• 2024 Week 7: Cal Poly (2-3) @ UC Davis (5-1) Homecoming + Battle for the Golden Horseshoe
Pajamarino died around 2017 or 2018. The last year they tried merging it with some other event on E Street and I don't think it was ever brought back.
  • Pac-12 set to add Boise, 3 other MW schools
I wonder if Sac State has reached out to the Republic FC about working out some sort of arrangement on sharing their proposed Railyards stadium. Seems like it could be a viable option that would make both teams' plans more realistic.
  • 2024 Week 4: Utah Tech (0-3) @ UC Davis (2-1)
It's been five years now, but I recall there were a lot of things staff said at first about how the band was going to be that didn't end up materializing in practice. I don't think the intent was ever really to change more than they had to, even where campus administrators said otherwise. The beginning of the school year was kind of weird because we weren't really sure what was going to happen, but by the end of my term as manager, it mostly felt the same as before.

I've heard a saying from people around my year that covid did more to kill tradition than the suspension ever could.
  • 2024 Week 4: Utah Tech (0-3) @ UC Davis (2-1)
I was the student manager in 2019 during the suspension, so technically I was the last manager of the "old" band and first one of the "new" band. As far as I'm concerned, the "new" band is substantially the same as the old one, just with new branding. Even the full dress uniforms they have now were planned before the suspension, so they'd be worn now regardless of whether it happened.

The band might be quieter now, but from everything I heard from those who graduated after me, this had to do with losing a lot of collective knowledge from a year and a half of little activity during covid while older students still graduated, plus having some individual student leaders who aren't that into sports.

I haven't heard anything whatsoever about limiting time the students spend together, but when I was part of the student leadership when we were coming back from the suspension, a big focus was on making a clearer separation between "band time" and "non band time." Of course they didn't say this, but the purpose was to limit the school's liability for anything that happened at parties, bondings, etc. that they knew would still end up happening.
  • Evaluating the athletic department
There are several locations throughout the Sacramento region. They're called Buckhorn BBQ + Grill, except for the Winters location.

  • Dan Whelan Selected By The DC Defenders (XFL)
I know people currently in the band who still use that one!
  • UC Davis Health Stadium getting new turf
Pretty sure we did all that as recently as 2018 or 2019. They changed it by last season, but I remember there being a practical reason (I forgot what).
  • MBB: UC Davis (11-7, 4-3) vs. UC Santa Barbara (12-10, 4-5) 6 PM @ Pavillion
People I know who are in it still informally call it the Aggie Band. I don't think that ever really changed once we were the "new" band.
  • Happy Thanksgiving
    Happy Thanksgiving!!
  • Week 12: Sac State @ UC Davis Causeway Classic 2021
While I consider the Band-uh! to be dissolved only on paper, only the 5th year students ever experienced the original event, so I doubt any current member is pushing for its return.
  • Week 12: Sac State @ UC Davis Causeway Classic 2021
It was through at least 2017, but from what I recall, it was mostly just band alumni. They experimented with changing it in either 2018 or 2019, I think by merging it with another, much larger event. However, I'm not sure if it was still considered Pajamarino or they just focused on promoting the other event instead. No idea what they did this year, if anything.
  • New Covid Protocol - Vax or Neg Test required
So many people already got it (and died) in Florida that there is widespread immunity.
  • Week 3: Dixie State at UC Davis
The rebranding they had us do was, first, likely for liability/PR reasons, but also because we were specifically having problems with alumni. Most were/are fine, but there were consistently some that were problematic, and it was a frequent student complaint that alumni would complain to current members about how things changed, were better how they used to be, etc. I prefer the old name, but they were trying to distance themselves from the past to solve actual problems. Since I'm not in the band anymore, I couldn't say if it's the right or wrong move to go as far as to say "established in 2019" (though I think that statement is somewhat disingenuous given that it still didn't feel all that different when I left). However, the band leadership and certain individuals I know in the school administration are genuinely trying to solve problems to make it a better place for the students.
  • Week 3: Dixie State at UC Davis
I was student manager during the whole thing in 2019, so I was very heavily involved in all the decisions that were made through that process. I also know the current manager and incoming manager pretty well.

There were definitely things that needed to go, and while the university definitely went further than they needed to on some things (likely at the advice of their lawyers), the overall changes were for the best given the cultural and structural issues the band had. Many of the positive traditions we had still go on, and at least before covid, the band still felt like the same band in spirit, even if we had a new name and weren't allowed to do certain things here and there.

Prior to the suspension, the band's culture was already rapidly changing and students were very conscious of trying to make it a safe place for everyone. It clearly wasn't perfect and there were some big areas for improvement, but it was getting significantly better with passing each year. Now that so many people in the band have graduated and only the seniors had a full year, they have a lot of room to make new traditions and keep the things they liked from before, with little pressure to keep things the same "because they have always been that way."
  • Week 3: Dixie State at UC Davis
Coach Sochor would make it a point to talk to us and acknowledge us - and the impact we had on spirit.NCagalum
Coach Hawkins and Coach Les constantly thanked the band, both before and after the suspension/reinstatement. Even in the Bee's article about yesterday's game, Hawkins mentioned them.
  • Week 3: Dixie State at UC Davis
With all due respect, I don't think that's a fair characterization of what's happening with the band. I recently graduated and still know a lot of people in it. Because of covid, the freshmen and sophomores have never performed with the band, and the junior class was already pretty small and only had two quarters of band before covid hit. Only the seniors have ever experienced a Picnic Day. It will take some time to rebuild from covid, but they will.

I didn't care for some of the recent changes (though the "new band" thing is more of a rebranding attempt than anything since it's the same music, students, instruments, etc.), but the vast majority of the changes were for the best. It wasn't visible from an outsider's perspective, but there was a lot of dysfunction in the band's officer council that often really hurt the band as a whole. The structural changes specifically addressed those problems.

As for the staff, while the assistant director is originally from the midwest, the director is originally from around here and went to UC Davis and University of the Pacific before temporarily living out there. I've had nothing but positive experiences with both of them, and they genuinely care about the students.
  • 2019 BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE
Or the band in full dress.
  • Officer Killed in Davis
I happened to pass through right where it happened earlier that day. I remember seeing one of the firefighters wiping off one of the firetrucks. Apparently the shooter shot at a firefighter but only hit his boot. It's so weird to think that happened only a few hours later.
