The Aggies finish the non-conference portion of their schedule this year when Gonzaga comes to town. The Zags are ranked #4 in the latest mid-major poll and garnered one first place vote as well. The Aggies are ranked #15.

SERIES NOTES: Gonzaga leads the all-time series with UC Davis by a 3-0 count, but the two programs have not met since a 2008 clash in the WNIT in Spokane, won by the Bulldogs, 81-60... Sunday marks the second meeting between the two programs in Davis since a 71-58 Gonzaga victory in 2007... The Bulldogs also posted a 73-70 win in the inaugural meeting in 2006 in Spokane.

Live TV on ESPN+ at 2 pm.

Some signs of life! (And a ridiculous banked three from Turner to end the quarter.)

Side note for those that couldn't attend: Jen' 10-yr-old son did the Aggie player intros and killed it. :strong:

Tale of two halves: Aggies outscored (44-26) and out-rebounded (17-12) the Zags in the 2nd half after a brutal second quarter put them deep in a hole. At one point Gonzaga was 6-8 from deep and finished 6-13.

Aggie bigs (and Hall and Konrad!) played some tough, tough minutes--lots of banging in the paint.

Tremendous win by the Ags against a very, very good basketball team. Coming back from 17 down was reminiscent of their comeback win in the against Hawaii a couple of years ago to with the Big West Tournament to get the auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Jen should continue to schedule tough pre-conference games every year from now on. The program is at a level now where we should be playing some of the top women's teams in the west each year. That's the best way to continue to elevate the program and to attract athletes who want to play at a very high level.

Watch it now. Everything said is right. I think Sanders is coming doing absolutely great. I also think Swandholm is coming into her own. Great athlete.

Just watched the second half and the lineup up Hall, Konrad, Turner, Svandholm and Stobbart played fantastic together. Gives us better rebounding and defensive flexibility, and like you said, Svanholm is playing very well offensively. Of course, Coach Gross will still start Burns at point, but we'll see a lot of this lineup in crunch time.

Gross has always been slow about playing her bigs together. Not sure why. Svanholm and Stobbart only entered the game late together. This was similar to situations where the Ags needed height in previous seasons, but Gross was slow to put in Bertsch with Stobbart at the same time. Luckily the Aggies were able to make a comeback yesterday and play good defense. In the past, the adjustments were made too late and they lost.

Svanholm and Stobbart (and previously Stobbart and Bertsch) tend to sub for each other--if they are both in, then neither is getting any rest.

Plus the offense runs around a single post, so one of them has to be comfortable playing outside part of the time.

Anyone else catch Sage driving down the lane this game?!

    Just a couple of observations:

    1) those PAC-12 games got our players ready for contact basetball. Watching the play in the paint showed our bigs hanging tough when they hadn't been quite so strong early in the season. Not against the Zags. They gave as much as they got.

    2) CC's scoring is one thing but her defense is in a whole other league. Pull up the replay and watch her in the middle - she's hard as nails against players much taller than she is - playing position basketball. She gives up a little on rebounding when she has to do this but wow, she has really found her game.

    3) Stobbart and Svanholm really looked good together in the 2nd half. I think Russ pointed this out. It'll be interesting to see how Jen choses to use them together during the season.

    4) the 4th quarter was the 2nd quarter - but flipped by teams.

I'm really sorry we had to miss the game but we did see it on ESPN+

Conference is going to be interesting. The overall quality of the teams is rising. At this rate, in a couple years, we could become a 2 bid conference.

    Post-game comments from Jen:

“A game like this shows what kind of team we’re capable of being,” said UC Davis head coach Jennifer Gross. “We’re a program that’s never satisfied with the status quo. We will take this and learn from it and build on it so we’re playing our best basketball in March.”

“This is really a great win for us and it’s the reason we play Stanford and Oregon and Gonzaga and teams like this,” Gross said. “We’re not just playing for the experience, because our program has reached the point where if we play well, we believe we have a chance to win these games. That belief really carried us when we were behind. We picked things up defensively, took care of the ball in the second half and hit some crucial shots.”

“Our goal is to put a product on the floor that people want to watch,” said Gross of her players in Sunday’s game. “It was really fun to get the win and see how many people contributed to this. Early on I felt like we didn’t have a lot of answers and they (Gonzaga) were hitting just about everything. But then we got going and it’s amazing what a couple of shots can do for you.”
