TV folks have to be cringing as the chances of a Celtics vs Lakers finals are rapidly going down the drain.
  • Dobbins Stadium thoughts
That UCLA loss is a stunner. They were the No. 2 seeded team in the NCAA tournament and hosted the regional. They lost to Grand Canyon and Liberty. Davis played in the Softball NIT, an 8 team invitational in Ft. Collins, CO. Not a great showing for the Big West as the two conference teams in the Invitational, Davis and Northridge, each went O-2, as did Fullerton and Long Beach State in the NCAAs.

Megan, er, Morgan*, signed to Sky opening day roster!

    https://ucdavisaggies.com/news/2023/5/18/womens-basketball-morgan-bertsch-named-to-chicago-sky-roster.aspx

    *EDIT:
My apologies to Morgan and my thanks to AggieFinn2. If that was the only mistake I made in a day, it would be a great day.

Go Morgan! Go Sky! Beat the Lynx!
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
Baseball score from Sac: CSUS 7, UCD 5.

This is the final competition between the schools this year.

Ags won the overall Causeway Cup this year with 55.85 points to the Hornets’ 34.18.

And throw in an early attempt at a playoff, the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS.
  • The UC Davis Football Draft/UDFA Thread
I would piggyback off of BaseballatDobbins' comment...and wonder, without any research, just what effect the transfer portal has had on FCS and HBCU athletes when it comes to the pro-draft. I read yesterday that only one HBCU player was drafted this year. It would be interesting to see if a meaningful number of players started in smaller programs, then tranferred to FBS programs and were subsequently drafted. In the past some of those would have been drafted straight out of their initial schools.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
Aggie track & field teams lost both sides of the Causeway Duals with the CSUS women winning by a score of 105-88 and the men by 95-77.

"Running" (HAR!) score for the coveted Causeway Cup is now UCD 55.85, CSUS 32.51.

The final Causeway event this athletic year is the last of three baseball games, scheduled for May 9 at Sacramento.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
CSUS defeated UCD in women's tennis this afternoon, 4-3, in a match in Sacramento. Current overall Causeway score is now UCD 55.85, CSUS 22.51.

Next event for both men and women is the Causeway Dual Meet in track & field. An earlier schedule had the meet at Sacramento on Saturday, April 29th, but now the schedules for both schools show the event on Friday, the 28th, at Davis.

After track & field there is the last of three baseball games, scheduled for May 9 at Sacramento. That will mark the end of another breathless Causeway Cup campaign.

As you have mentioned, Tuesday games are a whole different thing. Kind of like minor league ball. Winning a game is secondary to player development and whatever else coaches are doing to get the team or players ready for games that really count...conference games in college, "the Show" in professional ball.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
Men's tennis score from Sacramento: Ags 4, Hornets 1

Running Causeway score, assuming you include men's tennis, UCD 55.85, CSUS 17.51.

Next event is women's tennis at Sacramento this coming Friday.

AND, the UCD Causeway website has been updated to include the previously mentioned missing sports. There are some hiccups regarding a couple of events and a couple of scores as well as some arithmetic, but basically we are on the same page....

Meanwhile, Sac beat No. 9 Stanford yesterday, 15-13, in Stanford.
  • “New” FCS football conference
They had some sort of arrangement recently where one school from one of the conferences got an auto-bid, even though individually neither conference had the NCAA required minimum number of teams. This will give them a designated conference with the required number.

One thing I like about the WAC, and I guess the new hybrid, is it gives Big Sky teams some non-conference FCS, (did I get that right this time?) opponents.

The way the Pac-12 is looking right now, we may be talking about Cal moving to the Big West.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
UCD and CSUS have completed day three of the El Macero Classic and though there are still a few teams on the course, it appears UCD men's golf will finish 12th of 20 teams with a score of 872, while CSUS will finish 17th with 886 strokes.

That puts the Causeway Cup running score, ...at least if you count golf..., at UCD 50.85, CSUS 17.51.

Next scheduled event is men's tennis this coming Wednesday at Sacramento. The women's tennis teams will meet on Friday, also at Sacramento.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
UCD defeated CSUS in beach volleyball, 4-1, at a tournament at UOP. Depending on how anyone scores this thing, the running score is now UCD 45.85, CSUS 17.51.

The UCD Causeway Cup website has the running score at UCD 35.02, CSUS 14.17. The website has a total of 70 points at stake so UCD has won the Cup by that measure. Updating for baseball and beach volleyball that score should now be UCD 38.36, CSUS 14.17.

If you go out on a limb and include men's cross-country, men's tennis and both men's and women's golf, there are 90 points available and with 45.85 UCD has also won the Cup by that measure.

The men have finished day two of the three day El Macero Golf Classic. CSUS had been six strokes ahead of UCD after day one, but after two days UCD sits two strokes better than CSUS.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
With the baseball win (!!) I have the running score as UCD 44.18, CSUS 17.51.

Two events this weekend with men's golf competing at the El Macero Classic, Friday-Sunday, and beach volleyball at a tournament at UOP on Saturday.

The UCD Causeway Cup website does not list men's golf. (In fact it does not list golf at all, men's or women's.)

Men's tennis teams are schduled to meet on April 19th at Sac, but that is not listed on the UCD Causeway Cup website...
  • Minor sports are still important
Seems strange that UCD and Fresno State did not compete against each other in equestrian this season.
  • Causeway Cup (?) 2022-23
This is all a "fling the pasta against the wall and see what sticks" sort of scoring. The page on the UCD Athletic website still does not include men's cross country or women's golf. The gymnastics teams competed four times, but the page only includes three (though since the Ags swept the season, that really doesn't matter.)

There are random 1/100ths of points floating around when teams compete three times and the winner gets 1.67 points, creating a possibility of a team winning all three meetings and being awarded an extra .01 point.

In any event, IF women's golf is included, the news today out of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic (in Arizona) is not good for Davis. Final results are CSUS, 1st of 20 teams, 885 strokes - UCD 12th of 20, 921.

My 'your guess is as good as mine' tally is UCD 42.51, CSUS 17.51. That includes 5 ppoints for the cross country win, 1.67 for a women's golf win and 3.34 to Sac for two women's golf wins.

Next scheduled event is baseball, April 11th, in Davis.
  • Big West Basketball Coaching News
I "googled" the assoc. professor. He is apparently a very prominent plastic surgeon.

(That may mean more in Southern California.)

AND UCLA was still paying Jim Mora in 2021, who was released after the 2017 season.

I can't confirm this, but I heard that at one time USC was paying three head coaches...Kiffin, Sarkisian and Helton. ANd Ogeron had been an interim head coach in there at least once.
