This game marks the beginning of a very tough stretch of road games for the Ags as 5 of their last 7 are away and against three very strong opponents including the Tritons. Despite being 6-7 we can’t forget that they beat us in Davis after the Aggies missed 43 field goal attempts including 19 from beyond the arc. Still, UCSD has all the signs of a team that hasn’t figured it out yet. They lost to Cal Poly on a Thursday on the road then turned around, went home and beat Hawai`i. Their longest winning streak in the Big West is two games but they’ve lost four of their last five including two at home.

They’ve pretty much kept the same starting lineup to include Alex Chaikin who dropped 19 on the Aggies and Emanuel Prospere II who had 14 points in addition to 7 assists and 6 rebounds that night. The questions are going to be which Triton team shows up and which Aggie team shows up.

4.5 point underdogs with BetMGM giving Triton’s a 60% chance of covering the spread. Loss at home was tough. Up 6 at half in a defensive struggle; lose giving up 55 in the second half. That second half they looked as good as anyone offensively with their motion and passing leading to great shots.

I remember a couple years back (2024) when they walloped us at home (92-59) with starters in late raining down 3’s and having a good old time doing so. We went back there and beat them in a tough rematch, a game in the 70’s. Hopefully history repeats. I really disliked Bryce Pope and his short-shorts after that first game!

From Gauchodan's Big West Basketball Substack column:
7:00 PM: UC Davis at UC San Diego — GAME OF THE NIGHT.

The Aggies (15-9, 8-5) are on a 3-game winning streak to move into a tie with CSUN for 4th place in the Big West. UC Davis is just one game behind UCSB and 1-1/2 games behind UC Irvine and Hawai’i in the nip-and-tuck Big West race. UC Davis is 2-3 vs. Quad 2 or better schools but lost to UCSD at home on Jan. 22. Guard Marcus Wilson is the reigning Big West Player of the Week after averaging 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in wins over UCSB and Cal Poly. The Tritons (16-9, 6-7) lost a tough one at Hawai’i last Saturday and have now seen defeat in 4 of their last 5 games. Emanuel Prospere II is currently out with an injury with an exact timeline for his return unconfirmed, but head coach Clint Allard has indicated that he will be back this year. The Tritons have been relying on freshman guard Hudson Mayes to fill in during Prospere’s absence.
Theyre talking about Beattie but last time Chaiken and Mayes combined dropped 38 on us.

Tritons on 12-0 run as we go cold. Down 15-9 after 10

Q: How did we get 5 turnovers and 9 rebounds and only have 9 points?
    A: 4 for 16 shooting.

Compared to their 70%. They get to the hoop really well and have been the aggressors on both ends. Really have our offense stagnated . Down 20-11 with this 16-2 run

29-15 at the 4;00 mark. Can’t get a ball to roll in.

    And miss two FTs

Wow just turned it on. Going to be down 13 or more at half. That’s not good

We really look sluggish. Some of that is credit to UCSD but we’re a step slow. We look right shooting - can’t get a shot to fall.

Down 33-20 at half, zero points from Cooper and Chappell, only 2 from Sevilla.

Honestly, some of the worst offense I’ve seen in a while in our past two games…

Rough first half. Last time against these guys it was the second half. They better drink their energy drinks at the half.

I wasn't counting but the Ags missed a whole lot of point blank shots. They're also playing like UC Avis again--no D. The only thing they're doing well is on the offensive boards but that's largely because they've missed so man shots.

SD shooting 59% to our 27%...that won't get it done...

I can't remember ever seeing Jim Les sitting down during a game. He must have been really dispirited. Can't blame him. This was as bad as I've seen the Ags play this season. Bol Dengdit was an unlikely offensive force. The guy was shooting 27% from 3 and hit 4 of 6 tonight. Reminds me of the game that Jaden Alexander of Bakersfield had up in Davis. In this case, Dengdit didn't make the difference as the difference was UCD's perfomance or lack of performance. Nils Cooper has almost turned into a liability with no points and and 2 turnovers to go with 3 rebounds.

Some odd stats from a miserable game. Ags had 14 steals and forced 21 turnovers while shooting 1 for 7 from the free throw line. Tritons had only 4 offensive rebounds but 8 blocks. A lot of those blocks came from poor shot selection by the Aggies, surprisingly by Wilson. I don't think UCSD won as much as UCD lost it.

Glad I won't have to listen to the UCSD play by play guy again. hHe's about as lame as it gets.

Well, on a brighter note, the Aggie women beat UCSD 88-80 in triple overtime. San Diego came into the game with on one loss in conference and that loss was also from the Ags. This was the first 3 OT game in Aggie women's basketball history. Megan Norris broke the single game rebounding record with 29 rebounds for the game. Amazing!

Since the switch to the new lineup, Cooper and Chappell have been non-factors. We cdd sad my afford that since Stokes in limited offensively, as is Fagbemi. I’d like to see Daugherty back to the bench for instant offense and Cooper bsck in. We won 3 straight with that lineup but it was a struggle offensively throughout.

I don't like Chappell and Cooper coming off the bench. I'd rather see them starting with Daughtery, Fagbemi and Stokes getting solid minutes off the bench.

The way Cooper played tonight I have to disagree. No doubt that he has the ability, but he's lost his mojo, at least as an Aggie, and I think he'll be gone next season.

These are Cooper’s and Chappell’s recent stats. Chappell was good vs SB but the two have combined for almost nothing in this 4 game stretch. The rotation seemed more smooth prior to the change with Carl off the bench.

I hate the idea of losing talented upperclassman. Speaking of….Pablo Tomba has started all 24 games for LSU averaging 7/7.
