  • Sac State's bid for the Pac 12 Thread
Hard to imagine how a real journalist writes up that math without noting the obvious problems. They will get what, best case scenario, maybe $3 million in guarantee money per season? That will be largely eaten up by paying for their own travel and paying for opposing travel. So again, where is the $23 million coming from?

Is the Board of Trustees ever going to engage in any oversight here? They support all this?

So when is Wood going to have to put out any real details about where all this money is coming from?

Rocko just posted a statement. No particular details other than planning to build program at FCS level for now. https://www.facebook.com/ucdavisfootball/posts/pfbid0EAmParJBB2EJoURmKmqmzefCqRKW6pNBSxMW9M9N4JzjbaXpPhSsyiXZu9yVdfMXl

If NDSU is indeed paying $17 million on top of all the investment needed to upgrade the program to compete, I assume it wasn’t really a live question for us. We can’t do that now.

Has there been any reporting on this situation vis-a-vis us? Is it generally understood that we declined this time?
  • Sac State's bid for the Pac 12 Thread
Led by a non-traditionalist president intent on competing in major college football, the university’s athletic department has made significant investments for athletic promotion, even erecting billboards in an attempt last year for an invitation into the new-look Pac-12.

Renovations are planned for its football stadium to reach FBS standards and plans for a new stadium have been in the works. The university last year hired as its men’s basketball coach Mike Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran, and announced Shaquille O’Neal as the program’s voluntary general manager.

Yes they have plans - one plan to rebuild Hornet Stadium immediately after the 2024 season (https://www.csus.edu/news/newsroom/stories/2024/9/new-stadium-announcement.html) and one plan to open a new stadium at Cal Expo for the 2026 season (https://www.csus.edu/news/newsroom/stories/2025/9/calexpo.html). How is construction coming along on those plans?

Sac State supposedly offering $10 mil plus forgoing media money for anyone to take them. Where is this money coming from? https://x.com/RossDellenger/status/2019843886999564740

If he's any good at WSU, he's not going to stay there either, just like his predecessors. It's just a stop.

If Deion wants Pinnick and can offer the most money, he should take it. Isn't that the point of this move? If he wanted a stable program at a better university where he can develop, win more games and compete for national titles, he could stay where he is.

I haven’t been in Davis but if the sun hasn’t emerged in recent days, it’s unlikely to today, regardless of what your phone says

Not to jinx anything, but what's the plan if we win tomorrow? Where are dorm-housed players going to stay?

I didn't think the Cal Expo plan was ever actually proposed for 2026 but I see in Sac's release:

President Luke Wood set a goal of opening the new stadium, with up to 25,000 seats, in time for the Fall 2026 football season. He said the project would be financed largely through revenue bonds.

    https://www.csus.edu/news/newsroom/stories/2025/9/calexpo.html

That "goal" seemed like quite a jump from entering into a formal agreement to explore the possibility of a stadium at the site. Like everything Wood says, worth ~0.
  • Coaching Carousel
Yeah somehow I doubt much research went into this line "Furthermore, there are few if any players he can bring from UC Davis that can make a Teddye Buchannan level impact on the program’s short term trajectory."
  • Coaching Carousel
Plough listed as marginal candidate here https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/cal-head-coaching-big-board-10

Why he would be an exciting hire
He was closely involved in maybe the best Cal offense of the Wilcox era, and maybe it’s not a coincidence that the offense took a schematic step back after he left?

Why he could be a risky hire
He never had a chance to do much as an HC. Sure he has brought UC Davis to the FCS playoffs in 2024 and 2025, but Davis is a perennial FCS playoff participant, so Plough can’t exactly take credit for building the program up. Before that, he was relieved of his duties as OC at Boise State due to poor offensive performance of the team… who shortly thereafter made the CFP. Furthermore, there are few if any players he can bring from UC Davis that can make a Teddye Buchannan level impact on the program’s short term trajectory.

Would he take the job if offered?
Tim Plough is something of a replacement level candidate. Cal can increase his salary by an order of magnitude AND he’s not going to get serious looks from anywhere else on Cal’s level, meaning that he’ll be there as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option.
