As much as I don’t like team Hawai’i, we were definitely rooting for the Bows last night against UCSB.

I honestly thought we were out of the fourth place spot after losing to Fullerton, but we somehow have a chance. It really is the Wild Big West!

Another Thursday road loss snd Saturday victory. I know the game feature different opponents (like a Thursday in Hawaii) but this trend seems telling. Seems like a competitive disadvantage for us to have 5 games like that while others have to only deal with a single trip yo NorCal. Gonna be worse next year unless we take longer road trips (leave day before).

If you take out the Thursday night loss at Hawaii, we are 1-3 on Thursday in SoCal, 2-1 on Saturday. Hopefully, next week we can break the Thursday night skid when we take on the Beach who should be out of the playoff picture.

No surprises here, but it's nowhere good for the Aggies, who are in danger of falling all the way to the 8 seed if Cal Poly keeps winning. A 4 seed is still possible especially if the Ags can tie with UCSB over whom they have the tiebreaker. Unfortunately, a more likely outcome is a 5 seed as all of the teams ahead of us play each other and both UCSD and Fullerton have a chance to get to 12 wins while UCD will have to beat Irvine down in SoCal.

The Big West is always very competitive and this year it is especially so. Yes, were are currently in 7th place but look at that log jam in the middle of the standings. A lot can still happen in this free-for-all.

We were within 2 points of 1st place Hawai'i last night with 24 seconds left in the game so we have shown that we can play with any team in the conference. Great effort by the Ags playing without Jalen Stokes and Nils Cooper. Omer Suljanovic, a true freshman that is improving with every game. went out with an injury last night also. We've got a week to, hopefully, heal up before our final 2 road games.

I apologize for all the typos in my post last night. I could blame it on my dyslexic dementia, but the truth is, it was distress from the way the Hawai`i game ended. I've corrected it (I think).

I was just looking at that. Beside Irvine over USCB, I guess we’re Hawaii and Poly fans tonight?

For what it's worth, here are the Big West tiebreaker rules:

If none of the above work, the seed is determined by a coin toss.

I’m going to look at upcoming schedules and make a guess at where everyone ends up. I’d be happy with Fullerton in the first round. Or poly.

Yesterday was a big deal for UC Davis. All the "right" teams lost leaving us only a game behind third place. A split on the road next week would mean the Ags finish 11-9. A 6 way tie would be possible!
Here's the remaining schedules for "The 5":

    UCSD: at Fullerton and UCSB
CSUN: at Bakersfield, home v. Fullerton
    UCSB: home v. UCSD
Fullerton: home v. UCSD, at CSUN
Cal Poly: at UCI, home v. Bakersfield

    My guesses

    UCSD : W, L. 12-8
    CSUN : W, W 13-7
    UCSB : W 12-8
    CSF : L, L 10-10
Poly L, W. 10-10 (they play hime vs Irvine)
    Us W, L. 11-9

So, I’d predict us at 6, playing either Fullerton or Poly.

For completeness, I think Irvine and Hawaii both win out with Hawaii having the easiest time of it.

    Then it’s tiebreaker city!

Today we have to hope that Bakersfield can upset CSUN and Fullerton can do likewise to UCSD (and they're both at home). If the Ags can beat the Beach, there will be a four way tie for the third seed.

CSUN won, but UCSD lost, so the 4 seed is still in reach. "All" we have to do is beat Irvine on Saturday.

It did wind up in a four way tie, but for the 4 seed! We know that either UCSD or UCSB will finish 11-9 and it's likely that Fullerton will lose to CSUN. If we upset the Anteaters, the way I figure it, we need to root for the Gauchos, because if they beat UCSD, the Ags win the tie-breaker unless Fullerton wins, then I don't have the mental capacity to figure that one out. If we lose to UCI, the best we can do is the 5 seed.

I’d love the #5 and a shot at Poly. That seems like the most beatable of the bottom 3 (we won’t be 4); although I still cringe thinking of the barrage of 3s they put up in Henderson in the second half last year!

From the Big West Men's Basketball Board:

    UC Davis (11-8)

4 seed with win + Northridge win + Santa Barbara win
5 seed with win + Fullerton win + Santa Barbara win (* 4 or 5 seed *) OR with win + Northridge win + San Diego win OR with loss + Northridge win + San Diego win
6 seed with win + Fullerton win + San Diego win OR with loss + Fullerton win + Santa Barbara win
7 seed with loss + Santa Barbara win

Anyone think he’s sitting them because this game doesn’t really matter that much? We made the tourney. He’d rather have players have extra rest than push it for a higher seed that’s unlikely at this point and has been for the last few games?
  • DrMike

probably for Sevilla, maybe for Cooper, no for Stokes (feels like we won’t see him until after we win the Big West tournament).

The team has had the tendency to play to the level of their competition (for better or worse...) And that's why we play the game. I'm not holding my breath, but there is always a chance.
