All could be well soon. We will hire for fund raising the Fresno wrestling coach who just got booted for, among other things, allowed a stripper into a party for recruits, loaned money to a player for “parking tickets” and a bunch more inane infractions. Now, we know Fresno State is not the role model for D1 sports or for any aspect of college sports, but this seems excessive for the NCAA to come down so hard on poor Fresno State just for a stripper party? At least it was a safe party, right? Last I went to a game there the guys in front of me had just been released from prison. We got the big biker glare when they found out we were not Bulldog fans. Not a fun experience. But, hey, a few strippers, a few donors, and we get the lights, right? Rocko, get creative! But, we have to hire local. Can we get local strippers in Davis? Doubtful. I have to go to Home Depot tomorrow in Santa Rosa and the Hooters is right next door. I will ask if they travel. . . Meanwhile Fresno dropped more sports, Field Hockey, Men’s Tennis and Lacrosse. Thank God for Stanford!

Movie, I think you might be right. I recall someone saying the electrical conduits were put in place as constructed and just waiting for lights. That was 15-20 years ago. But, no. There Never was a big campaign to install lights. Then it was around $200,000. Now probably 2x that. But, still if the Administration really wanted it, it is a small piece of change for them.
What is the status on the present head BB coach’s contract?
And no. Beer will not help this program. I think football has beer, but you have to go out of the stadium to get it and drink it. God forbid beer in the hands of Aggie fans in the stadium. Very dangerous!

20172. How will we ever know until we try it? Not a lot to do around Davis at night that I remember and now no Grad. So $200,000. For lights seems like no big deal. UC Davis is the second largest employer in the entire Sacto region last I saw. UC Davis Health is a very Big factor in UC Davis Athletics now and it is growing very fast. How about a challenge campaign for THE LIGHTS? I would certainly donate, except no body has asked.

Well, maybe without the lights it looks like we don’t even care about BB. It looks like SB recruits well in the South, but then, its no secret that Davis is much safer than many/most SoCal towns and their moms and dads know this. Did I once say how many Davis grads come back to town to take their kids on the downtown trick-or-treat night. I know because could not a room in Davis on Halloween a few years ago. “Busiest night of the year” desk clerk told me. Says a lot.

Simple. Population: SoCal has 2/3’s of the population of California. Many, many more players available in SoCal. So, why can’t we just recruit down there? It takes time, money and effort. That last thing: “E” for effort is pretty much all on the coaching staff. Just don’t know if they are dong a good job or not. Rocko has a big job in front of him with Aggie BB.

UC Santa Barbara has lights. Are we the only UC team in the BWC w/o lights?
  • Cal Poly-Humboldt
But, they had a great football tradition. Beat us. When? DR. only D1 will get them there again. Hey when you go, you go BIG!
  • Cal Poly-Humboldt
Cal Poly cant be really excited about this. Maybe Humboldt goes D1 next? Great school. Cousin went there and had a great career with the forest service afterwards.

MTB. Your points are good, but they don’t address why Irvine is now pretty much dominating BWC sports and we are not doing as well; particularly BB. Irvine is just as hard to get into as Davis, yet they seem to do better. May just be the SoCal/Urban population advantage? I haven’t a clue. Maybe lights? Irvine does have lights, but Dobbins appears to be a better venue overall and has over twice the seated capacity. This might be 0ne of Rocko’s first challenges- upgrade Dobbins.
  • Long Beach drops prospector mascot
Hey, lets just move on with this. What Gunrock did or did not do is protected by HIIPA now and thats very good. Now its Gunrock, the horse versus Elbie, the shark. But Elbie is a very feminine name. Gunrock is a very masculine name. Now both non-binary? OK with me.
    Let’s get onto baseball! BAD. . . .
  • Long Beach drops prospector mascot
Elbie is a shark? I thought she was a SI swimsuit cover. What idiot thought that up? Not Universal Pictures for sure. Question: is Elbie a white shark, a black shark, a mixed race shark. Apparently, Elbie is non-binary, but does (it) identify as a he or a she? Hey, this stuff matters nowadays. No answers. No such problems with our “Gunrock.” He is a gay male horse who identifies as female and dresses in bright blue and is also speechless. But at least he/she has a family: think “Man-O-War”. How’s that for dropping on Elbie?

