford, San Jose State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Nevada, UC Davis, Sacramento State, St. Mary's (after reinstating football), and Santa Clara, (also after reinstating football.) In football the conference champion would play the 15th place team from the Big TwENty in the Nacho Cheese Bowl at some HS field in Texas.

The predictions for Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State are bleak. What would a Pac-X conference do for a TV contract without USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington? What happens to those schools if they end up in the Mountain West with a smaller TV contract? What happens to the other/Olympic/non-reveunue sports at Cal and Stanford with smaller TV revenues, and larger travel budgets.

There have beenn grumblings about Hawai'i leaving the Big West. How does this affect them?

How about the teams currently in the Big Ten west who have enough trouble competing againts Michigan, An Ohio State and Penn State. Now they get hit from the other side with USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington?
  • 2023 Season Preview
Ulonzo is not on the Dolphins current roster.
  • 2023 Recruits?
    There is an episode of the TV comedy Cheers where Sam Malone tries his hand as a sportscaster. During an editorial he tries a little rap;

"Get your scores from a guy like me
Who knows what it's like to have a groin injury
    G-g-groin, G-g-groin, G-g-groin injury."
  • 2023 Recruits?

"Didn't Mike Moroski play football and baseball?"

    Yes.

Apparently liked to throw the ball. QB in football and pitcher in baseball.

Wayback when....you could find people who played football, basketball and baseball. Longer schedules, more post season games, year-round teams, have made that unlikely anymore.

Easier because he was kicker, and UCD was D-II, but Benirschke played football AND soccer, sometimes on the same day.
  • Sochor's Coaching Tree
If we dip into high school ranks you can add Tony Franks at St. Mary's in Stockton and Dan Carmazzi at Jesuit and at Christian Brothers in Sacramento. Not sure what Franks is doing now. Carmazzi has retired. Both built HS powers in the Sac-Joaqin section.

Also in high school (though after Sochor's teams...) J.T. O'Sullivan was the head coach at Patrick Henry High School in the San Diego area for three seasons from 2019-2021.
  • Dobbins Stadium thoughts
Whatever the crime rate is in San Diego proper, the UC San Diego campus is in La Jolla. Maybe we could put the UC Davis campus in Carmel.
  • Lacrosse
Northwestern and Boston College will play for the women's D1 lacrosse title on Sunday morning (May 28) at 9:00 on ESPN.

And Notre Dame plays Duke for the men’s title on Monday at 10:00, also on ESPN.
  • Lacrosse
Should you ever go to a field hockey game, explain it to me.
  • Lacrosse
I have not watched a game at Davis and in fact have never watched a live college level game for men or women. The action is much more like every field sport except American gridiron football in that, in theory anyway, play is continuous. Think soccer and rugby, or ice hockey on turf.

This is a good time to catch some lacrosse on TV as the NCAA tournament is in progress. There is a final four set-up on Saturday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Not sure about the women's schedule or whether any of it is televised.

Women's game is supposed to be a little "safer" than the men's because there is not supposed to be any "checking." I believe women are required to wear protective eye-wear.

Next year UCD and San Diego State join the Pac 12 (?) as affiliate members for women's lacrosse. They had been playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, but the MPSF dropped lacrosse when the Pac 12 began to sponsor it. I believe Fresno State dropped it.

According to some lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in American high schools. There are local HS leagues in Northern California.
  • Gabe Vincent
TV folks have to be cringing as the chances of a Celtics vs Lakers finals are rapidly going down the drain.
  • Dobbins Stadium thoughts
That UCLA loss is a stunner. They were the No. 2 seeded team in the NCAA tournament and hosted the regional. They lost to Grand Canyon and Liberty. Davis played in the Softball NIT, an 8 team invitational in Ft. Collins, CO. Not a great showing for the Big West as the two conference teams in the Invitational, Davis and Northridge, each went O-2, as did Fullerton and Long Beach State in the NCAAs.
  • WBB: Aggies Playing Pro Abroad
Megan, er, Morgan*, signed to Sky opening day roster!

    https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2023/5/18/womens-basketball-morgan-bertsch-named-to-chicago-sky-roster.aspx

    *EDIT:
My apologies to Morgan and my thanks to AggieFinn2. If that was the only mistake I made in a day, it would be a great day.

Go Morgan! Go Sky! Beat the Lynx!
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
Baseball score from Sac: CSUS 7, UCD 5.

This is the final competition between the schools this year.

Ags won the overall Causeway Cup this year with 55.85 points to the Hornets’ 34.18.
