• Aggies have a new Defensive Coordinator???
Which probably explains why Hawk was most excited about landing that 330 pound nose tackle out of Vallejo. I do not believe we have ever has such a large player who is also quick and very good.
  • WBB: Nina looks to be out for the season
I hope she gets the waiver, but its not really clear if she can get it. Obviously its a season ending injury and its only the first half of the sean (two of the requirements) but she also must not have played in moe than 30% of the games this season or 3 games whichever is more. The last requirement is a very close call as far as I can see, as she has played in a lot of games this year. I certainly hopes that she qualifies and comes back next year.
  • Aggies have a new Defensive Coordinator???
I must agree with DrMike. Tucker and Hawk go way way back. Not like Hawk to toss old friends under the bus. The “UC Davis source” sounds vague to me. We will seee. I think Tuckers done a good job.
  • MBB: UC Riverside (10-6, 0-0) at UCD (6-10, 0-0) 7 pm Thursday 1/09
Bad day in Black Rock. Both teams off their game big time. I think things will get better or I hope they will!!
  • Lighting up Dobbins and WSB
No doubt this is why AD Blue is “on this” now. UCD cant afford to be the last one standing without lights.

IMHO its by design. Most Midwest and East schools need a presence on the West Coast for, among other reasons, recruiting and I don't just mean athletics. Recruiting students. Many Midwest and Eastern universities are suffering from declining enrollment. Not the UCs and California has a very big population and many very good kids cant get into a UC. They are ripe for out of state recruitment. Why does Harvard schedule games in SD? Recruitment and presence. So, I think Les has the “Band of Brothers” philosophy and travels games with all that adversity tends to bond the team into a cohesive unit of friends.Others have said that here, but I just agree with that. Plus, very poor student attendance for the end of Fall Quarter is a given. Again IMHO.. . . No insider info.
  • MBB: Aggies (5-8) at San Francisco (9-3) 2 pm Saturday 12/21
Good point on Harris and Murphy. I was going on the stats sheet, not the roster sheet. Movie very good points and I agree. I know we have come a long way since 1983, but I was in NY state when Kenny O’Brian was drafted and read the Times sports headline and on the draft news as well: “Ken Who From Cal Where?” Is seared into my mind. I was so mad I could spit and I did. I said I’ve seen him play and he is good. I was in an upstate bar and had to get outta there pronto or I was going to get really f. . . .ed Up by about 20 drunk and very angry up-staters. So, maybe I still have a bit of an sensitivity problem about our sports stature?
So I say lets go to another topic that I used to really enjoy. The UC Davis Dance Team! I have not been to a game in five years and the BW TV usually cuts out the halftime shows that I have seen. How are they now? They used to be world class or I should say, one of the best teams in the country at any level.
  • MBB: Aggies (5-8) at San Francisco (9-3) 2 pm Saturday 12/21
I don't know movie. For all the BW schools except CP, the MBB coach is THE biggest coach on campus. This is not the case for us or CP. plus, the BW is a very SoCal oriented conference and that is where the bulk of the California talent is also. So for some kids the “where the hell is Davis (SLO)” factor may be an issue in recruiting. I think that might be why we and CP seem to struggle in MBB. But I must say that over Les’s time we have done much better than CP in MBB. But yes, .466/.508 is not a great record.

So going into conference play I don't see Les RSing anyone now. Only Ba has not played in 4 games. On the woman’s side, again it looks clear that Gross will RS Jones and Lily this season. And what a difference in trends for the two teams. Gross is obviously going big for the future and will have one of the tallest teams on the coast next year. Les on the other hand is going smaller. As the USF coach alluded to, that small team approach can work, but only for awhile against good teams like USF. I wonder sometimes if Les is so wrapped up in his successful years as a guard and great 3 shooter, that he overlooks the value of bigs. Please note the word “wonder” because he is a smart guy, maybe we just cannot recruit bigs as most mid majors cannot do either. This is in no way a criticism of Les. He is a great coach IMHO.

Chico QB not bad either. Did he get signed anywhere?
  • 2020 Recruiting List
I agree with CA. Del Real appears to be the real deal. Pun intended. Really surprised we landed this kid. Although I will say that I think Noa Masui is the biggest catch of this year. His size reminds me a lot of Mike Wise when he came in as a Freshman at 6’6 220 and left at 6’8” and 40# heavier four years later. If he is as fast as Wise. . . . Well we can all hope, but that would be great for the program.
  • NCAA's 150 Greatest Coaches
Oh well, must be his pistol; and I must say thats a gotcha on me. But he was not on the list that you posted. How are we supposed to know whose on a list that is not completely posted? Sorry. Too defensive (quote be wife!!) . Still caught up in a 1977 game of football. . .
  • NCAA's 150 Greatest Coaches
The 1977 game with highly favored Nevada is still in my mind the most memorable win in Aggie history. Toomey was packed. Nevada fans in their RVs were everywhere and confident; but, the Aggies won decisively. Coach Ault was anything but a great sportsmanship coach on that afternoon; he was a very poor loser and was not even trying to hide it. Apparently he was never a good loser. I would say that is why he is not on that list.

The guy who throws without the laces?
  • Playoffs
I’ve been to see a sac game on a rainy, windy day. Not a fun experience. Bad enough to be high up on those open shaky bleachers, but when the wind comes up the rain can come up through the bleacher seats as well and there’s no way to protect yourself from it. 10 times worse than Toomey was in the rain. But good season for sac. And next year they have Thompson back for what the 7th year? Amazing!
  • WBB: Aggies (3-5) at Northern Arizona (2-4) 11 am PT Sunday 11/8
At some point do teams have to declare who they are redshirting? To my knowledge we have not, but Jones and Lily have not seen any action that I am aware of. Without them on the floor, I don't see how we can stack up well against these next 3 teams who are very big and physical. We also need to work on dealing with the full court press better. Last year we had no fear of the press and beat it regularly. This year not so much. Trpcic is a good ball handler but we are just seem not quick enough yet to deal with it well at this point. But overall, a very good effort at NAU. The team is improving very quickly.
  • Expanding Stadium
So on the issue of lack of student attendance at football games at UC Davis; I simply offer this very funny family observation regarding Michigan vs. Ohio State yesterday. My BIL is a Michigan grad and major fan. Mid fifties and school teacher in Marin. He has the Big Ten thing going all weekend, but when the Michigan game comes on: he yells-“Silence Please- NO speaking or noise!” But that does not apply to him. It’s all “S—t, F—k, mother———....” bull——“. SIL goes out side with the dogs until the whole thing is over, BIL has not spoken a word since yesterday. Very upset and depressed with the Ohio win. We will never have fans like in the Midwest and I think thats a good thing. BIL must speak tomorrow at work. So very hard for him. . . .
  • Expanding Stadium
There was a thread awhile back that mentioned the BS was not happy with its decision to allow UCD and Poly into the conference for football. The BS is just darn big, too many teams, difficult travel etc.so is there a chance Poly and us get the boot from the BS at some point? If so where do we go? Who would want us? The stadium at that point would be an issue we’d have to address. Until then no need for expansion, but yes, minor upgrades and improvements will continue.

Looks like both Jones and Lily are going to RS. Danish gal sits for the year. So its looks like next year will be a year for the bigs, especially if the Danish gal is as good as she is billed to be.
