The Golden Horseshoe has been secured, but it's no time for the boys to rest on their laurels because the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona are coming to town. The Lumberjacks come to Davis with a 4-2 record and were ranked 13th in FCS going into their match up against Montana State; we'll see what they're ranked here in a day or two though. Here are their games to date...

    @ Arizona State (4-1) - L 19-38
    vs Utah Tech (1-5) - W 38-31 (Aggies won 31-24 @ Utah Tech)
    @ Southern Utah (1-5) - W 52-49 (Aggies won 50-34 vs Southern Utah)
    vs Incarnate Word (2-4) - W 31-23
    @ Portland State (0-6) - W 31-17
    vs Montana State (4-2) - L 10-34

We have two mutual opponents on the schedule so far and both teams came out with 2 wins. Their game against Southern Utah was much closer than ours though. The win against Incarnate Word looked good at the time as they were a ranked opponent, but they are now sporting a 2-4 record and look to be struggling. Montana State is a very good team, but you would have to think that NAU is disappointed it wasn't more competitive with both teams being ranked.

Offensively, NAU is scoring 30.2 points per game with 265.8 yards passing and 141.3 yards rushing per game. Defensively, they are allowing opponents to score 32 points per game with 229.5 yards passing and 166.5 yards rushing per game.

The Lumberjacks are led by junior QB Ty Pennington who so far on the season has completed 61.8% of his passes for 1557 yards with 9 passing TDs to only 2 INTs. He's also gained 194 rushing yards on 43 attempts with 2 rushing TDs. Pennington has a plethora of weapons at WR, but he has 1 clear top target and that is redshirt senior WR Kolbe Katsis who has 27 receptions for 486 yards with 4 receiving TDs. Next closest receivers have 16 receptions, 190 yards, and 2 receiving TDs.

In addition to their productive passing game, the Lumberjacks are sport a dynamic duo at RB. Their main guy is redshirt junior RB Seth Cromwell who has gained 314 yards on 71 carries (4.2 yards per rush) with 6 rushing TDs. They have also given plenty of juice, however, to sophomore RB Quran Gossett who has gained 239 yards on 49 carries (4.6 yards per rush) with 3 rushing TDs.

On defense they are led by their do-it-all guy in redshirt senior LB Travis Arena who has 47 total tackles with 5 sacks. The Lumberjacks have forced 4 INTs so far this season and half of them have gone to senior S Jaylen Wesley who also has a team high 5 PBUs. Interestingly enough, through 6 games their defense has forced only 1 and recovered 0 fumbles.

Their senior punter, Ben D'Aquila, has a very strong leg as he's averaging 47.6 yards per boot which would put him top 10 statistically in the FBS. Their kicker, sophomore Samuel Hunsaker, is 6/7 on field goal attempts and is averaging 62 yards per kickoff with 15 of 28 kickoffs going for touchbacks. Their punt returns have been nothing special so far this season, but the aforementioned WR Kolbe Katsis is one of their kick returners and is averaging 25.4 yards per return, so given the chance he will do some damage.

Overall, this should be a good match up. I think NAUs ranking going into this last week was a little inflated due to a win against UIW who is struggling more than folks thought they would (preseason top 5 ranked, but now sitting with a 2-4 record) and then they ran into the MSU meat grinder. Their passing game is very productive and could have field day against our battered secondary. We just didn't run the ball much against Poly, but I think we are going to have to have Fisher and Vargas churning out yards to keep their offense off the field in order to win this game.

Update Massey has the Aggies with a 65% chance of a W

    GO AGS!

The loss of Rex Connors and probably Porter as well is a huge hit to the defense. What a shame.

I hope it was a learning lesson for the coaching staff that you let your players play their position and it isn't worth getting cute with it just for the sake of it. There was no logical reasoning for Rex taking that snap other than "wouldn't it be fun if we got Rex a TD" but look where it got us. Monumental lack of judgement on the coaching staff's part in my honest opinion.

Like I said, I think grinding this game out with Fisher and Vargas will be key. NAU is reliant on their dynamic passing game. Keep em off the field and the Aggies have a chance.

Regarding the goal line play that hurt Rex, wasn’t it the same play that put Lan out 2 different years?

We’re heading into this game with possibly only 2/5 DBs that started in week 1. Yikes

I'm not going to go and blame the coaching staff for what has happened to Rex. The only thing I will say is that when you've played nothing but defense and maybe some special teams for the past 4-5 years, then you suddenly are asked to run the ball, it can be a different mind set with different factors entering the fold that you just aren't prepared for...like running into the line and guys falling around your knees and ankles. It's beyond unfortunate for Rex, and terrible for the team and the Conference.

What is Porter's status? A fractured bone in his foot?

I just watched the tape of NAU and Montana State. NAU looks beatable - they can get dangerous when their offense plays in rhythm. I think we match up well, but it's a pretty even fight, thankfully at home. Everybody needs to play well for the Aggies to win next Saturday...and we're fighting without all the bullets in the gun right now, so every shot counts.

How many bodies do we have left?

I was just looking at the ticket page for the game, and most of the sections show 'low availability'. the west side has very limited seats. Be nice to get another full crowd with an enthusiastic student section.

