LOL. ... Don't bet on anything between 2:30 and 7:30.

The Spartans added 4 or 5 *** recruits, and I believe 3 or 4 Jucos. One OL, one WR, maybe 1-2 DBs.

    From today's Enterprise, Linebackers.

    By Owen Yancher

"Some of those moves include Brandon Jamison from outside linebacker to UCD’s designated pass rusher and star special teamer Ryan Parenteau’s transition to the outside backer position where he’ll be competing for reps with fellow senior Anthony Baumgart.

“For (Brandon) that pass rushing has turned out to be one of the best things he does,” Jackson said remembering Jamison’s eight-tackle outing against Northern Arizona last October. “He’s a track athlete and if he explodes off the ball, no one can block him. He’s going to be playing some D-end as well and that dude can set the school record here in terms of sacks.”

"Anesi said teams need to also look out for linebackers Eric Flowers, Cam Trimble, Quincy Bennett and Montell Bland."

Trimble and Bland Redshirt Freshmen. Parenteau often had a lot of tackles, but I wonder if he got hurt deep, or we're deeper at DB?

Interesting that we would be moving one of our starting safeties to OLB. Hawk and the defensive staff must see something in the DB pipeline that they really love I suppose.

Not unprecedented for us to move a safety to linebacker, or outside linebacker to DE. We might be able to do this during games with these guys, have player out on field move from one position to another
We reallly do seem to have a lot of DBs.
I’m interested in whether Sayles is healthy. Started a game for us as a freshman, redshirted last year.

Wonderful article and a great read. It's really nice that Bruce Gallaudet will be writing these interesting bios about Aggie athletes and other articles about Aggie sports. He did a great job on this one.

Agreed, great piece by Bruce. Looking forward to seeing Maier and Doss connect frequently this season.

Good marketing idea. Can’t rely on newspapers anymore, especially since Enterprise behind paywall and Sac Bee giving local FCS teams little coverage

SB Natio : 12 Potential FBS upsets

    3. UC Davis over San Jose State, Week 1
    Picked by Matt Brown

"UC Davis was just OK last season and didn’t put up too much of a fight against San Diego State, a team far better than SJSU. But the Aggies played very strong FCS teams close, and SJSU is still totally rebuilding under second-year coach Brent Brennan."

S&P+ projected margin: SJSU by 3
    Spread: UC Davis -1.5

New SJSU article says they had problems on the D line, second worst against the run in the nation, and lost their number 1 player.

    "The season outlook

"A good start will be a dominating win over the UC Davis Aggies in game one. The Spartans are expected to win, but they have to do it convincingly. If they get an “average” win, that will be a sign that the season will head down the southern path."

If their run defense is that bad, I think Tehran will be all over them. That will leave the WR's open for Meier. That could lead to an Aggies blow out, if the Ags can play a little D. The Spartans haven't decided on their QB yet. So, I would think they are going to try and run the ball on the Ags. That may be their best choice.
Tehran looks like a monster each time he has carried the ball. A sprinter at 230lbs is a load. If Tehran starts the Sac state game last year- the Ags win easily. Sac State was lucky the clock worked in their favor the second half. And his 90 yard catch and run was called back because of a push in the back.. Which wasn't even necessary part of the play for him to score.

A lot of quality thinking went into that prediction of needing a dominant win.
San Jose has to to be expected to dominate because:
    They were horrible last year,
Still don’t know who their QB should be
Have to replace most the offensive line
    Lost their best defensive lineman
Have a guy who is a true freshmen and walked away from Cal last year after Cal gave him a late offer which looked better to him than his commitment to Cal Poly. This freshman is projected a starter.
In summary a unsettled team. They probably have good running backs, receivers, so we could lose.

Note the spread in the sbnation article has us favored. We should be a much more polished team for the first game. On offense we know who our players are and they know each other. That is a big advantage in the first game, against a rebuilding team with a new offensive coordinator.

New addition to the roster? Joe Albrecht, 6'9", 270# OL from Cornell, hometown South Lake Tahoe. Played JV at Cornell in 2016.

New special team QC coach, Paul Shelton.

Former Aggie Robert Taylor signed with AAF, ran a 4.42 40.

San Jose State HC says (interview, on tape):

Edit - it looks like the coaches rested the upperclassmen, started true freshmen on both sides of the ball.

Played 6 QBs. Montel Aaron started, and reports are he matured. ... QB Chance LaChapelle ("Lala"), a freshman from Sheldon HS in Sac, who sat a year at ARC, was 6 of 8. 6'3", 210#.

    46 Freshman on roster.

  • Riveraggie

Really the defense allowed a pretty high percentage of pass completions and the offense was heavily weighted to throwing, so I don’t think their performance was that significant. All we can take from this is they still are playing a bunch of people at QB and elsewhere
  • movielover

It seems like the production came from QB # 2 and #3. Looks like they kept about 10 starters out? Their fan site says their coach is fired up for us.

"Last season’s primary starter Montel Aaron, now a redshirt sophomore, went 3-for-10 for 70 yards but gained 25 yards on five rushing attempts. Josh Love, a redshirt junior who was the backup most of last season, went 8-for-10 for 68 yards after missing his first two passing attempts."

"Redshirt freshman Terrell Carter completed six of seven passes for 64 yards and a touchdown, and he got 11 yards on the ground on five carries."
