  • Senior Carpool Karaoke
    (Y) It would be great if both MBB and WBB did this each year and make it a senior tradition. I think it could be used as a good recruiting tool also because it shows the great relationships the players have developed and how at ease they are with their coach. Coach Les is laser focused and very competitive when the game starts so it's nice to see another side of him. He's clearly having a lot of fun. There are a lot of D1 coaches out there who would not be comfortable driving around town rapping with his players and having a blast.
  • Senior Carpool Karaoke
Haha...what a fun video! The thing that impresses me the most is seeing just how tight a group these seniors are with each other and their coach. A solid basketball foundation has be laid over the past few years with Coach Les at the helm. All the players to come have some broad shoulders to stand on and take the program to even higher levels of success.

Bruce Gallaudet wrote a good article about the new Aggie basketball recruits we have signed. All of the new players are high character individuals. Some of the recurring themes about why they chose to come to Davis are the coach, the school and the great basketball culture that has been established.

I like the fact that the coaching staff is making offers to players who are getting FBS attention. UCD has a lot to offer and we just might land a couple of these players. If we don't offer there is no chance whatsoever. I think it also shows the confidence that Hawkins and his staff have in what we have to offer and where we are going. They're setting the bar high and some of these athletes might realize that they can get an outstanding education and a lot of playing time at Davis and, if they perform very well, it's is not out of the question that they could make it to the next level. Heck, we had guys do that when we were D2 so why not now?
  • Brynton Lemar Video
This is a well written article about Brynton's journey that really illustrates the the values and life lessons that college athletes can learn when they are a part of a program that is built on a foundation of integrity and togetherness.

Brynton Lemar is a fantastic young man and it's been a pleasure to have been able to watch grow during his career at UCD.
  • Bright Future Ahead for the Aggie Women
I bet Morgan is eyeballing the 6 foot mark and, with a couple more years of jumping, she just might go higher. The 6'10" world record by a 5'11" tall athlete is truly amazing.

Not to disparage the world record holder but, considering the amount of illegal drug use by the Eastern European countries and, in particularly, Russia, in recent years, it makes me wonder if there was any reliable testing back in 1987? It's a real shame that there has been so much doping in the olympic sports and in professional sports of all kinds.
  • Bright Future Ahead for the Aggie Women
Morgan Bertsch showed how athletically talented she is as she just broke the school record in the high jump by clearing 5'10". Morgan gets a late start to the track and field season due to the length of the women's basketball season but that doesn't seem to slow her down.

Congrats to Morgan on her record jump!

Stefan Gonzalez shot 51.7% from 3 in high school and 48% while he was at St. Mary's. As per D1 transfer rules he must sit out next season before joining the Aggies with 2 years of eligibility left.

  • Mikey Henn is transferring
Mikey Henn will be transferring to Cal Baptist. The Lancers are an up and coming DII program located in Riverside, CA, and play in the PacWest Conference. They have a very young roster, are coming off a 26-5 season and have transfers coming in from Portland and Santa Clara this year also. It has been rumored that they are interested in moving to D1 at some point and that they have interest in the Big West but the Big West has not shown any recent interest in expanding.

I expect that he will do very well at Cal Baptist and wish him good luck. Aggie fans are sorry to see him go.

I think Gonzalez is a great addition for the Aggies. I know that Les tends to be guard heavy but Gonzalez appears to have the ability to be a proficient and prolific shooter. I remember Coach Les saying that something he learned from Kansas coach, Bill Self, was to never let your team become "guard poor." That said, I'd like to see us bring in a big, strong PF or C that will be able to fill the shoes of Chima after next year.
  • MBB 2017 Recruits
He's very agile for being 6'9 - 6'10 and moves his feet well on defense. He can also drive the ball to the hoop which is impressive for a player his size. I think Coach Les probably likes is ability to defend since he emphasizes defense first and foremost.

From a discussion about Russell on the Portland Pilots forum it seems that the Aggies recruited Russell out of high school as a preferred walk-on but he went to Portland on a scholarship. Then, after very limited minutes in his freshman year, it appears that the Portland coach decided that Russell no longer fit into his plans so Russell left for Casper College. He recently visited NAU and was offered and also made a visit to Hawaii before visiting UCD.

He looks to be quite agile for 6'9 and has nice post moves in the paint and is versatile with either hand. None of his highlights show him scoring from anywhere but in the paint though. On the down side, his FT shooting leaves a lot to be desired and, given that Garrison Goode is also poor from the line, the pair of them on the floor at the same time could leave a lot of points at the FT line.

I think that Mikey Henn is a significant loss for the Aggies. He's was big body with a good inside/outside game and he was a hard worker who wasn't afraid to mix it up inside. Hopefully, with two years of college basketball experience under his belt, Russell will come in as a mature player ready to give us some needed help in the paint and on the boards with Henn and Hewitt both leaving.
