It’s been a long while since the Aggies were in Honolulu losing to Hawai`i and both teams are very different now. Hawai`i has faded. At home on Saturday, they barely won in overtime after UCSB’s Aidan Mahoney fouled out. In their two losses to CSUN and Cal Poly, the Rainbows 3-point shooting disappeared, as the combined percentage of those two games was 20.1%. Another problem for Hawai’i has been the injury to their point guard, Aaron Hunkin-Claytor who was averaging 3.9 assists per game, fifth best in the Big West (the Aggies’ Brayden Fagbemi and Marcus Wilson, by the way, are third and fourth). This might account for the way they have been turning the ball over at the rate of nearly 14 per game and their assist to turnover ratio is 1.0. Finally, Hawai`i has not been good on the road, which has been a common problem, having gone 4-4. Meanwhile, we know how up and down the Ags have been all season and it’s time to give up on seeing any consistency. If the “good” Ags show up on Thursday. They can win. Otherwise…

I am really curious how the basketball team from Hawaii will adjust to a wider MW schedule next year.

As recently as 2012, before they joined the Big West, Hawai'i was in the WAC with such schools as Boise State, Nevada and UNLV. Going back to 1999, the WAC also included Wyoming, Air Force, BYU and Colorado State. They were competitive back then and fans here thought Hawai`i was stepping down and would dominate in the Big West. Not so much.

1.5 point underdogs with most sites predicting a slightly higher probability of Hawaii win. Line opened at 2.5 - maybe a sign we are healthier than we may have thought?

Hope it’s a decent crowd especially for Niko - he’s been a hell of an Aggie and a fan favorite. He deserves a nice send off. As does Daugherty who I think is the only other senior.

From Gauchodan's Big West Hoops Substack column:

6:00 PM: Hawai’i at UC Davis — The Rainbow Warriors (19-7, 11-5) begin their final Big West road trip, and it may be their toughest yet. Hawai’i, which has split each of its previous 4 forays to California in conference play, may need to sweep UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton to remain at least tied for the Big West lead heading into the final week. Dre Bullock has averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals over the last 2 games. The Aggies (17-11, 10-7), also leaving for the Mountain West Conference at the end of the season, are playing their final home game of the 2025-26 season. UC Davis finds itself in a 3-way tie for 4th place and would win the tiebreaker for a 1st-round bye if the season ended this morning. Connor Sevilla is averaging 15.0 points over the last 3 games and has made 35 of his last 37 free throw attempts (.946).

    Other games tonight:

Riverside @ Santa Barbara 6 pm
Long Beach @ Cal Poly 7 pm
    Irvine @ CSUN 7 pm
Bakersfield @ San Diego 7 pm

we’re not going to get any help from the other games unless Long Beach can surprise against Poly. The beach has to win out and Poly lose out else they are missing Henderson. Not likely.

The Honolulu paper made note of Nils Cooper, so I assume he's healthy?

I doubt they get an injury report. We hasn’t missed any games just not played as much. We’ll see what the starters look like!

43-31Hawai’i at the half. We’re really missing the defense of Stokes and Cooper. Bows are shooting 59%.

Scott and Coach Simpson have made it pretty clear what the problem is. Hawai`i is hitting an uncharacteristic number of 3s and the Ags are turning the ball over to an embarrassing extent. My question is WHY all those sloppy passes?! Are the guys putting too much pressure on themselves. They need to figure it out or this is going to be a big L.

We obviously lost this one in the first half. You could argue that Hawai`i won it by hitting all those 3s or that the Ags lost it by turning the ball over 12 times. It was both of those things together as UCD outscored Hawai`i when they limited the turnovers and played better defense. They still had issues as some of the freshmen lost their composure. Wilson had a gret game but he was trying to do it all by himself in the second half. This one really hurt.

stokes took a nasty fall onto his head vs UCR - he wasn’t in the arena so guessing concussion. Cooper has been dealing with some type of leg injury (looks like groin based on how he was being wrapped a few weeks back and how he was walking gingerly before leaving UCR game). Then Omer hurts his ankle in the second half. Yikes!

We just couldn’t get it below 4 down the stretch. We’d get it there then give up a big bucket and get shut out in our end….back to 8. The double T was an odd call - that would have been big.

Without stokes and Cooper (and Omer late) we can’t match up with their length. Add in their deadly 3 point shooting and it’s a tough end of the home schedule.

In the first half, it was 14-13 us with about 12 minutes left. Sevilla and Daugherty came out (Chappell was already out) and Les dugdeep to get Rawlins in the game - desperate to give short bench some rest. That combo didn’t go well - by the time Conner and Carl got back in at the 8 mark, we were down 27-20, and lost any momentum. No knock on Chase - he’s not not physically ready for a team like Hawaii.

Chappell has been struggling from 3; Conner was off last night. Got to get healthy before Henderson.
