This year MLB tried out some new rules to keep things going with COVID-19, like the universal DH and the runner on second base to start extra innings. College baseball will be played in 2021, whether UCD is a part of it or not. Some schools like Fullerton-that's their sport. They don't have football or NCAA tournament-caliber basketball teams. The good thing is that teams that do play will have the benefit of knowing what kinds of problems MLB encountered and + how they got around them.

Pandemic aside, these are changes I'd like to see going forward to the college game only.

No extra innings games (except in the playoffs)-at the end of 9 it goes down as a tie. If the standings come down to ties you can use head to head records or some kind of point system to determine the winner .Baseball doesn't have a clock, but student-athletes have only so much time to get their studying done. Extra innings are a drag for fans to watch, and the longer it drags on the colder it gets. The runner on 2nd rule would be a joke with the aluminum bats. What's more, super-long games tend to make for sloppy play the next time out. That 24-inning business against LMU this year exhausted the team, depleted their pitching staff, and they played like garbage in the Sunday doubleheader. It's not like you don't get your money's worth if you see a tie. It's a lot easier to stomach a tie than a loss.

No scheduled Sunday games-BYU makes it happen. There would be Saturday doubleheaders.
Sunday is usually a travel day. This would help ensure teams make their flights. If a game needs to be made up it can be played at 9 Sunday morning with a set drop dead time. Softball teams in tournaments can do it-why couldn't baseball teams ?

The minimum 3 batter rule for pitchers from MLB. I swear Vaughn must lead the Big West in pitching changes after 1 total batter faced. 1 walk and that's it. Makes the game drag. Beyond that how's a kid going to learn how to deal with adversity on the mound if the coach pulls him the second there's trouble ? If the pitcher stinks and gives up some runs, hey he gets a learning experience and so does the coach. The wins and losses are secondary to the educational experience. Some of us on here, myself included, are a bit too invested in the outcomes of these sporting events much of the time. They don't play the games for us, they just let us watch for the price of a ticket

Adopting something similar to the pitch limits used in the World Baseball Classic. Not a set limit for the game, but rather a mandate that if you exceed a certain amount for starters or relievers that you must not appear in a set number of games. Say you throw 40 pitches in relief on Friday-you can't pitch again until Sunday. Coaches have access to box scores-they can call this B.S. You throw 90 pitches or more as a starter-you can't pitch until your next start in no less than a week's time. You throw 30 pitches Friday you can pitch Saturday but not Sunday. No more bringing your ace starter to close out Tuesday games. Hopefully this would help minimize the abuse the arms of favorite pitchers take and force coaches to use more of their pitchers

You must start at least two different catchers in a doubleheader or any series lasting more than 2 games. The same catcher can appear in each game but only as a late game defensive replacement or at a different position to qualify. This is about minimizing the wear and tear and providing opportunities for more players. I keep thinking of Logan Denholm with 18 inning-days behind the plate...ouch !

Rosters-each team must provide a list of 25-26 players prior to each game (and they can make changes between games of a DH) that will potentially play. This will keep teams that use more of their allotted spaces from exploiting that advantage during games. Visiting teams typically don't bring their enitire unit with them, so they are at a disadvantage.

Mid-week games should be reduced for UCD. Getting pummeled by Sac State on Tuesday usually doesn't lead to wins on the weekend. If anything it reduces the pool of available pitchers. Mid-week games create this loop of pitcher inavailability. There should be no mid-week games in consecutive weeks, no more than 1 per week, and no more than 4 total games per week.
Travel should also be limited for mid-week games. Place a limit of say 150 miles traveled 1 way for the visitors.

Players who are injured or are otherwise not going to play in a game must not be in the dugout. They can sit in the stands or go home, depending on what the coach wants. This is to keep a bucket of baseballs in the dugout so staffers don't run down the aisle and block fans' view every inning. During COVID-19 players not in the game but made available as substitutes can sit in the stands. Everyone else goes back to the dorm/hotel/bus. I am assuming fans will not be admitted at UCD games in 2021... tough to imagine COVID-19 will be under enough control by mid-Feb that the usual contingent of 200 fans will be allowed to attend. At least it will take the home field advantage away from visiting teams to Davis.

Does anyone else have suggestions for college baseball rule changes ?

The final things I wanted to add:

MLB players mostly do not have classes to contend with, so they can play as late as they want.

College teams do not have the ability to go the minor leagues to get replacement players when they have players who are exhausted or injured. It is for that reason that the existing students' well-being needs to be better addressed with any rule changes.

The last rule change I would make involves games where weather or darkness forces the stoppage of play.for more than 30 minutes. If it is already an official game (5 ifull nnings have been played or 4 1/2 with the home team leading)and it is not tied then the game is over. No continuation the next day.
