  • Gilliam Named Preseason Big Sky Offensive MVP also Gilliam, Pettek & Parks on 1st Team

But I think we get beat in the trenches against the good teams.
I would agree with you. Line of scrimmage is often the key - especially against better opponents.

Somewhat interesting discussion about implications of FBS realignment on FBS. Guys from NAU EWU and Idaho along with Sam Herder. At about minute 33:00 discussion of UCD. The Idaho guy provides a vicarious dig (from UCD perspective) at Sac State and both Idaho and EWU guys are very complimentary of UC Davis and it’s position. I kind of said “what?” to myself when the campus was deemed “one of the most beautiful I have ever seen” - but I guess when I was on campus I was worried more about surviving than campus aesthetics. Anyway an outside perspective and a bunch of hypotheticals if you are bored and waiting for the first kickoff in a couple months.

Exactly what the commissioner of the West Coast Conference said on Finebaums podcast. Travel could become crazy say In basketball/baseball. And if say (North)Carolina moves out of the ACC in football rivalries like Duke-Carolina could still exist in basketball if the other sports stayed in current conferences.

[The shared resource is the tradition and history of the sport. All these team realignments erode the traditions that contribute to making college football interesting to fans./quote]

Listening to a sportswriter on a Paul Finebaum show said “whenever you look to gain something (in this case the financial aspect) you always give up something” and it was pretty much exactly what you are saying.

I'm not up to date on the NIL implications, but I read and posted in the OT section the Long Beach Poly 6'6" QB worth $8 Million right now? WTH? Please explain that one. Jersey sales?

As I think I mentioned earlier, I am sure there are some very imaginative minds conniving ways to launder money. Alums and boosters provide the dough, an impresario sets up the shell (phony commercial demand) and viola. Gotta think there are going to have to be a lot more ncaa accountants/police to check on outlandish payments for say promoting a local car dealership.

oh, man. Am planning on going to that game. Not sure I prefer a night game. Might have to bundle up a bit and an 8:15 local time kick off is getting close to my bedtime.

Well I guess 60 provided more resolution with UCD. Block CA also used pre-game ‘78

NCagalum We don’t have room for all that text.
All tongue in check of course. We (band-uh) used to do a block UCD back in the day. You could do that with 48 marching.

Maybe should inscribe THE University of California Davis on the field ala THE Ohio State University

Don’t know if the above link will work for y’all without a subscription but Jason Gay is very funny/entertaining.
  • California Tour Set for Hawkins and Others
NIL collectives seem to me as just a pay to play contract funded by alums and boosters. Seems to me that there may not be a real “market” for many recruits (e.g., name or image on a legitimate product as advertising for that product to boost sales) but simply the value a player might bring towards the goal of a national championship or league championship - which the alums and boosters will gladly fund. Seems to me NIL will tempt many forms of money laundering and schemes (see Luckin coffee of China for example).

Only good thing I have seen about it so far is the entertaining feud between Sabin and Jimbo Fisher. The Fisher video is a must see.

  • UCLA and Notre Dame to play FCS opponents.
Those games are going to be routes. Don’t really j is that it will be good for anyone except for a paycheck for the HBCUs. Heck if ND and UCLA go that route, schedule Florida A&M or another HBCU with a top notch marching band and a alumni draw.
  • Contingency plan for smoke?
My one and only attended NFL game was at Kezar when I was a kid. Zeke Bratkowski was filling in for an injured Bart Starr. Maybe 1964. Don’t even remember who won the game. We were on the giant end zone. I do remember a bunch of seat cushions being thrown down to the field after the game. Must have been rentals.

And yes, have seen the Dirty Harry movie with the scene in Kezar with fog. Classic.
  • Paul Shelton heads back to Tennessee, HS HC
hah, we have friends who live about a half mile from there (South Doyle) We lived in Knoxville when I was in grad school and it is a very nice “town”. Bought a 50 year old house with cash on the barrel head (wife sold condo in CA) for about 82k but mind you in 1990. Yes no income tax but sales tax was 10% then. Nothing like going to a football game there. Saw UOP (yes), UCLA, Notre Dame, and Alabama among others. I opened my PhD defense with (imagine chopping motion) what is this in Atlanta (go braves)….in Tallahassee (go Noles), in Knoxville (first and 10 Alabama). Fortunately committee members laughed.
  • Campbell shocks college recruiting
Campbell is kind of out in the boom docks. They had football many years ago then dropped it. I have been on campus once for a wind ensemble concert I am in (Aggie band-uh alum). The buildings are all very new and quite nice. They have started a law school and a PA school. It is private and nominally Baptist (of some sort). Evidently they have some big donors and big ambitions. I pretty sure academic qualifications are very secondary for athletics (especially football). From what I have watched, they have some flash from some individuals but as a team were only 2-5 in Big South conference, not one of the stronger ones. I see them maybe having a flash in the pan year at some point but nothing sustainable.

Totally agree. He started here at NC State for a while and when replaced went to the portal, so this is his second abdication. Seems like a guy who when meeting any resistance chooses to abandon ship.
