Cleeland made several good throws down the field against Portland State and more than one against USD. And that was another very good long ball under pressure at USD that was dropped by the tight end. Yes Cleeland had a bad second quarter at SMU. Kollock will get some time against Stetson, but saying the one very good long throw at SMU somehow should elevate him over Cleeland at this point is pretty reactionary (not saying you were the one to say this). I trust Plough to make decisions as to QB.

Be careful about sticking to an opinion that isn’t based on all the information. This creates bias.

We have 3 games of Cleeland. We have a pretty good idea of his talent. He is the same QB I saw in spring practice. He hits some and misses others. No real consistency in his throws. He doesn’t have the wheels to be an explosive runner nor the touch to hit guys in stride. He is what you would expect from an FCS QB.

Jackson is a legit 6’4 4* QB from SoCal with an extensive high school record. He only came to Davis because CP left otherwise he would be at a bigger FBS program. If we landed Jackson out of high school he would’ve been the highest ever recruit to sign with Davis. Don’t discount that.

We have only seen a small sample size of Jackson and in that limited time the offense looked much better. The team looked focused. The offense looked like it clicked. And before you say it was against backups, remember these backups are on one of the best teams in college football. Every player on SMU would start for Portland St and San Diego.

Give Jackson a shot. He might be the next great Davis QB. Let their play dictate who the starter is.

I'll still stand by whatever decision Plough makes going into this game, but if there is a singular opportunity to give Kollock some game experience with the 1st stringers it's this game as I think we could probably put Kori the tee dog out at QB and still beat Stetson. We hit conference games after and it's not a good sign for the team if you're still experimenting with who your starting QB is that late into the season.

Never said he was perfect or didn't miss, but I stated the obvious in that the defensive unit he faced compared to his back-ups was significantly different. Open receivers all over the field? I saw us struggling to separate most of the time with Plough dialing up a couple concepts that got guys open. I never played QB, not sure if you did either, but when the game gets sped up like it was Saturday, and things aren't where they're supposed to be, you see why so few guys on the planet get paid to do it for a living, and we're talking about 19 year old kids in their third collegiate start. Receivers have to be open, and the ball has to come out quick. I'm sure that if there were "open receivers all over the field" and he was missing consistently, the coach probably would have made the change, I trust that as fact. Again, no time, no running game.

I have no issue with Kollock or anyone else, and I am not a Cleeland relative or homer. I've just watched enough football in my life to know not to put the blame on that position when an entire roster was overwhelmed. Hell, CP looked overwhelmed against the Huskies if you watched that and no one is saying a word about his back-up. Plough left Cleeland out there that long for a reason, and it wasn't because he couldn't make a throw. It was an investment in the future. There was only one player out there that looked like he belonged on that field with SMU and he played on the other side of the ball.

I strongly disagree with your opinion. The Cleeland/Kollack debate reminds me of the old, "Tastes great!" "Less filling!" Miller Lite (?) ad campaign.

Is Cleeland - Miles Hastings / Hunter Rodriguez 2.0? It sounds like he has a stronger arm.

Cleeland is bigger, stronger, and more athletic and has a higher ceiling as a thrower than those guys, in my opinion. He just hasn't yet mastered the offense. Which can take a couple of years in our current system. As long as we have a brand new QB each year, the first 4-6 games will look like this, sadly. We need continuity at QB.

As a member in good standing of the 'Pedantic Old Farts Association' I am required to invoke my fading and increasingly inaccurate memories of the Ron Van de Pol / Bobby Biggs and Dan Carmazzi /Jim Speck QB controversies of ancient times. There were several others in the decades since but I was front and center for those two in the early Sochor years.

I think that is part of the fun of sports as a fan (while it is often torture for the humans involved). It is good to remember that some all-time great athletes were not can't miss out of the box.

We are blessed with riches at QB in Davis - we have two, probably 3 guys who could start at various schools in the FCS.
