What a difference a day can make! The Aggies beat UCSD yesterday 10-9 by scoring 5 runs in the top of the 9th. Unfortunately, today was a complete disaster as the Tritons beat the Ags 23-0! They were ahead 19-0 after the first 3 innings. I wonder if losing by 23 runs is the worst loss in Aggie history?
The WAC has a mercy rule but the Big West does not. If I had to guess I would say it's because the rule is intended to keep visiting teams from missing their flights. Before Hawaii joined nobody was flying to/from games in the Big West for baseball. A bus league doesn't have the same time constraints. Once UCD + Hawaii leave, and CBU joins it will resemble a convenient bus league, unless Utah Valley accepts its invitation.
I think it would be funny (but not practical) if basketball had one. UCD is up by 40 at the half. Enjoy the dance team's routine, then go home everyone. It would potentially prevent garbage time injuries.
This was partially the fault of the coach this time. They would lose by a lot regardless, but he's been toying around with the rotation lately, having freshman pitchers M. Barnes + Frutchey have piggyback starts with established starters Tyler Wood+ Noel Valdez following as relievers. This may pay dividends next year when Green + Valdez are gone + they have two experienced sophomores ready to step in, but not this year. M. Barnes was excellent in relief, but that hasn't carried over to starting yet. He retired only 1 batter today. By the time they got Wood into the game the Tritons had already built a good lead + their bats were on fire. Wood didn't do much better + the game plan backfired.
