Is it the most desirable location? No, but the $1 million salary and big step up in competition make it a little more bearable. Plus, if you are a chili aficionado you found the promised land.
New Mexico thinks big when it comes to basketball. Looking at coaches from Indiana, Nebraska....They lured Alford away from Iowa, (though at that point I don't think it took much for him to go.) Hard to think they would look at the Big West.
It seems that Irvine HC, Russell Turner, gets his name tossed around quite a bit in the coaching, post-season merry-go-round. Some folks on the Big West Forums have speculated that he has interest from Akron, New Mexico and Florida Gulf Coast. Akron is a million dollar job.
This whole coaching carousel seems to be a game where schools and coaches are all willing participants. The coach at Florida Gulf Coast seems to have his name in every opening in the country, but says he is happy there and not looking elsewhere. Coaches deny any interest in an opening and the next thing you know they are hiring assistants at the new job.
It just depends on the coach. Some do it for leverage (which honestly isn't a bad thing if you win - I mean wouldn't you do that too esp if not your alma mater)? Then there are other coaches like Randy Bennett (St Marys) or Mark Few (Gonzaga) who are happy where they are. Tedford when he was the Cal coach in football was content in Berkeley (before the team started to slip with the academic problems).
Third, some coaches always have an eye on the next best thing and move often (like Nick Saban or Urban Meyer before they became settled in).
