Gould was... really not good

His BEST year had the same record as Hawk's worst (2019) where the Ags still got to 5-7 when basically our whole schedule was FBS or playoff-bound teams

Not that you can really play the "what if" game, but it's interesting to note that Hawk would almost for sure be at .571 overall, .567 league had Cal Poly not cancelled the last game -- twice as many wins as Gould in the same timespan

My main memory of Gould was prior to his first game where he said that from now on, things were going to be organized, implying they weren’t before.
And amusingly, when an opposing coach was trying to say nice things about an upcoming opponent, pretty much all he could come up with was something like “they line up in the right place”

your winning record in league for Biggs includes just the four years and is for both the Great West and Big Sky?

It's not speed to the hole... its speed through the hole.

The irony is Gould's best year (#1), he was playing w Biggs' team.

I recall high school and wannabe coaches predicting the play calls from the stands, typically handoff up the middle. When he brought WR Hemmingsen in, odds were 95% pass play. CJ Spencer leading a comeback effort at SLO, and HC opts for a meaningless FG.

"Phenomenal". I recall a football alum claiming in recruiting, we were being a bit arrogant. Good man. Not wise to promote a long term position coach to HC.

I took Biggs last 4 years for symmetry.

We still had five or so Gould signees on the roster; this year is maybe the end of them. Two of the most prominent are ironically wide receivers, Vaughn and Harrell, who are better suited to Hawkins’ offense.
I wonder what Randy Wright thinks of the three coaches since he’s had an inside view of all three.

I’m not a Gould fan, other than he’s a nice guy. But i think he beat SUC each year.

In 2014 their only victory was Cal Poly.

I know Randy Wright was 4-0 v Sac but at least one of those was under Biggs

ManZan was a blessing and a curse.

Randy played 2010-2013, after redshirting in 2009. So all but the last Sac victory was under Biggs.

My attention fell off during the Gould years, but I followed Randy’s career as he’s from my hometown. I speculate without having watched much of the later years that part of Gould’s problem winning after Randy's era ended was due to his inability to recruit a productive quarterback or to coach them to be productive. Maybe it was the system, but I don’t think that’s all of it.

I was at the golf tournament during the Gould era sitting with one of our more generous donor. Ron made a point of saying hi and my friend said ‘you know,Ron, every week the other team’s QB seems so much better than ours. We have to fix that’. He never did

Have we ever had a 'serviceable' QB take us to the playoffs?

did Gould’s game plan really require a good QB? Wasn’t it basically hope for a short field, then run/run/pass for less than a first down, and then either try to boom a 3-pointer from midfield or punt?

I suppose he might have recruited Harrell and Vaughn just to block but I doubt it.
