Now here's an Aggie baseball name I haven't heard or seen in a long time. Like Joe Biagini he was a pitcher who played under Rex Peters but pitched very little. Unlike Biagini he didn't play in the pros.
This promotion just goes to show that Aggie baseball players have paths to MLB even if they're not the best at playing.
General manager is primarily an analytical job that requires evaluating and acquiring baseball talent. On-field coaching roles have become dominated by analytics these days too. It used to be teams had a single hire each for hitting and pitching coach, and these were seasoned and accomplished MLB veterans. Now teams have three of each and many of these coaches have little to no experience even in the minors. Former Aggie David Popkins is on his secoond MLB hitting coach gig and he never played above Double-A.
According to thebaseballcube.com Ross only played in 2006. He appeared in 4 games, completed 5 1/3 innings, striking out 3 and walking 11. His carerr ERA was 18.56. To be fair, BaseballCube shows the Aggie pitching staff went 18-34 with a 5.82 ERA that season. Bar wasn't that high.
Another Aggie…Dan Feinstein is the Assitant GM with the A’s. Oversees the international scouting side amongst other responsibilities. Tried out for the Ags in the early 90’s but did not make the cut. Great guy.
I didn't know about Dan Feinstein. If they ever make a Moneyball 2 maybe Jonah Hill can play him too lol.
Sig Mejdal is another Aggie who holds the assistant GM position-with the Orioles. Used to work for NASA but ccording to Wikipedia he never even played above little league. The common thread here seems to be that if you want to be a baseball GM or AGM you can't be a great college or pro player.
Were you referring to Buster Posey ? He's the president of baseball operations- GM reports to him. The Giants' new GM Zack Minasian has even less playing experience than Fenstermaker. Apparently he had a pretty tough PT HS job working odd hours in the clubhouses for the Rangers. He probably didn't play in HS + definitely didn't play in college.
