Watched Rodrigues in JUCO last year. Extremely mobile and strong arm. On the smallish side, but makes things happen with legs and arm. I think he might have a shot at beating Spencer. Johnson is a traditional pocket passer, but just wins games. Should be a good battle for that job.

Any words on who has the early edge for QB2. I know both Johnson and Rodrigues well.

Our QB has to be good from 50 yards! I was talking about an RB playing wildcat QB. By the way, Rogers was insanely accurate in college. I was a huge fan of his at Cal (I grew up watching the Bears stink up Memorial during the 70's. I think he had 21 completions in a row against SC, and the incompletion that broke the streak was a dropped TD pass. Spencer may not be accurate...it's just the way it is for some guys. So many pitchers washout because they don't have control...same goes for QBs. I hope we air it out! We have proven over the past 7 years that we are not Stanford mauling the ball down the field. Chuck it Hawk!

Honestly, I hate the Wildcat if you plan on running it as anything more than a gimmick package. It was amazing when Tebow, who could throw at an above average level and run like a mack truck, put pressue on coaches to defend an exposive passing game and power run game. Coaches know how to attack it on defense (man on the outside with 7 man box), and its rarely run anymore other than as a special package. CJ isn't bad at playing QB, he's just not as a good a passer his competition right now. I really like him as a QB, and loved what he did at Suck St. CJ is fast, but not that fast. While our competition doesn't usually have big LBs, they are almost always faster than most QBs (exception, Vernon Adams type talent). You have to be able to throw a 10 yard out from the pocket, on the roll, and hit the open guy downfield...period. If CJ is that guy, then awesome, his mobility makes him special. I want a guy who can extend a play a few seconds, and then throw a strike. If you are going to run the Wildcat, I like it to be a read option with at RB at QB who might be able to throw a 20 yard pass, but sure as hell can break a run for yardage.

Sadly, I don't think CJ is the guy they thought he might be. Mobility is great, but it has to be combined with the ability to throw from the pocket. Aaron Rogers is so good because he can buy just enough time, but he can make every throw once he buys it. I think they thought CJ was that kind of guy, but he has struggled making the throws he just has to make. A wildcard is Hunter Rodriguez from American River. I saw him play in high school and the JC state championship last fall. He's very mobile, can throw it all over the place, and the only reason he is available to us is that he's undersized (weight not height). He could very well challenge for time this year...he's very good.

This is a great kid who did nothing in high school but win...almost every game. I'm totally biased as he is a family friend, but I'm cheering for 12. Glad to hear we finished injury free...that's the most important result. Can't tell anything from Spring Games, so not worried or overexcited (other than football is being played). The next goal is to have great summer workouts and stay healthy. How many people were out there?

You never know with SJSU, but I don't think they will take us lightly. Lacy wasn't the guy, and Gould stayed with him way too long. Hawk knows what he's doing...if he can't find success, then I have no idea what will work.

I'm sure Tedford would risk his "legacy job" hiring a D-Coordinator based on his relationship and not his ability to design and call defenses. Gould struggled with game management, but a huge part of their lack of success was an offensive scheme that didn't fit our personnel or conference. Our biggest problem was not having a great QB for a long time. Every successful team in the conference has a gunslinger in the backfield that can make things happen on 3rd down. We don't have the NDSU horses, or legacy to get them, so we are going to have to follow the Eastern Washington model of scoring in bunches to win.

We haven't had notable success in our program in a very long time (2010 was our last 6 win season, and we haven't won 7 in FBS yet). Suck State destroyed our defense for 52 in this year's causeway...just embarrassing. The early hype and energy was super last year, but the end result was nothing remotely special. Our wins were against awful teams and a non-scholarship FBS. Being a dominant DII team was fun, but it was not like our coaches were getting big jobs right out of Davis. Those guys busted it as assistants for a long time to get where they are today. It's interesting that our two former coordinators (Daft and Watts) had great success in their next jobs helping both their teams to huge turnarounds. With Watts promotion, now both are coordinators one year out of their Davis days (one at an FBS). Makes me wonder if the problem was Gould, our program, or a combination of the two. If Hawk can't find some success in the next couple of years, I think we are in real trouble.

We will lose coaches to FBS schools based on pay and prestige. I'm not saying Davis isn't a great place to coach, play, or attend school. I loved my time there as a student-athlete, and go back for 3 or 4 games in football, basketball, and baseball (I live local). However, I don't see many up and coming coaches thinking they are content to stay at a school where they can't afford to live in town, don't play on TV, have stringent academic requirements, and can't fill a 12K seat stadium. Like it or not, it's just the way it is.

He's from my town, and he's a well-known heated competitor. He got thrown to the wolves at UCD, didn't really know the offense yet, and did some good things. Our offense sucked, and continued to suck for years, and he just didn't manage his frustration well. I'd rather have a guy who lights up players from time to time than a dead stick. This guy named Brady is known to get into it on the sidelines with guys, and he's pretty good. I was disappointed that he left, and personally felt like he let UCD down, but in the end it's the player's lives and I respect their decisions. His arm is still pretty legit.

We are paying our head coach less than the last DC at Fresno (Hawk's contract is $287K). Our DC makes less than position coaches at most decent FBS schools. $300K a year can get you a lot of house in a lot of good college towns, and a $700K home is very affordable on a $300K annual salary. How many of our great coaches and former players have stayed at UCD to coach? Peterson? Foster? Hawkins? Hackett? Hawk is back as this is probably his last stop after a disaster at Colorado. Like it or not, we are a stepping stone job unless we go FBS, and to me its okay. We have to go find fresh coaching talent, ride them as long as we can, and then reload when they leave.

Depends on the market...I can't imagine the Bay Area can keep it up.

Goes a long way anywhere, but for sure in Fresno. My son played there this fall, and other than it being in the middle of nowhere, it reminds me a lot of Davis. Flat and hot.

Toler is a loss, but we will continue to have ladder climbers go through out system at this level. We just have to recruit good coaches and reload. Why would someone stay at UCD when they see big bucks at the higher level? It won't be the academics...lol.

Hope he continues the legacy of former Aggie coaches bringing notoriety to our program.
