Notre Dame just announced that it will open its 2023 football season hosting HBCU and FCS opponent Tennessee State. UCLA has already announced that it will play HBCU and FCS teams Alabama State this coming September and North Carolina Central in 2023.
That will leave USC as the only FBS school to never have played an FCS school. (Having backed out of an agreement to play the Ags last season.)
Those games are going to be routes. Don’t really j is that it will be good for anyone except for a paycheck for the HBCUs. Heck if ND and UCLA go that route, schedule Florida A&M or another HBCU with a top notch marching band and a alumni draw.
Would love to see one of those bands and dance teams in person! A friend and I already have a "won the lottery!" plan to go see a bunch of the SWAC bands perform at their home stadiums.
I hope so. The fact that there is such a stigma to playing an FCS opponent is pretty weird. UCLA is certainly a storied program but they haven’t been USC equivalent.
Wonder if USC will eventually schedule FCS.. One of the reasons SC alum opposed the game against UCD was that there were three FBS schools that had never played FCS....USC, and USC's biggest rivals, UCLA and Notre Dame and the USC folks didn't want to hear it from their rivals.
Having nothing to do with FSC or HBCU schools, BYU just backed out of a late season 2023 game against USC and USC went to it's emergency back up school and scheduled San Jose State for their 2023 opener.
