Some thought that the Mustangs were turning things around last season, finishing 8-12 in the Big West after an 0-20 season in 2023-24. What second year coach Mike DeGeorge was able to do was to instill a solid offense that scored a lot of points and to win to the extent that had not been seen in nearly 30 years in San Luis Obispo). He’s continuing to do so. Cal Poly is averaging over 80 points per game. Trouble is that in compiling a 5-9 record through December, their defense was allowing over 87 ppg. It was a possibility that the Mustangs had figured out the D because in Big West play this month, they were able to hold UCSD to 65 in an upset, but then they lost to CSUN on Thursday giving up 95. Earlier this season they split two other conference games losing to UCR but downing Fullerton, both offensive shootouts.

Coach DeGeorge had them playing as tough a preseason schedule as any Big West School. They opened with a loss to USC, then lost to Colorado State, and UCLA, but got an upset victory over Utah. They also beat Seattle, which seems to have scheduled half the Big West in preseason. Their home record is an unimpressive 3-5, although one of them was the win against UCSD.

Given their offensive output it should be no surprise that Cal Poly has three of the Big West’s top ten scorers. They are led by sophomore Hamad Mousa, #10, a transfer guard from Qatar via Dayton. He averages 21.7 ppg., best in the conference. No surprise that he has already jacked up 130 trey attempts hitting on over 40% of them. At 6’ 8” he also leads the team in rebounds, over 6 per game. The Mustangs must have recruited at the Olympics because in addition to Mousa, they have players from Slovenia, Uruguay, Canada, Serbia, New Zealand, France and Stockton. It’s interesting that Mousa is the only significant player who transferred in. The rest are either returning players or freshmen. Starting the season playing a three guard lineup, the other two high scorers are also guards: #9 Peter Bandelj (15.1) ppg and #34 Cayden Ward (15.6 ppg.), also both sophomores. Jake Davis and Guzman Vasilic log a lot of minutes substituting (and recently starting) at guard. They combine to add 13 ppg. and 6 rpg.

The frontcourt consists of freshmen Austin Goode and 6’ 9” Ali Assran. There is only one other forward on the entire roster who plays much, Troy Plumtree. In fact, in recent games they have started five guards and I would expect to see that against UCD. I expect the whole game to look like the beginning of the UCSB game as far as the Mustangs offense is concerned. The Aggies will need to come out shooting.

It’ll be an interesting lineup Saturday, I suspect. Niko came off the bench all 3 games last year, playing about 15 minutes per game. I would imagine a combo of Daugherty and Stojes fills those minutes vx the guard-centric Mustangs. We ‘stopped’ them in both regular season wins, but they went off in the second half in Henderson

Ags are a 2.5 point favorite in this one and the over/under is 165.5. If Northridge can get 95 against Cal Poly, the century mark is in sight for UC Davis which is no presumption of a victory.

Thanks for the write-up, Toke. Cal Poly is always an interesting team to watch and Coach Mike DeGeorge really seems to have turned their program around.

Hopefully our Aggie defense is better this game because they have good offensive players that can shoot like it’s nobody’s business.

Rocak not starting. Hope he's okay.

I was under the impression that Rocak did not start because Cal Poly has a five guard lineup.

Odd that Suljanovic went in and not Rocak.

he played about 15 minutes a game vs poly last year and never started. Offense is playing well. Poly’s offense is so ragged.

I was just confused because I usually don’t see two opposing players on our end.

Aggie's defense has been great. Cal Poly has only hit 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.

part of that is horrible shot selection by Poly. If it weren’t for Erkel’s 2 3’s, their numbers would really look horrible. I think they are 2-16.

Omar has really regressed on offense. Like to see him get an easy bucket to take some pressure off him.

    38-25 just under 2

Up 40-30 at half. Unfortunately, Fagbemi missed two FTs there at the end. Good half on both ends. They can’t possibly shoot this poorly in the second half, so we’ll have to get the offense going again - I’m sure the bench will be shorter

40-30 Ags at the half. It feels like the Ags should be up 15+ though.

Cal Poly has played horribly so far. Statistically, UCD is beating them in every category except steals and turnovers. With their offense, look out for the Mustangs to explode in the second half. Look for Mousa to go off, although he had a reasonabe 10 points in the first half. I don't think Rocak is going to get into the game. I saw him on the bench and his sweatshirt was still on. Maybe he's a little dinged up.

Our offense is tagged coming out of the break. Nobody is trying to get into the paint. Long possessions with not great shots at the end. Up 8 with 16

Seems like the Ags are missing a lot of shots in the paint. Cooper, for one, is forcing his shots. At least the Ags still have a 9 point lead about half way through the second period.

Poly’s defense is much better this half - our rhythm isn’t great, and we’re not getting the open looks we did in the first half

1 point game...our defense has not been making it difficult for Poly...we're gonna be lucky to escape with a win...

I hate having been right about Cal Poly and Mousa getting their offense going. Credit to them going 26 of 28 from the charity stripe.

Poly wins 84-78. I feel like we could have been up by 15-20 in the first half but Les began subbing deep on the bench like he did against Bakersfield and the big lead dwindled. Still, we were up by 10 at the half and couldn't hold it.

I know Les feels like he needed to essentially play guards only but I think having Rocak in the paint, at least for some of the game, would have presented problems for Poly. Poly out scored us in the paint 28-22 and we committed a lot of fouls when they went to the hoop. Rocak could have made those shots difficult or made a few blocks. Sevilla was way off his shot...3-14 too.

No FG's for the Ags in the last 5 and 1/2 minutes.

it’s the last line that killed us - the offense was so sluggish late in the half that we never seemed to get a good look.

    Disappointing loss

In the radio, post-game interview, Les said he held Rocak out because he felt like Poly would have "made things difficult for him since they don't play any bigs." He said, "we may need to reevaluate that when we play them again since "Niko is so important to us."