That's good to hear. I'll have a busy pregame. Fraternity alumni tailgate, brewfest, and Champion Aggie pregame at the genome building. Looking forward to a fun day!

Attendance has been fantastic so far this year. The freshman on campus seem much more interested in athletics than they were when I was a freshman (I’m graduating this quarter). Looking forward to seeing how brewfest goes, the pre-game stuff has been really cool recently. I’m not in a frat but the frat tailgate was pretty well done on the practice field last week.

I sure hope it will be a big crowd with the students showing up in force and being very loud. It looks like we have an unusually high number of injuries and will be limping into the game. Our depth will be severely tested in this game.

ran a ton of wildcat on the goal line with Lan successfully the last couple of years, not sure if the injuries were during those plays

almost positive neither injury were wildcats - if memory serves, both occurred on downfield tackles.

Can’t recall ever seeing anyone injured on a wildcat. This one was a freak play.

Closest thing I can think of is I think Trey Lance in SF might have gotten injured on a designed QB run that year where Purdy was eventually discovered. I don’t feel up to searching out the clip to see that again though.

But yeah unusual, but not unheard of. Since the start of the Hawkins era there’s been something like 4-5 guys who were doing that Wildcat package and this is the first serious injury I remember

What is Porter Conners injury status?

Was the play where Tehran Thomas injured at eastern washington in 2018 a direct snap to him?

In the game thread it was reported to be a wildcat play.

Rex's injury occurred as his forward progress had been initially stopped. He sort of twisted and ended up with his back to most of their defense, which was jumping on and pushing the pile back. He was driving backwards to push and the whole thing caved in on him. Guessing the injury occurred from his leg drive and the weight of the pile collapsing on it. Truly unfortunate but it does no good to second guess and blame the coaching staff. It's done and they have to live with the consequences, we're just fans and injuries are part of the game. The best coaches and playcallers on the planet make mistakes and have plays they want back every week. Yes, losing an all-American hurts conference and national championship hopes and you won't replace his on-field leadership; but I would argue the sheer number of other injuries are equally as concerning. Next man up at a lot of positions. Go Ags!

I think Coach Hawk used to say something along the lines of "you cannot truly be great without facing adversity and overcoming it" i.e. the hero's journey. Maybe cheesy/overly optimistic, but by that logic, we should be grateful; this adversity gives the '25 Ags an opportunity to write a story for the ages.

We have the opportunity/challenge to change the identity of our team, develop a bunch of young talent, and fill a leadership vacuum. With 4 FCS wins under our belt and a bye after NAU, there's time to figure it out and put ourselves to the test vs. Idaho and Montana State. Our fate is in our hands for the playoffs.

    NEXT MAN UP.

Lan injured on the goal line vs. Eastern as well (2023?). Not sure if that was a direct snap.

We still are strong at Rex’s position, the team loaded up with graduate safeties. There is a fall off but we are still good at safety.
They need to address the pass defense in the middle of the field. Porter was very mobile as a middle linebacker, and like Rex had a nose for the ball, Sievers is a red shirt freshman, Rutchena is athletic for his size but somewhat ponderous. Cal Poly had some big plays throwing in the middle of the field. Defense has also lost a corner, where we were thinner at than at safety.
  • SochorField

The lack of speed in the middle of the field was pretty glaring to me on a handful of plays.

In past years (think pre-Hawkins) we were completely out of games when a couple starters went down.
The program's depth is vastly improved now.
Getting closer to the level of depth that UM/MSU are able to keep yearly.

Agreed on the middle of the field issues. We gave up some explosives in the same area with Rex in there, so teams see something they're attacking. We did give up two TD up the seam vs. SLO so whatever it is (scheme or personnel) it needs to be fixed. Every defensive call has a weakness. Getting thin at Corner, hopefully they can get back

In order to comfortably make it in the playoffs, we need to be at least 4-2 in the next six games for an 8-3 overall record. It's possible to get in with a 7-4 overall record, but I don't want to push our luck.

To go 4-2 in the future, then I'm hoping to get at least an equivalent result like this:

    #14 Northern Arizona WIN
    @Northern Colorado WIN
    Idaho State WIN
    @#11 Idaho LOSS
    @#5 Montana State LOSS
    #29 Sacramento State WIN

If that's the outcome of this season, it means Pinnick flipped the switch all year. I have a feeling we'll be in a bit of a shootout this Saturday.
  • Riveraggie
    339
Pinnick being good is a given, but he may be even better last half of season. With Zach Jones’ emergence as the last threat Pinnick has five threats to throw to, and he uses them all. The offense should get the game average up to the 40 points in conference games we achieved last year.

Don’t know if you included Ian Simpson in your 5 but he has really emerged as a receiver and has some speed - Aggies fastest TE from what I have seen. He beat a corner to the edge for extra yards on one of his catches at SLO.

That's my math as well, with the one caveat being that if we had to take a third loss NAU is likely the most tolerable. Playoff dreams are probably dead with a UNC or ISU loss though

ISU is the team I’m most worried about. We will have to put up 45+

. I was just referring to the guys filling the usual receiving positions, 3 wr, tight end and running back. We hadn’t seen much from the third wideout until last week, Simpson is great.
