• MBB Big West Conference Tounament March 14-16
I haven't been keeping up super closely but apparently there's been a swath of upsets in conference tournaments. The field should be bottom-heavy which bodes well for Irvine getting a decent seed if they get things done tonight.

The ESPN commentators would tell you that it was just a matter of stepping up the intensity. They argued that there wasn't much technically wrong with what the Ags were doing; they just weren't playing with enough energy to challenge Hawaii.

Also, it looked to me that shots just started dropping for the Ags, while they also were reducing the amount of easy looks for Hawaii's shooters. I don't think that explains all of it though

As an SDSU guy, I did the opposite. Congrats to USU though, they looked really good out there

Down by 14 at the half. What the heck.

Hawaii's doing better against us than they did against UCR

Down 12. Gross calls timeout. Yikes.

Isn't the offensive board comparison biased by how much better the Ags were shooting than UCI? I would guess that there were fewer -- and maybe far fewer -- balls to rebound in the first place

Conference wins in the tournament = more revenue and better exposure for the conference. I'm hoping Irvine makes it because they're the BWC's best chance of getting past the first round

Destruction. This Aggie team wants the tournament badly.
  • Aggie Softball Pitcher Throws a Perfect Game Against Sac State
Incredible. Does 18-4 make this the best softball season in a while? I remember them struggling when I was a student.

A renovated stadium and promise of a new athletics center two blocks away probably helps a bit with recruiting.

It's puzzling because WBB uses byes and the system apparently works just fine. The conference has a model for how to implement byes right in front of it. Does it have to do with availability of the Honda Center? Unwillingness of ESPN/Fox to pick up the earliest games on TV?

Seems that any system that would work for the women would also work for the men, and possibly at a greater profit margin.

EDIT: I see you commented nearly the same thing on the WBB thread, whoops

I'm not disagreeing, maybe I should flesh out what I mean a little more. I think of the "profile" of the sports at Davis in popularity tiers with MBB and Football getting the most recognition and WBB at a slightly higher level of popularity than baseball and soccer. Totally agree that WBB is the first one of all those I just mentioned to build a consistently successful program.

I just also wanted to acknowledge some of the less recognizable sports for figuring out how to compete at the D1 level.
  • Goodbye Freeborn Hall
Can't recall seeing it; probably no
  • WBB: How far can the Aggie women go?
The tape must be harrowing. Double team Morgan inside? Well now the best PG in the conference is going to start firing away from three. Somehow shut Kourtney down? Good luck with that, because there's a genetically identical copy of her on the floor too.

Remodel doesn't feel like a terribly big change tbh, based on the few times I've gone through it. The obvious change is just a new lounge area on the bus terminal-facing side, with a new entrance to the bookstore. All positive changes, but nothing that felt earth-shattering.

I went into the new games area over a year ago but don't remember much of it.

Not in a high-profile spectator sport, to be sure. I think Water Polo, Golf etc would argue that they've had similar levels of success.

But WBB is at least on the soccer/baseball tier of exposure -- if not closer to the MBB/football tier -- and this probably is a first.
  • Foreign Tennis Player Issues
I suppose there's an argument that a court could rule that the intent of Title IX (in regards to athletics) was to protect women in America by effectively reserving sports on US collegiate sports teams for them; therefore, international players taking those slots is a violation of legislative intent.

I doubt anybody's ever going to put limits based on citizenship status or birthplace -- because those are politically charged and have the potential to limit folks who've been in the US a long time -- but I could see some sort of NCAA rules about limiting nonresident students (like how public schools already calculate tuition) or requiring some percentage of teams to attend US high schools.

But since I'm not in touch with what the national data is like, I have no idea if this is a good idea or not.

Not too worried about the fourth. Trying to avoid injuries while burning down the clock and playing with the lineups isn't really conducive to keeping up the scoring.

Surprised to see that Morgan's stat line was that bad though. She didn't look "off" today, maybe that was because she kept getting to the line
