  • Ags opt out of men's 2020-2021 delayed water polo season.
This makes complete sense. There's almost as much too-close contact in water polo as there is in football, and you really wouldn't be able to effectively wear a mask with all the swimming. And what are you going to do- not be breathing heavily after you've been aggressively swimming around and you've just gotten your head pushed underwater ?

Water polo probably won't be the last sport to have its season cancelled. Isn't outdoor track and field either a spring sport or a fall sport that would have been played this spring? To comply with COVID measures they'd have to do something about either the types of events or the number of participants allowed in each one. Perhaps only competitions against single opponents instead of big meets ? It's one thing to hold a shotput or javelin competition, but quite another to have all those runners huffing and puffing right next to each other for minutes at a time.
  • The 2021 baseball schedule...
I have confirmed via their website that Logan Denholm is playing for Sac State now. This was only made possible by COVID-19.
  • Montana, Montana State opt out of spring FCS championship season
from the same twitter thread PSU opted out too. Portland State should really just cancel football. Skill or not, if no one comes out to watch, what's the point ? They could get a better crowd for a youth soccer game if you advertised that there would be pickle flavored donuts for sale. PSU could maybe get a boost if they put a bird on it.
  • The 2021 baseball schedule...
It's a pain to edit stuff on my mobile device so I'm having to reply to myself like some kind of narcissist.

Would definitely like to see the WCC broken up. All those schools have in common is that they are super-expensive private institutions with church affiliations, and not even the same church. If their aim is to only play like-minded schools then why don't they include Seattle U ? Surely the Redhawks would rather play Gonzaga and other West Coast schools instead of teams from Utah and Texas ? And if religion is at all a factor, then why do they deign to play all of the "unenlightened" public schools ? I think religion is not a factor but money definitely is. I think if God were to look at their tuitions even he would declare them ungodly.
  • COVID-19
I was reading on the Texaa Longhorns website that they've been allowing fans at the bball games, but only season ticketholders from the previous year who opted in. Of course they also have assigned seats and gates and only mobile tickets, among other precautions. That might be similar towhat UCD will do with the spring football.

Someone on here-I forget who it was-made a good point on what flattening the curve really means. In the short term you prevent deaths, but in the long term you compensate for the lives you saved through other ways. For example, suicides are up because many can't deal with the isolation or losing their jobs. Meanwhile people are losing their homes because they lost their jobs and are being forced onto the streets, where they don't have a good chance of survival and are more likely to get COVID-19.. And don't get me started on how California creates a never-ending cycle of homelessness all the while it is preaching that more needs to be done to help the homeless.

These safety precautions (business shutdowns, cancellations of events) are transparently aimed at preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed, and that's it. The virus is going to do its thing and keep killing thousands of people until enough people are vaccinated, and then it will be mostly people dying of the complications. You can make small gains through staying at home but that is a very minimal outcome. I hate to invoke Darwinian principles here but viruses are a reminder that there are too many people and that nature is thinning out the herd through survival of the fittest.

Well,my employer has started offering weekly testing on-site and I'll do it. It's a win-win. If I am negative I get peace of mind. If positive it could force their hand and send me home to work, which is what I've been asking for.
  • Big West Conference Announces Move of 2021 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships to Las Vegas
If everyone gets in and everyone plays a different number of regular season games why even play the rest of the schedule ? You can seed everyone randomly. In fact, why does it have to be basketball? If it's the Mandalay Bay why not a boxing tournament? One player from each team. That way CSUN WBB can participate.
  • Fans at baseball games this season ?
Absolutely. People continue to spread this through the gatherings. I haven't seen my family since July, and I was only able to do that because I was on vacation and had been self-quarantined at home for two weeks as a precaution after I visited El Paso, which at the time was doing much better than other large Texas cities.

You're completely right about the restaurants. There are very few items you can order that are close to as good as take-out and fewer still that survive delivery in good shape, which suggests they weren't really that good in the first place. In my experience so far only pizza and Popeye's chicken consistently are of at least halfway decent quality, and the pizza delivery model has been around for decades. Domino's made their money on it. The pizza's not great, but you don't care as much because it's cheap and convenient.

And dine-in hamburgers are a trap. Burgers are supposed to be simple and cheap-it's why they're popular. Up-selling the product with ad-ons and "better quality ingriedients" and "farm to table" is targeted at suckers. Gross are their burgers look Sonic has the cheap crap model down.

