Excerpts from an CNN opinion piece about the future of college football:

On Monday night, college football as we know it will end. After Michigan plays Washington in the College Football Playoff Championship Game in Houston, the sport will fundamentally reconstruct itself.

Washington, UCLA, USC and Oregon will join the Big Ten; Oklahoma and Texas will join the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams, while the Pac-12, a conference that originated in 1915, just three years after Arizona became a state, will wither and die.

This is the end. And it is also, of course, just the start.

The article goes on to discuss the following points:

    1. "TV executives are now the new commissioners and now run everything."
    2. "The death of conferences is only the beginning."
    3. "Little schools will be banished to the minor leagues..."
    4. "The college football video game is going to change everything."
    5. "The sport has reached its end-stage-capitalism period."
    6. "In the end, only the Pop-Tart will endure."

End stage capitalism is when “everything is about the money” and it sure seems that FBS college football has now reached this point. But what about FCS? Can it last by being the minor, minor league developmental player factory for the minor league to the NFL which is the FBS? We lost Jordan Perryman to the portal couple of years back and he now starts for Washington. We are fortunate we haven’t lost more. LL and TT are truly outliers by not going the portal route this year. We won’t be so lucky in the future IMHO. What’s the point? Recruit a star player and watch him vanish into the portal like perryman? Truly a sad state of affairs.

and Perryman didn’t make it to the NFL. Seems like many kids think they will end up there (NFL) and can only improve their chances by “portaling up”. If you are good the NFL will find you in FCS, e.g., South Dakota State tight ends.
