CSUN Head Coach, Trent Johnson has been fired. He was 14-48 in 2 seasons. CSUN's last winning season was in 2008-09. They are now looking for their 4th coach since 2013.
UCSB Head Coach, Joe Pasternack, withdrew his name from consideration for the Cal job and has signed an extension at UCSB. There is speculation that he received a healthy raise and may have surpassed UCI's Russ Turner as the highest paid head coach in the Big West Conference. He was making $519K prior to signing the extension.
The most recent figures compiled by transparentcalifornia.com are for 2021. That site lists the top 5 employees and their compensation (total pay & benefits) for the University of California system as:
Charles Kelley (Head footbball coach, UCLA) $5,775,150
Justin Wilcox (Head football coach, Cal) $3,989,491
Michael Cronini (Head basketball coach, UCLA) $3,804,308
Jason Roostaeian (Assoc. Clinical Professor, UCLA School of Medicine) $3,426,298
James Mora (Former head football coach, UCLA) $3,104,975
Will someone please tell me how paying a football coach 3-5 million a year helps the higher education of our students. This is so ridiculous and I thought only the creepy southern schools did this nonsense. Yes, i realize that most of the money comes from “booster groups” so no “taxpayer funding involved” (yeah, sure got that BS”, ) but still, what a misuse of the higher education infrastructure of our country to do this stuff. does any of this big money go back in to the actual education of our kids?
What surprises me most is that an associate professor makes $3.4M. That has to include income from grants? It's about 50 times what I made when I was an associate prof. (not adjusted for inflation). Still, I agree that it's insane that so much money is paid to coaches and can only hope it is worth it in terms of revenue to the schools.
I "googled" the assoc. professor. He is apparently a very prominent plastic surgeon.
(That may mean more in Southern California.)
AND UCLA was still paying Jim Mora in 2021, who was released after the 2017 season.
I can't confirm this, but I heard that at one time USC was paying three head coaches...Kiffin, Sarkisian and Helton. ANd Ogeron had been an interim head coach in there at least once.
23-24 WBB coaches roster has been updated on the Athletics website: Pele Gianotti now listed as "Director of Basketball Operations," so that answers that question.
