  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

Hopefully, a few more 3's will fall for the Ags in the second half. They were 5-15 in the first half. Stobbart, who is usually a very good 3 point shooter, is struggling mightily this year. At this point, she's 1 for 18 form 3 for the year.
  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

35-34 Ducks at the half. Great defense and patience on offense by the Ags but the Oregon's size is creating problems...6'8 and 6'7 is hard to defend!
  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

Ags playing very well. So totally different from the USF game. You can just see the high effort level. Keep it going Ags!
  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

Whoa...some very interesting news there. Ducks without two starters, but more importantly, Gray possibly back. If she plays, I'm sure it will be limited minutes and she'll probably be very rusty. But she can use these next few games to get ready for the BW season. Very good news!

    Go Ags!!

FIRST ROADTRIP OF THE 2021-2022 SEASON!

Hello Loyal Aggie Family! We are so excited for the next month of basketball here at UC Davis. When you have experienced the level of success at the Mid-Major level that we have, we are constantly looking to challenge ourselves at the highest level.

This week we kick off a month of playing Top 25 teams: Oregon, Stanford, Washington State and Gonzaga!

Last season, we played in a nail biter against the Ducks. Up at halftime, it was a back-n-forth battle until the Ducks squeaked out a 6pt win.
Soooooo..... you better believe our UC Davis Aggies are excited for today's re-match. If you are able to tune into the game, you will note that the Ducks will have a couple of their typical starters out. PG #12 Te-Hina Paopao is still out with injury, and we got word that starting center #1 Nyara Sabally will not suit out either. So expect a shorter rotation from Oregon, as we are crossing our fingers to see #3 Campbell Gray log some minutes for us at the point guard spot.

Hopefully you can follow the action on the Pac-12 network!

    Go Ags!

    Coach Des
  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

Well here comes easily the toughest part of our schedule. At Oregon, followed closely by a home matchup with Wazzu, and, after a cleanser against Stanislaus st, we finish the OOC portion at Stanford and home to Gonzaga. Oregon has beaten the teams they should, and lost to the two ranked teams they've played (#1 S. Carolina by 17, and #23 S. Florida by 9). We'll have to play tough team defense with team rebounding and hope to get hot on offense, to stay close. As BGA said, we were close to them last year, though if I remember correctly, they were short a few important players and were coming off several weeks of no games thanks to the pandemic. They'll be ready for us today.
  • WBB: Aggies (3-2) at #18/16 Oregon (3-2) Wed 12/1 at 3:30 PM PT

The Aggies travel to Eugene to take on the #18/16 ranked Ducks. Not only are the Ducks the toughest opponent the Ags have faced this year but they are the tallest as well with a roster than includes players listed at 6'8, 6'7,6'5, and 6'4. The Aggies battled the Ducks toe-to-toe last year before the Ducks came from behind to barely beat the Ags 63-57.

Live stream on the PAC12 Network at 3;30 pm.
  • WBB Mid-Major Rankings 11/23

The Aggies have steadily dropped in the mid-major poll each week from #9 to
#12 to #18 garnering 209 votes this week. I think it is mostly a testament to the reputation of the program that we haven't fallen completely out of the polls all together considering we have lost to St Marys who received no votes and were blown out by San Francisco by 25 points and the Dons received a big, fat 4 votes. Future Aggie opponents Gonzaga is #4 and LB State received 12 votes.

  • FCS Football Polls Week 9

I can't recall if anyone has brought up the Sagarin ratings (http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm), but counting only FCS schools, it rates UC Davis #18 (127 overall). To Riveraggie's point, Sac State is #16 (124 overall), just ahead of U. of Arizona. Sagarin uses strength of schedule, as well as points, but also how teams have done in more recent games.

I'm having flashbacks to 2019 when we played Berkeley tough, played North Dakota tough (#1 / #1), came home to play Montana (#18?) with Jake Maier at QB... and we came out flat at game time. They dropped almost 40 points on us in 3 quarters and locked up our run game. Ugh.

  • Week 11: Southern Utah Thunderbirds

The 7-2 Thunderbirds are already playoff eligible and coming into Davis with sights set on a Big Sky Championship (they play NAU after the Ags).

We can expect a physical, 4 quarter game. Head Coached by former Aggie RB Demario Warren, he enters his 2nd season coming off a 6-5 campaign in 2016. SUU qualified for the playoffs in 2013 and 2015, losing to Sam Houston State in the First Round both of those seasons.

The Aggies traveled to Cedar City last season in early October and managed to score 3 points....while giving up 24 in what was a quiet rout of attrition.

QB #3 Patrick Tyler (6'-4", 200 lbs.), a native of Compton, CA, is a cool customer and is on the National Watchlist for CFPA National Performer of the Year. So far this season Tyler has gone 117/277 (64%) with 17 TDs and 9 INTs. His efficiency rating is 140.2, and he has spread the ball effectively as 5 different Thunderbird receivers have over 200 yards this season. Tyler is also averaging 35 rushing yards a game with 3 scores so far this season. Top targets for Tyler include #18 WR Landen Measom a FRESHMAN from South Jordan and #19 TE Logan Parker a junior also from South Jordan.

    Patrick+Tyler+Southern+Utah+v+BYU+udLdK_Qu40ml.jpg

Rushing the football has given SUU tremendous balance as they have 1860 rushing yards so far this season, coming from 4 sources, spearheaded by #23 James Felila (6'-0", 200 lbs., Kearns, UT) with 743 yards on 174 carries (4 yd avg.). #21 Jay Green (a sophomore from Modesto) and #23 Terrance Beasley (a freshman from Inglewood) have also been explosive averaging 5.0 and 7.8 yds per carry on the season, respectively.