I make a point of not ordering delivery from any restaurant using a third-party service. The drivers don't make you any kind of priority and they really don't care if you don't like their service since you've already paid them.

I'm guessing from your description of the state police situation that you're in MD ?

That's really tough about the impact on your business. I got the impression that you're in either the construction or engineering fields from previous posts ? You definitely do need people to gather for that. I can understand even not wearing a mask when doing hard physical labor if the company has adequate safety measures in place.

I believe the governors have really missed the boat when it comes to what businesses to shut down during the pandemic. During previous shutdowns they have closed barber shops and salons. Hair can be a definite hygiene issue, not to mention the importance of appearance in business. What are your potential investors in Hong Kong going to think of your business if you join a video call with a choppy home hairxut or looking like Shaggy from Scooby Doo ? Bars that do not serve to-go meals- sure, shut them down.

And they can't even get an accurate reading on what else is essential. They may think a leisure book store isn't essential but stores offering items that help keep people distracted from being stuck at home alone may just be preventing impetuous suicides.

It is astonishing to still see how ignorant people are about COVID. I was in Safeway last night and when waiting on the designated and marked spot for my chance to approach the checkstand a bunch of people walk within less than a foot of me to get in line instead of going around. Said nothing to most as the close contact was very brief. Then this family, complete with an infant in a stroller, stand right behind me. The man appeared to be a blue collar worker from his uniform so there's a good chance he is working away from home and encountering others regularly.

I asked him politely if he could back up so we could practice social distancing and he got really defensive. The lamest excuses too. One, that other people in line weren't doing it. Two, the fact I was wearing a mask meant I wouldn't get it. Eventually they did back up. I tell you though his wife looked like she was completely oblivious, like maybe she'd been locked in the house and forbidden any connection to the outside world, even TV. They were wearing masks (except the infant) but he took his off because apparently talking with one on is just too inconvenient. The biggest question is- why was he not concerned that the infant was less than a foot from a person who, from their appearance, might also work outside the home around others ? And you know how it is at Safeway. You could be standing in line for 20 minutes because the dimwit in front of you is asking a bunch of questions about Monopoly or or the organic crap they're buying. No such thing as a quick trip to Safeway.

I meant that Newsom has been tougher on Sacramento and Yolo counties than he needed to be for appearances. If his backyard was a mess he'd look even more incompetent. Sacramento has barely been out of the purple category since before there even was any color coding, and my co-worker, who is antsy to get back in the gym, regularly points out to me counties with problems that were as bad or worse that weren't so tightly controlled. And much like many an Aggie baseball infielder of the past (other than Tanner Murray) he dropped the ball- not clamping down on the L.A. morons in time to prevent a dumpster fire.
  • Bee article on Les
I don't really think UCD has much appetite for pulling out the stops to push through athletics right now, with pretty much no financial incentive to do so. I say pretty much because there's still the hope that if you get the season in that student athletes who would be normally finishing up their eligibility will be satisfied and not stick around taking up scholarship money for another year. However, that's really a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs to hold the events.

I suspect right now administrators are feigning disappointment every time they cancel an event. No basketball Friday ? Oh no, we were so looking forward to hosting that game with no spectators so that posters on aggiesportstalk.com can watch it online and make critiques ! This such a shame *rolling eyes*.!
  • Physical Education eliminated
I thought it was a greater percentage that came from student fees. I suppose that whether or not it is a violation really depends on what the written explanation of the fees actually is. The University of California no doubt has to have it in print (and accessible to the public) an itemized accounting of what specifically the student fees are used to fund, as well as supporting documentation supporting the allocations, not just a vague summary on websites. In other words they're accountable to the taxpayers. If their justification for any parts of the fee involves funding programs for the physical well-being of students then there is a big problem here.

We all like our favorite sports teams, but if keeping them afloat has to come through the students getting the shaft I'd just as soon have all sports canceelled at UCD.

Exercise walking aside, the merit of these courses is teaching students to be safe. That was the main benefit of the weight-lifting courses-I recall Moroski didn't really lecture- but he did but he did spend the majority of the class walking around making sure everyone was being safe. Weightlifting at the ARC should require enrollment in a free course.
  • SUU to WAC
initially it probably does nothing. Long term I wonder if Southern Utah has ntentions of cutting football. That of course is just speculation without any factual evidence. Not having been there myself I don't know how heavily invested the university is in its program.

