  • 2023-24 Big West MBB Scores Thread
Hawai`i played a very early game against St. Mary's on Oct. 20 and I had no idea it was on. The Gaels pounded UH 92-58, which was a bit surprising since it was in Honolulu and the Rainbow Warriors return 4 starters including their leading scorer, Noel Coleman, and leading rebounder, Bernardo da Silva. Oddly, they don't play again until next Tuesday.

That basket by TY reminded me of the UCLA tournament victory over Missouri when Missouri went up by one with 5 seconds left and UCLA's Tyus Edney drove the floor to score with less than second left.

Good to see TY be aggressive without fouling. He and Pepper had 2/3 of the Aggie's points. Best backcourt in the Big West. While Milling looked confident in the one trey he made, he only shot one more. He needs to look for his shot more. As it was, UCD only tried 9 3-pointers. As much as I like Bob Williams, he was off base in suggesting they needed 10 made 3s to win. On the other hand, he was spot on in predicting that the young Waves would cave under pressure and we did see a Wave cave.

47 fouls called so far. Refs calling things way too close.

Great comment by Bob Williams about how the Ags used triggers to switch from zone to man in the middle of Wave possession. I have never even heard of that before but it makes great sense to confuse the offense. I wonder if that's a recent innovation?

Coach Les must have peeled the paint at halftime. Ags are playing with more focus now.

Did they say why Borra is out?

Milling and Johnson have combined for an eye-popping 2 points through the first 16 minutes.

Poor shooting + weak defense = 9 point deficit.

UC Davis is favored by 7.5 points.
  • Bob Hamilton Court?

Based on what Scott Marsh said at the broadcast of the Wm. Jessop game, the woman in the photo with the whole team is Bob Hamilton's daughter and the man next to her and Jim Les is her husband. In all those games I went to seeing Coach Hamilton chewing on his towel, I never dreamt he would rise to such legendary status. The handful of players I knew didn't speak of him with much awe or admiration, but then, he pushed them pretty hard.

Thanks, AggieFinn. SLAC is no less original than what I remember: "Suck State."

In my day, we called the Hornets a lot of things, but I missed whatever post it was when Sac State was being identified as SLAC. What does SLAC stand for?
  • MBB: William Jessop (2-1) @ the Aggies (0-0) 6 pm Monday, 11/06
I need to apologize to William Jessop for misspelling them as "William Jessup" for this entire thread. Having said that, I think this team might be better than expected due to the development of DeBruhl, Borra and Adebayo that was evident yesterday. If Milling can start hitting his jumpers and TY can settle down a bit, this team can make a lot of noise in the Big West.

Academy of Art is an NCAA Div. 2 team in the Pac-West Conference. They should be a step up from Williem Jessup who is in the Golden State Athletic Conference which is NAIA. I think I heard Bob Williams say that Jessup is going to move to Division 2 next year.

Pepper is 3/6 from 3. The rest of the team is 0/7. At least they've forced 19 turnovers (but have given up 12). We need to expect this kind of game early in the season, but the fact that TY got 3 earl fouls continues a problem he had last year.

Jessup has an advantage in having played twice already while the Ags are still sanding off the rust and it shows early on.

I think we have played this team several times before. Have we ever lost or even come close to losing? In 2020 we defeated them 95-62.

I hope you're right. I know that Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp and even way back to Walter Payton and Jerry Rice were FCS, but it takes not only exceptional talent but a willingness on the part of NFL scouts to look at you. The knock is often that they have not played against high caliber opposition. In the case of the PSU kicker, his stats tell the story and the opposition is not a factor.

The receivers have made a lot of great clutch catches the whole game.
