I wasn't aware that a Division III Football League existed in Southern California. Are there any lower division college football teams left in Northern California? I thought there was an Oakland football team, but I can't recall it's lower division or even if it's a college football team.
Just working off my aging memory I don't think there are any D-2 football teams in California anymore. I think Humboldt was the last one standing. I think the only D-3 football teams are those in the SCIAC. The last I heard the Lincoln Oaklanders are still not members of the NCAA or NAIA in any division.
The SCIAC looks pretty cool, with the Sun and Surf Divisions....6 teams total :cool::cool:
Sun:
Pomona-Pitzer
Redlands
La Verne
Surf:
Chapman
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
California Lutheran
A lot of the schools in the conference don't support football, but I seem to remember some of them with teams long ago, like Occidental and Whittier (?)
Whittier is reinstating football for the 2026-27 season to coincide with the admission of Azusa Pacific , so the conference will have eight football teams.
I’m not sure that targeted recruiting of any flavor for an institution that receives federal grants would be allowed these days. Small college finances can be tough so to add football, these schools presumably identified a market of people who want to play and people who will watch that drives value. I think it’s great to see more opportunities. There are a lot of high school football players in California who may want to play in college but aren’t D1 players.