I could see Sac State dropping their team though.
They almost did in the early 90's but the students voted to tax themselves to keep it going. I doubt they'd be willing to do so again. UCD and Cal Poly seem to be very heavily invested in theirs .
  • Physical Education eliminated
Looking ahead I'm thinking this may be the first step toward sports actually being cut. I thought we were looking at maybe 1 women's and 1 or 2 men's programs; however, it could go deeper than that-especially if other conference schools also do so. I was focused on baseball and field hockey, but we could start seeing some unexpected ones.

My thinking is that, in the "real world" when your employer starts taking resposibilities away from you without giving you any replacements it is often a sign of upcoming pay cuts and/or layoffs.

Great story ! Glad to hear it's nicer inside the gym.
  • Physical Education eliminated
I think an exercise walking class's merit would really be in getting otherwise lazy first year students to start working off the freshman 15 they got from the DC. Mainly getting you started so you think about more aggressive exercise. That's not without its place I suppose. Students can get lazy if they live on campus and bike to class. What health benefit are you really getting out of a five minute bike ride ?

Wasn't Zalesky the wrestling coach ?
  • MBB: William Jessup at UC Davis, Friday, Dec. 4, 4:00 PST
LOL You can just go ahead and say Sac State. Nobody would disagree, although I will say Hornet Gym is just about the right size for the crowds they get. If they went ahead with that 3200-seat arena they tried to get funding for they would just have 2000 empty seats on the best nights. They should ptobably just count on no fans this season. You could limit attendance to 20%, but those 240 people would scarcely have anywhere to get away from each other. But what do you if you're Sac State-build an 1,800 seat gym ? What's the point ? The fans just aren't there for that.

I remember a funny and pathetic moment from the Hornet Gym though. There was a women's game where the scoreboard went out, so they brought in a portable one, which also failed. The rest of the half was played with someone using a timer. The announcer really didn't know the players w/o the scoreboard showing the #'s so they just didn't call anything. At the half spectators didn't know what the score was. The end result was another loss for the hornets, who were 0-29 that season. They would've been 0-30, but the 20+ point drubbing by Holy Names in the first game was an exhibition. That coach was terrible, but somehow she landed a WNBA gig after they let her go.

I can't think of any other ones in the area that are of poor quality, except maybe USF. I say maybe USF because I only saw the outside of the bball gym when I was there. Its exterior was in keeping with the dull, decaying 1950's community college motif they seem to be going for. The big church is nice-looking though.

I took a weightlifting class with Mike Moroski. I didn't even know he was a football assistant. He made no mention of it or his NFL career. I remember it being a very hands-off experience. He would sometimes talk briefly at the beginning of class, but we were mostly left to our own exercises.

But they had a walking class back then. Thought that sounded like a waste. It would be one thing if it were a class for people rehabilitating from serious injury, but you'd usually see a physical therapist for that. Just walking for exercise, no. Walk around the campus or to class from your apartment.
  • WBB: USF (0-0) @ Aggies (0-0) Nov 25, 2020 3pm
Who had the positive test for Simpson ? My guess would be Lisa. Marge and Maggie have largely been adhering to stay at home orders for the duration of the show.
  • New rules college baseball should have
The final things I wanted to add:

MLB players mostly do not have classes to contend with, so they can play as late as they want.

College teams do not have the ability to go the minor leagues to get replacement players when they have players who are exhausted or injured. It is for that reason that the existing students' well-being needs to be better addressed with any rule changes.

The last rule change I would make involves games where weather or darkness forces the stoppage of play.for more than 30 minutes. If it is already an official game (5 ifull nnings have been played or 4 1/2 with the home team leading)and it is not tied then the game is over. No continuation the next day.
  • Spring Schedule
At least you can get a good look at UC Davis Health Stadium walking around. Not true at this place I visited over the weekend. It's so obscured it reminds me of those final dungeons in video games that you can see but can't enter until you have a flying ship or a Pegasus or some crap like that. As far as getting to watch a game in person as an everyman you might have to find a Pegasus.

The idea that no fans can attend these things is crap. If you have the right connections or have a compelling enough story you can get in. I remember seeing on ESPN during the regular season some MLB team let in a terminally ill fan and he wasn't even stashed in a discreet suite somewhere- right out in the open. So they were willing to risk him dying of COVID-19 quickly instead of whatever timetable he was on. So make new friends with connections.
