SACRAMENTO — UC Davis and Sacramento State have announced early plans to collaborate on a new shared football facility located in West Sacramento. The proposed stadium, tentatively named the Causeway Coliseum, would seat approximately 25,000 fans and serve as the home field for both programs starting in 2029.

The joint project is estimated to cost around $450 million and is being described by university officials as an opportunity to pool resources and build a modern facility that benefits both institutions. The stadium would be located roughly halfway between the two campuses, near Raley Field, and would align with West Sacramento’s broader plans to revitalize the city’s riverfront and River Walk area.

The announcement follows Sacramento State’s recent exploration of building a new stadium, and its stated intention to pursue membership in a restructured Pac-12 Conference. UC Davis, meanwhile, recently announced that it will join the Mountain West Conference in all conference-sponsored sports, except for football, which will continue to compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Big Sky Conference.

University officials believe that a joint-use stadium could raise the national profiles of both programs and position them as viable candidates for future elevation to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The facility is being designed to meet FBS facility standards, positioning both programs to pursue opportunities that may arise from future conference realignment.

“This project is about long-term vision,” said Mark Orr, director of athletics at Sacramento State. “It reflects the growth of our program and the region as a whole. A shared stadium in West Sacramento gives us the ability to think big — something worthy of our fans, student-athletes, and future ambitions.”

Rocko DeLuca, UC Davis director of athletics, echoed the sentiment.

“This is a smart move for both universities,” DeLuca said. “It strengthens the Causeway rivalry, creates better infrastructure for our teams, and positions us well for what's coming in college athletics over the next decade.”

University administrators said construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with the goal of completing the stadium ahead of the 2029 football season. Funding for the project will come from a combination of contributions from both universities, and the city of West Sacramento, and officials emphasized that the stadium will be built without increasing student fees at either campus.

In addition to shared athletic spaces, the facility will feature sustainability-focused infrastructure and is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification, with planners citing goals such as solar energy integration, water reuse systems, and the use of recycled construction materials. The stadium is also expected to serve as a multi-use venue, with plans to host concerts, high school championships, and regional sporting events to benefit the broader Sacramento region.

Under the current proposal, UC Davis and Sacramento State would alternate home game weekends during the fall, with a flexible turf and lighting system allowing the field and stadium environment to be customized for each team. Officials also noted that the annual Causeway Classic would remain a neutral-site rivalry game with split fan sections and alternating designations for “home” team status each year.

Both universities plan to release additional information as the project moves through the planning and approval process.

Link appears to be dead as of right now, but my initial reaction is that I'm not a huge fan. If the Aggies are looking to go the Mountain West then a stadium upgrade is surely needed, but I don't like it being so far away from campus. We already have trouble getting students to home games and now we're telling that they have to travel to see their own team play? Also, I just don't really want to share anything with Sac State, but that's just my opinion.

Same. Sac loves it, but we don't need it. Add seats at UC Davis Health Stadium.

Edit: does the architect play the French horn and throw a 120-MPH fastball in hiking boots?

The author of this article has a very strange sense of humor. Haha guys, I tricked you with fake stadium news !

I knew something was fishy when they mentioned building the stadium near Raley Field. For one thing it hasn't been called Raley Field since before the pandemic. A Sac Bee person writing a serious article would call it Sutter Health Park. They are sticklers about calling Sac-area things by the proper names, if nothing else. Of less importance is there's basically nowhere to put a stadium that size, not even if you demolished SHP.

Speaking of jokes involving Sutter Health Park, the A's lost 18-3 in their West Sacramento opener to the Chicago Cubs. It was so bad that Cubs' catcher- Carson Kelly-went went 4 for 4 with a homerun and 5 runs batted in. He is a notoriously weak hitter (.226 career batting average in over 1600 career at bats). The A's pitched their reserve catcher in the 9th and he did better than their real pitchers, even struck a guy out (although that was a Cubs relief pitcher batting for some weird reason). The people who paid $200 for "Senate" seats (normally $30-ish for River Cats games) or over $70 to sit on the wet grass certainly were pranked !

This was a great April Fools joke. The article seemed so authentic and well written. Sounded just like the kind of statements the universities would make. You got my wife and I good. Our jaws dropped nearly to the floor as I read the article to her. Good one, man!

West Sac As opener: spectacular view of Tower Bridge and downtown. Easy in - out. Budget regular hot dog $7. Sweet grass berms.

Also $14 / $17 beers, restrictive no-beer-in parking lot (no tailgating?), no outside food allowed in, beyond peanuts. Opening singer not-prime-time?

People are getting swindled at the new A's games, moreso than fans at any other MLB ballpark. You get all of the same things at a River Cats game (not the food or beer) for a fraction of the price. And people say, "I can see stars like Aaron Judge now" BFD, you can see stars when they're in college or the minors. And if they wanted to see Judge so badly they could've just seen him play against the A's in Oakland. Looking back, it would've been cheaper to see him there than in Sutter Health Park if you consider the savings on gas only partially offsets the increase in ticket prices. Early April Fools prank on Sacramento.

Haha $450m? That didn’t give it away? lol. Davis has a concept of a 20 year old plan and Sac has a scratcher from the local Indian casino that might win half a stadium if they scratch 3 green feathers.

If you wanted to add 10,000 seats and 5 - 10 luxury suites at our stadium, where would you put them? Student-side second deck?

It seems an expansion on the home side gets complicated by the press box / Edward's Clubhouse, especially if we keep the popular grass end zones.

Northwestern is building the $850 million Ryan Field which seats just 35,000 - privately funded by the Ryan family.

I think Student side-second deck - or a combo of building out the N end zone and behind the student zone east.

I think you are correct in what would be the easiest and least expensive build, but man, an upper deck on the east side might as well be called the broiler pan section for early season games. An upper deck and skyboxes on the west side would be more valuable seats but I don’t know how that would work without rebuilding the press box.

Maybe the rebuild makes most sense.

Turn the press boxes into luxury seating and build the press box above it, maybe?

The heat in the stadium is a major problem for the early season games. I don't know what the best solution to this problem is if there is one but east side is a oven on hot days and, even when they schedule games in the early evening, the sun is directly in the eyes of the fans on the east side. You see fans seeking out even tiny bit of shade they can find in the grass areas on hot evenings also.

The only solution that I can see is for games scheduled in late August through early October is later starts. 7 pm games would be inconvenient for some fans but at least it would be more tolerable than getting fried and safer for the players as well. Many Aggie fans will simply not show up if they know it's going to be unbearably hot in the stadium.

I could see them adding a larger 2nd deck ~7k on the east side of UCD Health stadium, then adding a smaller 2nd deck/luxury section of ~2.5k seats with a lounge/food area and luxury boxes/press box above that on west side. Then they will fill one end zone(north) with seats and leave the south with grass. This will give capacity around 22k and they can add seats to other endzone in future if necessary. I see a total build out of being closer to 25-27k. Our own AD mentioned that the previous 30k was the old number so I doubt we will do that especially since there is no min capacity anymore.
The luxury section and boxes is what will bring in $
I can also dream of them putting a canvas partial roof for shade but I doubt that.
