• North Dakota set to leave Big Sky
Another poster on that same the Slack site thread claims that "the BWC is set to add UCSD this spring and the WAC just added Cal Baptist (CBU) who will start their D1 transition with the WAC in 18-19..."
  • North Dakota set to leave Big Sky
As the article suggests, some of UND's moves have been influenced by a tiff between UND and NDSU. As I recall, UND was not happy when NDSU moved to D-1....seems a little silly because UND has been a D-1 hockey power for years.

So with the two North Dakota schools resuming regular play in football, will they re-tool the rivalry trophy? It has been some variation on the nickel, which made sense when the teams were the Bison and the Fighting Indigenous Americans...but in these enlightened times, not so much.

On a similar subject, there is chatter on the relatively quiet Slack State boards wondering why they aren't trying to move to the Big West, like UCD and CP-SLO. http://www.bigskyfans.com/hornets/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2613
  • Causeway Cup
Slack often does better in winter and spring sports....tennis, gymnastics, baseball and softball, track & field.

To take both women's tennis and gymnastics on back to back days is icing on the cake.
  • Causeway Cup
Under the old system, where football, volleyball and basketball were worth 10 points rather than 5, the score would be 62.5-5.

I think this has something to do with the Electoral College.

(I originally had this as 65-5, but the gymnastics points are split. There is a second gymnastics meet on March 3.)
  • Causeway Cup
Davis wins the Causeway Cup and it isn't even February yet. Current score is 42.5-5 with 32.5 points still out there.

(I originally had this as 45-5, but the gymnastics points are split. There is a second gymnastics meet on March 3.)

What happened to the troll from UCSB? I think he called himself.

[Edit: My bad, I forgot to add his name....It may be the name, I cannot imagine why anyone would knowingly hang that on himself. Thanks for the save, Zythe.]

I wish this was a joke. After I posted the bit on the Trump Tenaya I googled Delaware North and found the following about a Trump victory lap fundraiser in Buffalo, where Delaware North is headquartered:
"Jeremy M. Jacobs, chairman of Delaware North...is also listed as a sponsor. Delaware North owns the new Westin Hotel where the fund raiser will be held."

You can't make this stuff up.

Then again, come January 21st it may be renamed the Trump Tenaya.

At some point the thing will settle. What is the prior concessionaire going to do with the names? Open up an Ahwahnee Hotel in Manteca? They are still bidding for concessions on other national park properties, so common sense (Har!) would suggest they need to stay on the good side of the NPS. Why would the NPS ever grant them a concession in the future if they hold out for a gazillion dollars here? While I am rooting for the NPS on this, they aren't without blame in the whole thing, either. Why didn't they put something in past concession contracts about naming rights, copyrights, trademarks, etc.. And to be fair to Delaware North, as much as it hurts me to do so, when they acquired the first concession I believe they paid for a certain amount of this intellectual property and "good will" to the prior concessionaire, (Yosemite Park & Curry Co. ???).

My wife and I are heading up there later this winter. Looking forward to a night and dinner in the Grand Majestic Marigold Budapest Yosemite Hotel." In our hearts it will be The Ahwahnee.

God bless the law. “One attorney in town will starve to death but two of them in the same town can make a pretty good living.”
  • Troy Taylor leaving EWU
Just noticed this was also mentioned yesterday on Assistant Coaches topic. Sorry.

Good luck to Troy. Would have been excited about Taylor or Hawkins at UCD. Glad we got one. Glad the other is out of the Big Sky for awhile.

On the other hand, the school wants something it can copyright. Can't copyright a C, or an A, or even a CA. So much for calling the teams the California Ahwahnees.
  • UC Davis Impact on Washington Coach Chris Petersen
Think Woody Hayes....nobody at The Ohio State University did a thing until he stepped on the field and punched a player running down the sideline.

Or some of the stories about Bobby Knight.

Saban is a first class jerk, Kiffin is right in there. Switched numbers for players during a game, refused to let opponents practice in the Coliseum, played around with air pressure in footballs before the Patriots...
  • UC Davis Impact on Washington Coach Chris Petersen
Apparently 24-7 over Washington is not enough and Saban lets Kiffin go this morning with one game to go in the season.
  • UC Davis Impact on Washington Coach Chris Petersen
    I agree with you 100%.

On another note...hard to pick sides in an argument between Saban and Kiffin. Kind of like the 2016 elections. And what kind of coaching staff argues, or hands out old fashioned a$$-chewings, on the sidelines during a game and then makes light of it. Down the road a lot of these Alabama players will make some money playing on Sundays, but it will be interesting to see where they are when playing football is behind them. Will they work with families and co-workers? Or will they figure winning is the only important thing, and winning by a lot is better than winning by a little, and that good ol' fashioned a$$-chewings are proper conflict resolution?

What's with 'Bama players not shaking hands after the coin toss? They need a little dose of the helmet rule.

I found these in the course of my Saturday morning Googling:

A couple of links to lengthy articles about Coach Peterson’s career and the UCD connection:

A short excerpt from an interview:

In what ways is your coaching influenced by what you learned from Jim Sochor at UC Davis?

PETERSEN: I think you talk to the Davis guys, all the Davis guys that have come out over the years that have been into coaching, and there’s a lot of them, and all-stars with Coach Sochor, Jim Sochor, and Bob Foster, both those guys. Unique place. I know I wouldn’t be into coaching today without question had I not gone there.

Way, way back I recall reading an article where a coach complained that opponents were scouting his team's practices...(Why do I think it was someone across the Causeway doing the complaining???)...I don't recall the details, though something tells me it was by standing in a wooded area or on a hill from where the alleged spies, er, scouts, could view the practice...and the story went on to say that it was a violation of some rule. Can't scout a team's practice but you can if there is an admission charge. Who charges to attend practices?? My assumption was that it's OK to scout something like a Blue & Gold game if admission is charged. That was a LONG time ago, and my memory is not a great resource for much.