On another note. We were just swept by the “Sharks,” no, the 49ers, no, the Dirtbags, or Elbie. Who cares, we lost badly.

More importantly, it seems pretty obvious that Irvine is becoming the very dominant member of the BWC. dominating MBB, WBB (except for us), WVB, WP, BB, SB; it appears that Irvine is on a roll.
As to the LBS losses it was just another sweep by other BWC teams. We are dead last in BB. When were we ever that before? And going down and down over the last years.
I hear that our BB HC is revered and loved, but this has to be dealt with. Cut the sport? Not likely. New coach? Maybe a new name for BB?
  • Favor to ask
A view from afar. I second 72s comments. I am not a big BB fan, D1 or MLB. I did go to some games back in the day when the Aggies had some very good teams i n the D11 era. Then the old players and supporters built the stadium (which is still one of the best in the west, albeit, no lights). Big support from alums for thr Dobbins upgrade. No, I do not see BB being cut. UCD Administration wants to be on top of the BWC and the BSC and cutting athletics is not on it’s agenda. And, Stanfords recent decision to reverse cutting 11 sports will not be lost on Rocko Deluca. So, no BB cuts this year or ever. Better coaching, more money will save the day. Maybe, lights? Hot night in Davis: lets go see the Aggies!! Then the Grad- Oh, sorry misprint there........
  • Stanford cuts some sports
Maybe off subject a bit, but Kenedy Brown, 6’2” All-Freshman/All BWC pitcher 1st Team is probably the best pitcher in the BWC this year and maybe one of the best in all of California. But, is she safe from Oregon? Or anyone else? Is there a way for the public to see who is on the Portal? Is there any limit on poaching players by contacting them and quietly telling them to get on the portal so they can be accessed by the other team?

SLO. Intriguing. Again I say as I did with Blueforce: where is the actual evidence! Enough with the: “I heard from a coach. . . . And they said. . . “. All BS unless you can back it up with the facts.. sorry. Not a credible comment on an important issue.

I would like to believe Yu Blue, but I would like to see the actually numbers. Which is about as likely as me getting to see the nuclear codes.

And probably saved UCD/Cal field hockey as well.

Some think that the dramatic increase in applications to the UCs this year was due to the fact that UC suspended testing for Covid reasons. We will see if that takes place again after this announcement. I also wonder if this will have a negative effect on CSU applications as the line between UC and CSU qualifications gets diminished with this decision. Yes, I also think this will have a noticeable and positive effect on athletic recruitment at all the UCs.

River, you are very right. My son went to SF State recently. It is not a nowhere school at all as a university it is probably the best in the CSU system. I meant it in the sense of a major football program. Like on a CV. My son is doing very well with a SFS degree and that is all that counts for me.

Great quote! It all started with Jim Sochor; he was a smallish guy from a nowhere school. No head coaching experience that I know of. Who was the genius who hired him in the first place? That person deserves a lot of credit for this whole “Davis thing” and I have never heard the persons name. Does anyone know? Another thing I might add, is that Jim Sochor was an inspiration for many other Davis coaches besides football, including Bob Williams and Jennifer Gross. Fairly recently Jen Gross commented that very early in her career at Davis she was in a game at the Pav and her team was not doing well and she became very visibly upset with her team. Jim watched it all from his usual spot in end zone bleachers. Apparently after the game he approached Jen and commented about the scene of her being so upset with her team. We will never know what he said, but we can guess it was something along the line of: “that was not very cool, coach better”, etc. apparently she really got it; and look at her now! One of the best in the business and Jim played a part in that story as well..
