  • MBB: Aggies (3-3) @ Nevada (6-0) 6 pm Wednesday 12/06
Just a personal note: When I was as student and UC Davis was in the Far Western Conference, I was able to go to every away game one season, because I was part of the KDVS broadcast, but I missed the Nevada game, so this was the first time I saw their home arena, which is a far cry from what they must have been playing in back in those days.

I agree with you. I wrote that the officiating was "imbalanced" which is a polite way of saying "biased." While I don't think referees are intentionally favoring one team, I'e seen many who are overly influenced by the home crowd and I think that was clearly the case yesterday.

The game was rough and chippy, but the commentators seemed just as mystified by the technicals as anyone, so there was never an explanation for them and the Aggies who got called for it did not seem to have done anything obvious. They might have been critical of the refs, but who knows?

Well I got two out of the three things I wanted to see from the Ags: Another scorer in Milling who had 16 with 5 treys and better free throw shooting (by a little bit), but the turnovers were egregious. 19! many of them unforced as Nevada only had 5 steals. Between that and the imbalance in officiating (Ags outscored Nevada from the floor 58-50) cost us what would have been a nice upset.

I'm glad but surprised that UCD has been hanging with Nevada, but mark the 10 minute point of the second half. If the Ags lose it will be because of a swing in momentum at this point.

Oddly enough the Ags lead in rebounds 21-17. Rocak has almost as many blocks as the whole Nevada team.

Very ragged game. Both teams played very aggressive defense in the first half, but the Wolfpack was pretty cold anyway. They rallied near the end with four made baskets in a row to pull ahead. Both teams shot under 40%. At lot of mysterious calls from the officials who either were not communicating to the broadcasters or the broadcasters weren't cluing in. Overall, not impressed with the refs. made some ticky-tack calls and missed some obvious ones. TY got two technicals?! Why?

Are you using the site I posted? For some reason, it's not streaming for me.

I found this site for the game on Mountain West Network: https://themw.com/watch/?sport=13 . I haven't used it before so if anyone has a tried and true site, I defer to them. I am not looking for a win here. Nevada is too good, probably the best team we'll face in the preseason. To recast what BlueGoldAg has written, I hope to see Milling and/or DeBruhl to score more reliably, fewer turnovers and better free throw shooting. Those will be the keys to progress going forward.
  • 2023-24 FCS Playoffs
What I've never liked about college sports polls is how they rank teams in the preseason based on a combination of reputation, their previous season and additions/losses. All before a single game has been played. Then it is hard for teams to move into or up within the polls once play begins culminating in (for both FCA and NCAA basketball) committees using those polls to determine who gets into the playoffs. I like the suggestion some sportswriters have made to NOT have preseason polls, but poll them after two or three games have been played. By the way, I note that as I write this, Sac State is trailing South Dakota State at the half 24-14.
  • Tim Plough Named New UC Davis Head Football Coach
What I like about this is the way the program has not only some built in continuity, but yet another former Aggie football player who understands the culture of the campus and can "sell" it to recruits. What is kind of typical about it is to replace a defensive minded HC with an offensive minded HC. Seems like a common pattern at both the college and pro levels.
  • 2023-24 Big West MBB Scores Thread
I watched the Hawai`i game against Utah and Hawai`i was simply overwhelmed by the Utes size (they have the tallest team in the country with the starters averaging over 6'7"), especially their two 7'1" post men. Hawai`i had a fighting chance but went cold from the 3-point arc. Undefeated up to last night, Hawai`i will be a tough team to beat for any school in the Big West.

I'm not as pessimistic as fellow Aggie. Even if the scores do't indicate it, the Ags have been in every game in the sense that we could have, should have won, with better free throw shooting and fewer turnovers in other words better focus. We all agreed that we needed more balanced scoring and I note that Milling and DeBruhl hit in double figures yesterday. Pepper and Johnson won't both be that cold very often in the future.

If I were superstitious I would say that my not watching the game in the second half jinxed the Aggies, since they got outscored by 19. But I'm not superstitious, just incredulous that they could play so poorly in the latter 20 minutes. It's not like OSU played especially well, except for their big man, Chol Marial, who seemed to be everywhere, and #4, Dexter Akanno, who did a nice job defending Pepper. That dry spell hurt the most. Not only did they go 9:30 without a basket, but 6:54 without any score. Sad.

Ags also outrebounded the Beavers in the first half.

I was watching an earlier broadcast of the Hawai`i-Utah game with color commentary by Mike Montgomery, who mentioned what a good coach Jim Les is.

Odd that Pepper hasn't scored through most of the first half. He's 0 for 3.

The game starts out here at 5:30 which cuts through my dinner time, so I'll only watch the first half in real time, but see the end well after it's over.

Hard to tell how good Oregon State is at 3-3 with all their victories were against low level schools (although they barely beat a weak Troy team by 1 point in Corvallis) and they lost badly to very good teams with a combined record of 19-2. I think the Ags have more than a fighting chance, though.
