  • “New” FCS football conference
They had some sort of arrangement recently where one school from one of the conferences got an auto-bid, even though individually neither conference had the NCAA required minimum number of teams. This will give them a designated conference with the required number.

One thing I like about the WAC, and I guess the new hybrid, is it gives Big Sky teams some non-conference FCS, (did I get that right this time?) opponents.

The way the Pac-12 is looking right now, we may be talking about Cal moving to the Big West.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
UCD and CSUS have completed day three of the El Macero Classic and though there are still a few teams on the course, it appears UCD men's golf will finish 12th of 20 teams with a score of 872, while CSUS will finish 17th with 886 strokes.

That puts the Causeway Cup running score, ...at least if you count golf..., at UCD 50.85, CSUS 17.51.

Next scheduled event is men's tennis this coming Wednesday at Sacramento. The women's tennis teams will meet on Friday, also at Sacramento.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
UCD defeated CSUS in beach volleyball, 4-1, at a tournament at UOP. Depending on how anyone scores this thing, the running score is now UCD 45.85, CSUS 17.51.

The UCD Causeway Cup website has the running score at UCD 35.02, CSUS 14.17. The website has a total of 70 points at stake so UCD has won the Cup by that measure. Updating for baseball and beach volleyball that score should now be UCD 38.36, CSUS 14.17.

If you go out on a limb and include men's cross-country, men's tennis and both men's and women's golf, there are 90 points available and with 45.85 UCD has also won the Cup by that measure.

The men have finished day two of the three day El Macero Golf Classic. CSUS had been six strokes ahead of UCD after day one, but after two days UCD sits two strokes better than CSUS.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
With the baseball win (!!) I have the running score as UCD 44.18, CSUS 17.51.

Two events this weekend with men's golf competing at the El Macero Classic, Friday-Sunday, and beach volleyball at a tournament at UOP on Saturday.

The UCD Causeway Cup website does not list men's golf. (In fact it does not list golf at all, men's or women's.)

Men's tennis teams are schduled to meet on April 19th at Sac, but that is not listed on the UCD Causeway Cup website...
  • Minor sports are still important
Seems strange that UCD and Fresno State did not compete against each other in equestrian this season.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
This is all a "fling the pasta against the wall and see what sticks" sort of scoring. The page on the UCD Athletic website still does not include men's cross country or women's golf. The gymnastics teams competed four times, but the page only includes three (though since the Ags swept the season, that really doesn't matter.)

There are random 1/100ths of points floating around when teams compete three times and the winner gets 1.67 points, creating a possibility of a team winning all three meetings and being awarded an extra .01 point.

In any event, IF women's golf is included, the news today out of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic (in Arizona) is not good for Davis. Final results are CSUS, 1st of 20 teams, 885 strokes - UCD 12th of 20, 921.

My 'your guess is as good as mine' tally is UCD 42.51, CSUS 17.51. That includes 5 ppoints for the cross country win, 1.67 for a women's golf win and 3.34 to Sac for two women's golf wins.

Next scheduled event is baseball, April 11th, in Davis.

I "googled" the assoc. professor. He is apparently a very prominent plastic surgeon.

(That may mean more in Southern California.)

AND UCLA was still paying Jim Mora in 2021, who was released after the 2017 season.

I can't confirm this, but I heard that at one time USC was paying three head coaches...Kiffin, Sarkisian and Helton. ANd Ogeron had been an interim head coach in there at least once.

The most recent figures compiled by transparentcalifornia.com are for 2021. That site lists the top 5 employees and their compensation (total pay & benefits) for the University of California system as:
Charles Kelley (Head footbball coach, UCLA) $5,775,150
Justin Wilcox (Head football coach, Cal) $3,989,491
Michael Cronini (Head basketball coach, UCLA) $3,804,308
Jason Roostaeian (Assoc. Clinical Professor, UCLA School of Medicine) $3,426,298
James Mora (Former head football coach, UCLA) $3,104,975

UCD swept Sac in beach volleyball today, 5-0, at the Big West Challenge in San Luis Obispo.

Now, I will confess that in my advancing years I screwed up the math in my unofficial running tally for the moribund Causeway Cup. I won't go into the details, but as recalculated I have the score as UCD 42.51, CSUS 15.84.

I believe the next meeting between the schools is in women's golf as both teams are entered in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 3-4. That of course is held in Maricopa, Wyoming, er, Arizona.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
    Gymnastic from Berkeley: UCD 3rd of 4, 196.425 - CSUS 4th of 4, 194.875

Running (very unofficial) cup score: UCD 40.16, CSUS 15.16.

Next event is the Big West Challenge in beach volleyball, to be held the weekend of March 25-26 in San Luis Obispo. The Aggies and Hornets are scheduled to meet on Saturday afternoon.
  • March Madness
Vandy lost to Texas A&M in the semis.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
Baseball score from Sac: CSUS 9, UCD 6
Estimated Running Causeway Cup Score: UCD 38.91, CSUS 15.16

Next meeting is a quadruple gymnastics meet along with Cal and Arizona to be held at Berkeley on March 12th.

or why Arkansas-Little Rock is in the PAC 12.

Next thing you know UCLA and USC will be in the Big 10.

It would make sense for CBU to be in the PAC 12. Cal Poly and CSUBakersfield are. CBU beat Bakersfield in a dual meet this season.

Regarding the scheduling: I wonder if the teams scheduled this game some time last week just in case weekend games got rained out. Once it became apparent the weekend games would be played, they could cancel the Monday game.

Have a family relative involved in high school baseball in the Sacramento area. He says they are scrambling to play games. Even if the skies cooperate the ground is still too wet.

Lancers had only one first round win (who lost in the second round) and finished in last place (13th) in the Big 12 Conference wrestling tournament this past weekend.

They went 3-12 overall and 1-6 in conference in dual meets this season.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
As noted on a baseball thread, the baseball schedule has changed yet again. Monday's game at Sacramento has been canceled. The Tuesday game in Davis is still on as scheduled and the April 11th game has been moved back to Sacramento..

Another quirk: Sac has women's rowing as a varstiy team. Davis has rowing at the club sport level. The CSUS schedule lists a May 6 competition against UC Davis. The UC Davis Rowing Club confirms that.

    Today's softball score: UCD 7, CSUS 4.

How long has it been since we've swept softball?

Causeway score: UCD 38.91, CSUS 13.83.
