With a $400 million new stadium debt and a $22 million yearly operating deficit you would think that the people in charge would act decisively to remedy this unsustainable problem, but that is not happening at Berkeley. A blue ribbon panel has now concluded that the obvious choices to cut the deficit would be to cut some teams from the 30 that cal now fields is not possible because of two main problems: philanthropy and title IX. Now you would think that cutting men's crew, gymnastics and rugby (all expensive and non-revenue generating sports) and woman's beach volleyball would be an easy first step. Not so. It seems that the alumni from those sports are the most generous givers to the entire sports program. So the can gets kicked down the road again. This may seem like schadenfreude, but not entirely. If Cal cant control its debt, UCOP will have to fund it from other sources and that means other campuses will be on the hook. Not fair but UCOP will not let Berkeley suffer for its own lame management. I hope Dr. Blue is watching closely.
Wasn't Teresa Gould part of the executive management team thay helped bury the Bears under this mountain of debt?
How about cut 8 or 10 teams. Trim the FB and BB budgets. Anything you do, that's a massive number.
They could hire a succession of lowly paid coaches for FB and BB to give them a shot, and if they win they move on. Problem is if they lose, revenues plummet.
They rebuilt a landmark, and built a new Oregon type training facility. Too much, very risky. And Barbour landed another sweet gig.
