  • Week 12: UC Davis (6-4) at Sac State (10-0)
About 2004, the transition was in effect, Davis was strong in '04 and '05 (beat Stanford, challenged strong FCS programs) but they were also inconsistent, such was QB Jon Grant. Aggies own the historical series, but that trend is moving back right now with Sac being so strong.

Taylor is 2-0 vs. Dan Hawkins. TT's Sac teams beat the Davis squad in 2019 and 2021...2020 was the abbreviated COVID spring season year. Sac opted out, and Davis played.

Of note, it was the 2018 Reno Beatdown vs. Sac in the forest fire year that triggered Taylor's hiring I think. Taylor has been Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021...he was named Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 2019, the year after Dan Hawkins had won the same national FCS honor.

Both seasons that Sac had made the playoffs, '19 and '21, they've lost in their first playoff game. 2019 to Austin Peay, and 2021 to South Dakota State (the same SDSU team that beat up on Davis that last post-season). In both seasons, Sac had secured a home game and 1st Round Bye.

To date, I think this 2022 squad is the best that Taylor has put on the field. They will be potent on Saturday, and Davis better strap it up and be ready to play from minute zero.

Anybody want to look at the record? Since what, 2004?

Looks like the Aggies are 11-6 vs. Sac as of 2004.

Sac has only had 4 home games all year, this will be their 5th.

  • Week 11: UC Davis (5-4) @ Idaho (6-3)
For his monster game @ Moscow, Gilliam Jr. is FedEx Ground National Offensive Player of the Week...of course, he's only Big Sky co-Offensive Player of the Week sharing honors with Montana State RB/WR Marqui Johnson who had 4 TDS and over 240 yards rushing @ Cal Poly. To me the more meaningful performance was from Gilliam, but whatever, nice accolade.

The great thing about GA tickets, is you can move around...yes Causeway is packed with annoying Sac fans, yes, folks are drunk - it's the crazy nature of the rivalry, when it's good you just have to revel in it. Now the question is, will the Aggie offense be able to get after Sac? In recent history, the Aggies have trouble moving the ball on Sac, which tells me Taylor takes pride in shutting down the Aggie game plan. What are the 'Wrinkles', where will the execution threshold hit a brick wall that meshes with predictability? One thing I always appreciated about Biggs, he wasn't scared to install some new stuff for the special games. Feels like Gamblin' Dan needs to get the guys ready to throw some curveballs.

I'm watching the highlights from the Cal @ Oregon State game last night, and a 3 win Cal team....looks absolutely terrible in all three phases. Getting pushed around on defense, their offense flat out sucked, and they gave up a punt return TD.

College GameDay confirms...they will be in Bozeman next Saturday for The Brawl of the Wild.

  • Week 11: UC Davis (5-4) @ Idaho (6-3)
To be fair, watching the full replay, Tompkins waived a little bye-bye to a tackler in the end zone, then carried on. Look, he's a high energy dude and the emotions run hot after a score, but take a page out of Giliam's book...just hand it to the ref, act like you've done it before and head to the sideline.

He's losing two senior QB's next season, and a star senior WR. They've been able to recruit well in the transfer portal, however, so the idea of being a power each year is real. Skattebo's only a sophomore so that helps.

This still feels like Taylor's peak season, if he goes deep in the playoffs his Sac HC resume will be sparkling this off-season. The offers, and the money will be there.
  • Tough Hawkins Critique

Absolutely. This is a team game, and Davis has been playing the team game all year, especially in the passing game. The coaching staff has made adjustments this season and put in the work to get these student-athletes prepared.
  • Week 11: UC Davis (5-4) @ Idaho (6-3)
I remember a tough UNI team in 2018 who was 6-5, got in, won a playoff game and fought the Aggies tooth and nail in the second round. They played in a murder conference. We'll see. Davis no doubt wants to go in and break Sac's Big Sky win streak with the perfect game plan, but they certainly need to play Sac to the bone.
