  • The Search for a New Chancellor
Next regents meeting march 16. Obviously JN is in no rush, but 8 months without a chancellor? Wow! Still think Hexter is a lock for the position and may be why JN is in no rush. He is a steady hand on the wheel. He handled the speaker protest very well.

A strong best effort on defense could make the difference againstUCI

2 three stars? Have we ever had 2 three stars before? Maybe 1 Denham and he was a total bust; but never 2. Who are these guys?
  • WBB: UC Riverside (10-8 & 4-1) @ the Aggies (13-6 & 4-2)
Offensive boards are alittle hard to deal with. If you are inside your player with back to the basket as you should be and the opposition throws up a bad shot (as did the highlanders tonight a lot lof times) then you are not going to get that rebound because its going over your head. That said, need to get better. l loved to see how Kourtney managed the team and she's only a sophomore. Gianotti is a beast!!
  • The Search for a New Chancellor
Did not happen! Why, if there were 3 finalists, didn't the regents make the appointment?
Maybe some issues we don't know about. Then, if Hexter is doing a good job, why rush it?
  • MBB: Aggies (11-8 & 3-1) @ Hawai'i (8-9 & 2-2)
Hate to quote the new micheal Lewis book again (the undoing project) but he states that the new "algorithm" for NBA bigs is not height but effective length. Looks like chima fits that mold. Also, I love Morgan, but she needs some meat on those bones. Maybe chima and Morgan do some workouts together and then a big lunch! They are such great kids!

Next regents meeting is this Thursday. IMHO announcement of new chancellor will be made at this meeting. It looks like Ralph Hexter will be our next chancellor- but there could be a surprise. I hope JN is there to make the announcement and I hope she makes a swift recovery.
  • The Search for a New Chancellor
Movie. According to the davis enterprise today Hexter is way ahead heading into the back stretch,
  • Bob Hamilton
Wow toke69! You were in my class! Great to have you. I have family on the islands too.
  • Cal Fires Dykes
ROYA I mostly agree with you, but the point of my post was to compare the issues that we have with our program with those at cal; i.e. The need for lights at dobbins or covered batting cages vrs. How to deal with what is one of the largest deficits in college athletics at cal. In other words we are blessed with the smallness of our problems. Lastly I don't think there is any "hatred" towards cal (my proud cal grad wife would not approve!) just a mixture of envy and competitive spirit. Everyone is aware that cal lifts the entire UC system.
  • WBB: Long Beach State (10-6, 2-0) @ the Aggies (11-4, 2-0)
Well watching the ladies game and seeing multiply layups miss and the same with threes that have not happened much this year. I think we all simply saw an example of "regression to the mean" in a sports contest. At the end of the first half after seeing the 6th or 7th missed shot from with in the paint I just knew this game could not be won by the Aggies. No coaching and no new strategy would have made any difference at all. You can only fix this by fixing the mean and that would be better players on our team or, to be fair, more mature an d experienced players which we will have as the season progresses and next year. You might like to read Michael Lewis' (Moneyball, etc.) fascinating new book: The Undoing Project. Two Israeli psychologists delve into how humans make decisions: i.e. "don't ever trust your gut instinct" and why Israeli fighter pilots and army are so good. His best book ever IMHO.

Where is Teresa Gould now? I thought she was great. Hope she lands in a good place. Anyone know where?
  • Cal Fires Dykes
Yes, bad time to tick off alums. They will be needed to try and save some of their revered sports teams due to budget deficits. NY times article says just the stadium deficit (400M!) could be the death knell for some teams. Plus, 120M in ongoing operating budget deficit. Wow! Think we have problems? Not like this. . .

    Z. One question: why would we do this? See possible new Davis recruiting Flyer: "Dear UC Davis freshman: sorry, but if you thought you were going to a university at the best college town in the nation, forget that. Now classes will begin in downtown Sactown, home to druggies, prostitution, needle exchanges, and drunks ion the K street mall. Z do you have a conflict on interest on this issue: what is the benefit to UC Davis on this. Have y ou any experience on the mean streets of sactown?

Sorry to follow my own post, but I cannot stand by for the hypocritical and self serving statements by the bee's editorial just posted minutes ago. After almost 6 years of extremely negative coverage by the bee regarding UC Davis (remember "pepper spray") and virtually zero coverage of the many positive accomplishments at UC Davis for years, and then, of course, the undoing of Ketahi in large part due to the bee. Today we have the bee saying that katehi may have "made some dumb decisions" BUT had some great ideas: move UC Davis to sac. Build a downtown classroom building! We need smart young undergrads to help lift up sacramento and improve the economy! Sac needs HELP! And the new mayor steinberg enthusiastically signs on for this. This is so stupid, can you imagine recruiting bright new freshmen to the Davis campus and then telling them "well, you will have to go to sac for poly sci 1- no parking and don't walk K street after dark"? Absolutely crazy that napalitano actually says she wants the new Chancellor to focus on sac. I don't think the faculty will ever, ever sign on to this incredibly stupid and dumb idea.
  • Sacramento Campus
I hope that this is just napalitano telling the bee board what it wants to hear. The bee is absolutely ga ga about the thought of UC Davis undergrads going to classs in sac and napalitano could see this clearly. Also, napalitano apparently has bought into the old idea (fantasy) the regents have had for decades that a major role of any davis chancellor should be political, i.e be the regents point guard with the state legislature. This has never worked and n ever will. Academics are just not good with politicians. Yes, the bee wants a davis chancellor thats best for sacramento. We want a chancellor thats b est for UC Davis.
  • WBB: Aggies (9-4) @ UC Irvine (2-12)
B, I totally agree. But the fact is the Lady Ags are a bad rebounding team and you simp[ly cannot win a lot in the BW w/o rebounding skills. It seems that skill is 50% ability 50% mental toughness. I think we lack the latter. My idea: have Coach Speckman speak to the team. See if that won't motivate them!
  • Sacramento Campus
Although most of the faculty supported katehi thru the chaos of last year, her decision to create a "Third Campus" ("World Food Center") in the Sacramento rail yards was in no way supported by the faculty and was a very bad idea for many reasons. First, it was a sign that katehi would fold under the immense and relentless pressure of the Sac Bee (who actually seriously wanted under graduate classes in sacramento) and the Rail yard developers to do their bidding when there was no benefit whatsoever to the Davis Campus and would only put money in their pockets. Second, it was a sign that katehi was "out of control" and doing something without any consideration of what the campus actually needed as opposed to what sacramento people wanted. It will be up to the new chancellor as to what happens to the "World Food Center" but my guess is that this is is a dead concept insofar as sacramento is concerned. UC Davis is UC Davis, not UC Sacramento which Sacramento and the BEE would delay love to have.
  • Two Font Logo
Yes, and the current horse/horseshoe logo on a baseball cap looks ludicrous and hardly even fits on the front of our caps. Shame on whoever came up with this idea. CA forever! Keep it simple!
  • The Search for a New Chancellor
I think we know who it will be and it wont be a he. Just think of the most respected and liked woman UC Davis faculty member and you will know who the next chancellor will be.
