Even with Sac State's departure, I'm really surprised that the Sky is inviting both Utah Tech and Southern Utah. I thought SUU burned their bridges or that the NW schools wanted them gone to reduce the huge conference size?
Well this is interesting… adding SUU and Utah Tech seems to be the Big Sky backfilling Sac States exit… and future proofing the conference for when davis inevitably leaves for the FBS in the future. Can’t see any other reason to add Utah Tech as well.
Utah makes geographic and cultural sense for Big Sky. Not sure which is more likely first, though. Davis taking football to MWC or Poly folding football.
Cal Poly has a long history of football. The school's enrollment continues to increase, and just spent about $45-50 Million on the John Madden Football Center (you have heard of him, right?), as well as upgrades to the north endzone area. Football isn't going anywhere at Cal Poly.
Also, there is a new athletics director, so hoping whoever is selected does a better job than the last guy.
to be clear, I do not wish for Poly to drop football. My preference would have actually been for Sac, Poly, and Davis to all be relevant at the same time and force the Big Sky center of gravity south with EWU and UM watching from the simp seats. But that wasn’t meant to be. I very much enjoy the tradition of D2 and then FCS football but I do think it will become increasingly hard to sustain in the west, so schools and conferences doing some future proofing seems prudent.
@ fugawe09 - Yeah, Cal Poly was good when Davis and Sac were bad a decade or more ago, then Davis and Sac got good and Cal Poly got bad.
I'm as baffled as the next guy, but hoping things turn around at Cal Poly soon. Don't get me started on the Cal Poly uniform colors.
Kind of starting to think Cal Poly going FCS independent might not be that bad. The Big Sky is too tough a conference and the travel is tough already. Also, don't really care to see SUU and Dixie State.. err Utah Tech added either. Neither really adds much.
