Nicholson appears to be going with a full 40 man roster for the last season he likely will be able to have that many. I believe the max roster size will be 34 starting in 2025-26.
Looks like a very deep and experienced roster. They are returning 23 players who actually played last year and 4 redshirts. One of the redshirts is outfielder Ethan Kang, who played well as a freshman in 2023.
On the other side of things they have 13 players new to the team, 11 of them freshmen. The transfers
are LHP Jack Meek and utility player Korey Williams, whom I've seen play a few times. Williams is a gòod hitter, think it was third base I saw him play. He transfers from Cosumnes River College, same community college as J.D. Mico. Meek made two appearances for Cal State Fullerton in 2023 per their website. He then pitched mostly as a starter for Santa Ana JC in 2024.
They lost 13 players from the 2024 team (8 of them seniors), but only 6 saw a lot of playing time at UCD, with Damian Stone being the only 2024 regular starter they lost. Stone's bat and baserunning will be tough to replace, but they still return most of their offense. On the pitching side they return all their starting pitchers. They did lose 9 relief pitchers, but a few of them barely pitched at all in 2024.
Some interesting new names on the roster. Houston (infielder) and Holden (outfielder) Hirschkorn played for Kingsburg HS.. They definitely have baseball pedigree, as their father is the veteran (18 seasons) head coach of Division II Fresno Pacific. Oscar Hirschkorn was a big pitcher on Chico State's D-II national title team in 1997 according to his Fresno Pacific bio.
Bryson Schelp, a RHP from Davis HS, has joined the team. Maxpreps.com shows him only pitching in one game in 2024. Hopefully he's not battling an injury currently.
The biggest surprise for me was seeing Aggie QB Caden Pinnick's on the roster because I didn't know he played baseball. The stats Maxpreps.com shows for his Del Oro baseball career, especially that .160 career batting average- are not very flattering. I think those are probably misleading thouģh, considering he was dividing his time between at least 3 sports in 4 years.
Despite only hitting .194 as a senior he did steal six bases in about 20 games, so there is at least decent speed. That he was a very good basketball player backs that up. Also, as a Division I quarterback recruit he needed to have a strong and accurate throwing arm. These skills are all transferable to playing good defense in the outfield.