New life abounds for the surging Aggies (5-4) now after they dropped 59 points on an Idaho State team that beat Nevada earlier in the year. It will be a tough test at home, where the Aggies have managed to find a way to lose to good teams in recent times (See vs. EWU 2017, vs. Weber State 2016, vs. Montana 2015, vs. South Dakota 2015).

    12950102.jpeg

I hope Hawk and Co. have the Aggies on laser sharp focus all week after a big road win, because this SUU team has the ability to beat us by 40. Whatever razz dazz, new wrinkles we can come up with should come out now...if Davis can grind out a home victory against these very tough Thunderbirds they will have a chance...a CHANCE...at hitting the Playoff scene going into Sac (who trounced SUU earlier this season in Sacramento).

  • Week 4: UC Davis @ Weber State

Week 4 of the season and the Aggies travel to Ogden, Utah to take on the Wildcats of Weber State. In the latest coaches poll to come out WSU is ranked #18 whereas they are ranked #23 in the STATS poll. The Wildcats come into this contest with a 2-1 record, blowing out NAIA Montana Western (1-3) 76-0, losing to Cal (3-0) 20-33, and narrowly escaped Sac State (1-2) 31-24. Outside of SDSU, WSU will be the Aggies biggest task so far this season. Here are some of the Wildcats that we should be keeping an eye out for.

RB Treshawn Garrett (Jr) - Weber State's main running back, although they have a handful of guys that can do damage. Hasn't had any huge gainers on the season so far (long of 12 yards), but he is consistently solid (averaging 5.2 yards per carry).

QB Stefan Cantwell (Sr) - The main part of the Wildcat's offense. He'll get it done through the air and on the ground. He has passed for just over 700 yards on the season and he is leading the team in rushing attempts as well. Similarly to facing PSU and Eason, we are going to have to contain him the only issue being that he is a much better passer than Eason.

WR Rashid Shaheed (RFr) - Big play wide receiver. He only has 6 receptions on the season, but leads the team in receiving yards with 163. Defense is going to have to keep their eyes on him because if you miss coverage he will make you pay.

TE Andrew Vollert (Sr) - Watching the WSU vs Sac game, the commentators were saying that Vollert looks like an NFL tight end. He's big and athletic and is the go to guy for Cantwell. Leads the team in receptions by a good margin and is just barely 2nd in reception yards.

DT McKay Murphy (Sr) - Already looking like one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the Big Sky this season. 3 games into the season and he has 6 tackles for losses and a sack on top. Our offensive line for the most part did a good job of handling PSU's Davond Dade, but they are going to have another tough week against Murphy.

CB Keilan Benjamin (Jr) - The junior CB leads the team in tackles and has an interception, forced fumble, and sack in his stats sheet. If Murphy is getting consistent pressure on Maier we're going to have to make sure to not force the ball in Benjamin's direction.

    GO AGS!!!

Also latest coaches poll leaves UC Davis in the dust with 0 votes, but the STATS poll has us with 12 votes now.

  • WBB: Aggies @ #11 Stanford

The 5-1 Lady Ags face their first acid test of year when they travel to Maples Pavilion to play the #11 Standford Cardinal at 2 pm Sunday (info tidbit: the name Cardinal refers to the bright color of red and not the songbird). Stanford comes into the game 7-1 overall having suffering only a 5 point loss to Gonzaga.

The Cardinal roster lists five players 6'3 and taller so they will have a dominate height advantage and the Ags have struggled with rebounding this year. Stanford is out rebounding their opponents by an average of 12 boards per game. It will be imperative that the Aggies block out and play aggressively on the boards to at least limit Stanford's 2nd chance points.

Athletic 6'3 forward Erica McCall leads The Cardinal with 17.3 ppg while also leading the team in rebounds and blocks as well. She is followed closely in scoring by a pair of guards, Brittany McPhee and Karlie Samuelson, scoring 15.0 and 11.6 ppg respectively. As a team Stanford is beating their opponents by an average margin of 22 ppg 77-55.

The Aggies have never beaten a Top 25 team since joining D1:

UC Davis vs. the Top 25 (Division I results only)
    Dec. 2, 2007 - at #6 Stanford (L, 62-41)
    Dec. 9, 2007 - at #18 Arizona State (L, 77-56)
    Dec. 3, 2008 - vs. #25 Arizona State (L, 73-59)
    Dec. 17, 2008 - at #22 South Dakota State (L, 59-47)
    Dec. 28, 2008 - at #11 Stanford (L, 84-49)
    Nov. 22, 2009 - vs. #2 Stanford (L, 76-51)
    March 19, 2010 - at #2 Stanford (L, 86-59... NCAA First Round)
    Nov. 21, 2010 - at #15 UCLA (L, 65-49)
    Nov. 30, 2011 - at #5 Stanford (L, 93-44)
    Nov. 30, 2012 - vs. #1 Stanford (L, 87-37)
    Nov. 17, 2013 - at #2 Stanford (L, 66-48)
    Dec. 5, 2013 - at #1 UConn (L, 97-37)
    Nov. 14, 2014 - vs. #1 UConn (L, 102-43)
    Nov. 13, 2015 - vs. #16 Stanford (L, 74-43)

It would certainly be a huge upset if the Ags were to upend The Cardinal but anything is possible. The Aggies have the ability to play very well when they get into a good flow and are playing within themselves. They are a very unselfish team with great team chemistry and, if they get hot and their confidence gets a boost, they might make things interesting.
